"Appomattox: The Surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia" by Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain is a dramatic look at the climax of the Civil War by an eyewitness.
Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (1828-1914),was a college professor from the state of Maine who volunteered during the American Civil War to join the Union Army. Although he had no earlier education in military strategies, he became a highly respected & decorated Union officer, reaching the rank of brevet Major-General. For his gallantry at Gettysburg, he was awarded the Congressional Medal Of Honor. He was given the honor of commanding the Union troops at the surrender ceremony of General Robert E. Lee's Army at Appomattox. In all, Chamberlain served in 20 battles and numerous skirmishes. Cited for bravery four times, he had six horses shot from under him, and was wounded six times.
Chamberlain's account, "Appomattox: The Surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia" details the final hours of the campaign that forced the surrender of General Robert E. Lee's Army Of Northern Virginia, which effectively ended the American Civil War. Then he goes on to describe the surrender ceremonies----which he was in charge of organizing----and describes the emotions of that historic day.
A short----7,300++ words, but truly amazing eyewitness account of the close of the Civil War from a Union commander & front-line soldier rolled into one.

Marvelous speech by an outstanding man.

Joshua Chamberlain won the Congressional Medal of Honor for his stalwart 1863 defense of the Little Round Top at Gettysburg, and held high command in the Union Army for the remainder of the Civil War. He later became Governor of Maine and eventually President of Bowdoin College. This book is a memorial speech he gave in 1903 recounting his experiences and those of commanders and troops on both sides during the last days of that war, and his participation in the surrender ceremonies, in which he received the surrender of the Confederates and gave them a honorific salute, which caused some anger among Northern populations. He gives recognition and credit to both Union and Confederate leaders for their honor, valor, and sacrifice and mourns the losses on both sides in moving tributes. His skillful writing makes this book an enjoyable record of this crucial time in our history.

I've always heard what went on between Grant and Lee inside the house but never heard anything about what was going on with the two armies outside until I read this....I was captivated...My family were all confederates so it really made me admire Chamberlain that in his first hand account he was very respectful...I actually had tears....Thank you Joshua L. Chamberlain where ever you are...You were a good and decent person....

To read it is to weep again for the tragedy of the American Civil War. Highly recommended.

I wept when I read this, having made some cursory studies of the American Civil War and having visited at least Gettysburg. The slaughter, the sacrifice, the suffering -- and then the hushed and tragic end. Gen Chamberlain is eloquent and succinct in his touching, brief narrative of Lee's surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia, which took place almost exactly 150 years ago as of yesterday, May 9, 1865.
