These zombielike slaves walk, work, and sleep in cold calculated rows monitored by squidlike biomechanical drones. Sam, the only member of his family unphased by the alien broadcast, joins a resistance group. The teenagers, with the help of a few surviving adults, maintain their lucidity and gear up to fight the invaders. Even with the expert training they receive from mysterious underground benefactors, it may not be enough to stop the biomechanical army that has taken the world hostage. Though light on character development, this is a fast-moving story with nail-biting tension. The dystopian London is gritty and well described, with the novel's only real fault being some confusing action sequences. He has a BA in English Literature and an MA in Twentieth Century Literature, Film, and Television, both from Newcastle University. The day that Alien ships appeared over London was the day that Sams life changed forever. When Sam sees the news with the pictures of the ship over London he thinks its a trick, that is until he turns to his mother to ask her and sees that she isnt responding. Its like she is a zombie. When his mother and sister walk out of the house Sam follows. He cant believe his eyes when he sees the things near the ship. Why is he the only one not in a trance? What has happened to humanity?

Six months on and Sam still isn't closer to any answers. Every day is a struggle to find food and water without getting caught. He is totally alone, or so he thinks! When he meets another survivor he hopes to get the answers he needs.

This was a refreshing surprise. Its aimed at a younger reader but any age will enjoy it. The author has a way of drawing you in to the story. It starts straight with Sam trying to survive and dodge the aliens. He struggles for food and water but what really hits is his loneliness. Six months with no sign of any other person not affected by the aliens and you see him wondering if he is the only one still functioning. He is a strong character but you still feel sorry for him.

EarthFall was at times hard to see where it was going and at times I was a little bored. The story itself was awesome and very descriptive but a little boring at the start. It picked up when Sam met up with the other survivors though. He really came into his own then.

Overall it was a solid story. The concept is believable if a little odd at times. The action when it took off really made the story so much better. The characters were all strong and capable and I liked each of them. I will say that what bothered me at times was how one minute Sam has never fired a gun and the next he is hitting everything. The author didn't really give us a sense of how he trained. Even though the author did have a very descriptive manner, he did skim over certain things!

In the end I'm glad I read this. I enjoyed it and will read book 2 to see what happens. I purchased a paperback for my boys because I know its something they will love and Id highly recommend for kids.

Charming drawing book

This will be loved by many kids, I will attest to that. I believe that every kid loves to scribble, let alone draw actual figures such as animals. On this book, kids are taught to draw animals, with friendly instructions that I think can be understood clearly by kids. I found this book after reading Binky's New Home which also I believe that it will be enjoyed by the kids.

Adam Might Not Be Who I Thought He Was.

Okay I’m going to say it, I’m a team Adam girl all the way. I know, I know Warner has a huge vocal fan base and I totally respect that, please don’t try to sway me you won’t. This series is exactly the reason I love/hate love triangles. I always like the underdog, the nice guy, the friend the guy who never gets the girl. It pains me to say this but I liked Warner’s Novella better, shhhh don’t tell Adam.

Adam is a protector, he sees Juliette for who she is and who she is becoming. He sees her strengths and weaknesses and really only wants to keep the people he loves safe. But when both Juliette and his little brother James are in immanent danger at the same time he must choose who to try to save. While I think it is a no brainer on who he must choose he struggles with it.

I was a little disappointed with Adams POV, I thought it would be a little stronger but I found that I didn’t like him as much when not seen through Juliette’s eyes. However he knows that he loves Juliette, but is conflicted by how she is moving away from him and dumped him. Can he go after her if it means putting James in danger again? At the conclusion of Fracture me Adam really is fractured torn between the two people he loves and blames himself for Juliette’s situation.

After reading Frature Me and the first few chapters of Ignite Me I really hope that Adam and Juliette don’t spend the majority of Ignite Me apart. I also hope that the loss they felt will be the wake up call they need. But it could go either way still in the love triangle, which is why I rarely read them. Adam must protect James but does that mean he must leave Juliette to Warner or will he fight for her still. I guess we will see in February.

Side note, Kenji was still awesome as always.

Not what I thought he'd be

I remember the first time I heard about Shatter Me. It sounded interesting enough and the cover looked pretty good so I got it on the iBookstore. I had it on my library for months. I don't remember why I decided to pick it up the day I did, but I do remember thinking WHY THE HELL DIDN'T I PICK THIS UP SOONER?!?!?!? after reading about ten pages. I was that hooked. So much so that I bought a hardcover copy of the book (with the old cover) AND I bought the paperback version with the new cover. Ever since then I've been in love with Tahereh Mafi's writing style. Juliette captivated me from those first few pages and she hasn't set me go. Not one bit. When I found out Warner was getting his own novella, I freaked! I'm not sure if it was a good freaking out or a bad freaking out. But one thing was clear: I was picking that sucker up. And I did. And after reading Destroy Me I was conflicted like no other. I still loved Adam, but after being inside Warner's head, I had started to sympathize with him. Then I read Unravel Me and I was never the same.

A couple of months ago Mafi announced she was releasing yet another novella, this time in Adam's POV. I WAS SO PSYCHED!!!! I'd fallen in love with Adam from the beginning, and while I'd grown to like Warner, I was still Team Adam. All the way. So when Adam's novella was released today, I immediately bought it.

Fracture Me starts off right before they set out to fight. Reliving those scenes through Adam's eyes was... interesting. I'm so used to Juliette's constant mumblings and scattered thoughts that reading Adam's more grounded thoughts was a bit disorienting. Still, nothing to write home about. The more I read, the more I was let down. I absolutely freaking hate feeling like this, but I'm so disappointed in Adam. His constant need for her to be back at Omega Point and away for the fight was so annoying! Makes me believe he sees her as weak. *SPOILER* And to think, if he'd gotten his way, Juliette probably would have ended up dead. Things between Juliette and Adam were shaky in Unravel Me, but I always believed he loved her. And after reading this novella, I'm starting to think that while he may have loved her at first, now he just loves the idea of her. I hope to God I'm wrong.

I completely understand Adam's dedication to James. I LOVE James. I think he's an amazing little kid. And I totally understood Adam's need to keep him safe at all cost. James is the only family he has left--he's basically raised him. It's been to two of them against the world for so long and I admire that. I love that. I love them. So I agree with Adam when he went off after James instead of Juliette. But I got the overwhelming sense that Adam was just done with it all. I understand being sick of all the fighting and running and fearing for your life. I get why Adam wants to just get away from it all--but that's not happening any time soon. He knows that. We all know that. And what I couldn't understand was this: the girl he claims to love so much has been captured and taken who knows where, and even once he's reunited with James, Adam is still hesitant to rescue Juliette. Ugh, I just wanted to reach inside the pages and slap some sense into him. Thank God for Kenji. I felt like it was Kenji who was in love with Juliette, not Adam.
Overall, I sort of wished I'd never gotten inside Adam's head. Maybe I built him into this amazing guy--and he is--but his reluctance just killed me. Yes, Juliette broke his heart, but after all they've been through together? I expected more. And now I'm just that much more conflicted in my feelings about Warner. Because even though Warner's kind of a sociopath, he truly loves Juliette. I believe that. His way of showing it may be completely out of the norm, but I feel it in my gut that he would do anything for her.

I'm both dreading and anticipating Ignite Me. This is when it all goes down, and at this point I have no idea what's going to happen. Juliette loves Adam. But she also loves Warner. The one thing I do know is this: the conclusion to Shatter Me is going to explosive and unforgettable. *sigh* Now I just have to find a way to occupy myself until February 4th.

Still a warner fan

I am a die hard Warner fan, but I was willing to give Adam a fair shot. I try to keep an open mind.
Honestly?
This book only intensified my feelings about Warner and Adam.
Here is the bottom line. Adam was an important part of who Juliette was and who she has become. he pulled her out of a bad, horrible place. he taught her she was worth something. She is worth loving.
But Adam has done all he can for her. His priorities are where they should be, and her priorities are shifting to where they should be, but they are not the same priorities. Adam loves her, but he loves his brother more. And that is ok, it is the way it should be.
Juliette feels an understood loyalty to him, but is he still right for her? Is she still right for him?
Warner has only her That is all his world revolves around. And Juliette has no one else. Those two make each other better, stronger. After reading this, it became obvious that Adam does not understand her. Juliette is broken in many ways, and Adam is still trying to fix her. She can't be fixed. Adam looks at her as something to protect, he sees her weaknesses instead of her potential.
To warner, all she is potential and the kind of crazy he can relate with.
After this, if she doesn't end up with Warner I will be shocked. In fact, if she doesn't end up with Warner, it will just be wrong. Or MAYBE Kenji. I am starting to see that as a possibility.
This book includes the first two chapters of Ignite me, and really I just got myself excited and left out on a ledge by reading it. I am so excited about Ignite me!

If you try to teach yourself beading from a book it can be very difficult, but the pictures of the pliers and wire show exactly how the wire should look as you are working and after you are finished. Brilliant! I wish I had had this book when I started!

I also like how each project gives you a specified length for how much wire you will need to make a project. If you want to do a necklace for a friend, how long should it be without borrowing their neck to measure and ruin the surprise? Concrete measurements are a great touch and also helpful if you are making jewelry to sell.

I have been crafting for well over 40 years. Most of what I know I've learned from books. I haven't done very much with wire or jewelry making and want to give it a try so I picked up this book.
I found the book to be a great resource and the author very knowledgeable. Detailed pictures of the tools needed and the step by step instructions for the craft make this a fantastic teaching book. More technique than pretty pictures

Of all the books on bead jewelry I have read this is the first to explain the basics of making your own eye pins, jump rings from a piece of wire and other wiring techniques in a manner that I found easy to follow. There are some projects for those who like to follow instructions but this is more of a book for innovators who just want to know basics without attending a course.

~~ Can an ex-felon and a stuffy school master find love? ~~

Meet Darcy, an ex-felon, who has been sent to New York to work at a reformatory school for boys run by Stewart and Charleigh Lyons. Charleigh had at one point been on the inside too but a new relationship with Jesus had changed her around.

The character of Darcy can be described as a "little rough around the edges" which actually brings quite a bit of humor to the book. Charleigh tries to warn Brent, the school master, before he leaves to pick her up but nothing could have prepared him for the experience!

Cleverly written speech by the author has Darcy speaking in Cockney rhyming slang - apples and pears (stairs), Uncle Fred (bread) etc. My mother-in-law was a Cockney so Richard will often use some of the same phrases.

Easy to read story of a very unlikely duo falling in love. Not only is their story written but also some of the trials Stewart and Charleigh face etc, along with the many different boys. Definitely based on Christian values but not overly preachy.

Became Good

Darcy Evans ran away from an abusive father when she was ten and survived on the streets of London by joining a young band of thieves. When she landed in a reform school, she met Charleigh, and when she got out, she traveled to America at her friend’s invitation to help in a different kind of reform school for boys. There she meets stuffy, judgmental Brent Thomas, the schoolmaster, but Darcy finds herself wanting to win his approval. In the meantime, some of the boys are always cooking up trouble.

I didn't like the opening of this one very much. It abruptly dropped the reader into the story with almost no introduction or explanation. I didn't know who Darcy was or what was happening, and the story was hard to follow at first. This changed quickly, however, and it became very good. The only thing I questioned was if potential soldiers were dismissed from the Civil War because of flat feet. It did happen during WW II, but I don’t think it happened as early as the 1860’s. Overall, however, this was an enjoyable read.

The primary challenges facing grease lubrication research today are three-fold. The first challenge is to develop greases that will provide longer life and/or are able to operate under more severe conditions (extreme low and high temperature and speed). The second challenge is the development of predictive tools, such as numerical models or expert systems. The third challenge is to design bearing systems that increase grease life. All of these aspects require a fundamental understanding of the lubrication mechanisms of greases.
