Lynn and her mother are good shots, picking off stray travelers who are tempted by their pond. Cholera outbreaks throughout the world mean that even when water is available, it could be deadly, and the 16-year-old and her mother spend their days purifying the pond water, hunting for food, persuading meager crops to grow, and standing sentry on their roof to guard against strangers. After her mother is killed by coyotes, Lynn tries to be self-reliant, but she knows that in time the men from a nearby settlement will attempt to seize her land. When her taciturn neighbor Stebbs offers help, she slowly opens herself to his friendship, and her lifelong solitude is further fractured when she meets a family that is trying to survive on the banks of a nearby stream. Lynn grows attached to the little girl and takes her into her home when Lucy's mother, who is starving and in labor, is unable to care for her. Lynn finds herself drawn to Lucy's uncle, who is about her own age. Things come to a head when Lucy becomes deathly ill and the band of men from the nearby settlement attack Lynn's house. An overreliance on expository dialogue leads to clumsy and unnatural-sounding exchanges. A stark look into a future that is truly about trust, sacrifice, and hope.

A stark, realistic look into a dystopian future, Not A Drop To Drink, sets aside the usual young adult novel distractions of teen angst and love triangles and goes straight for the jugular. Life in a future such as this will be about survival and protecting what little property we have left. We will learn to trust no one, care for no others, and it will be violent.

Mindy McGinnis' debut novel begins with sixteen year-old Lynn and her mother's daily ritual of sitting on top of their rural home, rifles at the ready, to protect their pond, their only source of now precious water after an unidentified apocalypse followed by a cholera pandemic. Protection of the pond has been a constant in Lynn's life. A lonely, insular life, her mother has trained her to never trust, or assist, strangers. And their days are spent purifying the pond water, stocking up on food and firewood for the winter, and shooting anyone who approaches their property. Carrying a rifle since the age of nine, Lynn has learned to shoot animal, and human, predators.

The only other person Lynn knows is an older neighbor down the road named Stebbs, whom she met just once as a young child, and now watches with binoculars. Their relationship is based on a tacit agreement to maintain distance, and to never ask for help. Then, tragedy strikes for Lynn and she finds herself alone with winter approaching. It is only when Stebbs takes a tentative first step with Lynn that she allows him limited, and wary, contact. Mother raised her to be self-sufficient and to trust no one. But, Lynn's time with Stebbs brings about a remarkable realization: she was lonely. Even with mother as her constant companion, Lynn was lonely.

Her relationship with Stebbs soon brings Lynn into contact with a family displaced from the city. Uneducated in the strategies of survival, the family is starving, and dying. This is when Lynn must make a choice: does she disregard the lifelong teachings of her mother or does she extend a hand, and her precious supplies, to total strangers.

While Not A Drop To Drink may sound bleak and depressing, the story is truly about trust and sacrifice and hope. Lynn's actions, and growth as a person, are what make the story rich and compelling. The stark, isolated, reality of her world, while never a paradise, evolves into what is possibly a hopeful future. Make no mistake though, this book is not afraid to pull punches and there are parts that made me cry.

I recommend this book to the readers who like to read the dystopia genre, especially Young Adult, specifically because of it's no-nonsense approach to this subject, the beautiful writing, and it leaves the teen angst at the door. I look forward to her next novel.

Survival in a dystopian future with water shortages

The YA novel, set in a future where water is scarce, is about survival and compassion.

Lynn and her mother live alone in the country and their daily routine revolves around the gathering, purifying and protecting of their water. It is a hard and solitary life of constant vigilance and is the only life Lynn has ever known. They have a neighbor but never speak to him. And they shoot any strangers who come near their water. Smoke rising in the east and south indicate there are new groups of strangers nearby. I don't want to spoil the story, but those new strangers will dramatically change the course of Lynn's life.

As an adult reader, I thought this book was okay, but not great. Although it is set during a time when water is in short supply, technology does not seem to have changed at all. In fact, because of the way Lynn lives, it almost has the feel of a frontier turn-of-the century story.

Lynn is not a particularly warm and fuzzy heroine so it is hard to really like her thought readers in the intended age demographic might like her a lot more.

I originally said there is no swearing or sex in this book so parents don't need to worry about that. But one of the commenters below pointed out that I had missed it. I still don't think there are any f-bombs but do note that there is some milder profanity. There isn't any "on screen" sex in the book. However, as the commenter below points out, there is the threat of, and discussions about, women being raped and/or abused by men. The actual treatment is "off camera" but it may not be appropriate for younger readers.

The violence may also be much for younger readers. As noted above, Lynn & her mother shoot anyone who comes near their water and there is also a threat from wolves.

Loved the main character, and 3/4 of the story but the ending was NOT for me.

Wow. I totally can't imagine living in a world like this and can't help but think that I would be one of the people who couldn't survive. So, when I meet a strong and capable main character like Lynn, I am always in awe.
Lynn grew up with her mom, and her mom taught her everything she knew. In this world, their pond is the most important thing, and they defend it with their lives, and for them that also means taking lives. Lynn knows how to shoot, purify water, cut down trees, skin and dress a deer basically everything that keeps them alive in a world without help, stores, electricity, or running water.
It is so hard to review without spoiling things, but basically Lynn grows through some of the people that unexpectedly comes into her life and makes her question some of the things she was taught about outsiders. There are also some that prove everything right. There is such character development and that is one of the things that I love.
Through a little girl Lucy, the most change, determination and strength came out in Lynn. She not only had a helper in Lucy, and someone else to teach how to survive, but she also had a lot to learn from the little girl. Seeing the bigger picture, survival, and not bothering the adults even with something that should have needed their attention, she was selfless and caring to others. The theme of family, togetherness, and friendship really shone through these two characters in particular.
The romance is sweet and subtle, a slow build, my favorite kind. Lynn knew nothing about men except they were evil from her mom, and she realizes that just like women, they can be good or bad, or some shade of gray in the middle. So it is really fun to watch her learn what flirting is.
The story would have been a five star if it weren't for the ending. I guess that for some it would be great, realistic, and fitting for the story, but for me, it did not work. I was so heartbroken and though the way it ended up was full of hope in promise in others, I still couldn't get over the shock and the loss.

Bottom Line: Loved the main character, and 3/4 of the story but the ending was NOT for me.

Too long, hero unconvincing

Straight in the recycling for this one. This wicked rake is not convincing - he's involved in a scandal every week but seems never to see it coming or be able to stop himself from behaving badly. I don't want a hero that's a) naive or b) a sex addict, thanks.

The heroine is quite well done - spirited but not rude or too 21st century. She actually comes across as intelligent. But her attraction for the hero is primarily that she repeatedly refuses him, so I wonder how they will fare in married life. Even his final declaration that she is the one, etc etc, is unconvincing - his past behaviour is evidence that he'll get bored and start wandering sooner rather than later. This makes the ending too tinged with uncertainty to truly be a "happy" one.

And, like many historicals, this one suffers from being too long by about 100 pages. I don't need endless examinations of their feelings, I really don't. Not if there's nothing new to be said.

Historical accuracy anyone?

This story started out slowly but by the third chapter it seemed to be picking up the pace and I was prepared to enjoy it. The ploy by which H/h got engaged "by accident" required a big suspension of disbelief but I went with it. And then the heroine went off with the hero on a road trip, spending the night at an inn, going to a house party --UNCHAPERONED. That was just the start of a nonsensical story so filled with anachronisms that it became unreadable. If I'd wanted to read modern day language and mores, I would have bought a contemporary. As it is, I regret the time spent on this one. Just cannot recommend.

As others have already done so I will not write a description but rather go into how much and why I loved this book.

Miss Rodale did a wonderful job developing both characters and their romance. I found Emma to be an endearing, relatable and sweet character. I like the fact that her doubts and insecurities didn't just disappear all of the sudden which is a fault that most authors make when pairing the handsome rogue with the plain wallflower. I applaud Miss Rodale for making us the readers take that journey along with Emma from being the Plain Wallflower to her Happily ever after while dealing with her insecurities and doubts in a way that was believable, but most of all relatable.

As someone else mention, there were a couple of inaccuracies that bother me but not enough to get in the way of my enjoyment. First off no engage couple in Regency England would be allowed to go of a trip by themselves with no chaperone, while reading that part the first thing that came to my mind was were is her chaperone. I guess that allowances could be made for the fact that they were going to the Fortune Games and thus were standing to gain 90K pounds but still it was a little grating. Also Emma didn't seem to go anywhere with a chaperone I am guessing that if she was totally and utterly compromised she would have to get married but still appearances should have been kept.

I love Lady Agatha and her Fortune Games and the obvious similarities to the Hunger Games, those scenes were some of the most fun.

All in all Blake and Emma are most of all relatable and endearing and I love reading them and I can't wait to read the rest of the series with Lady Olivia and Miss Prudence. And on a side note a truly hope Miss Dawkins gets if not her own book at least a novella.

This was a great start to Wallflower series and I am looking forward to the contemporary retelling of this story in the Bad Boy Billionaire Wicked Arrangement.

Great Suspense

I really loved this story. It begins with Jenny, a Squire's daughter living in the country. She is trying to recover from her fiancee's death at Waterloo. Her father and aunt are going to have her go to London for a season so she can meet someone to marry and she doesn't want to do this. Then we meet Jason, the Earl of Danfield. He is looking for a wife to fulfill a clause in his fathers' will that he marry by age 29 to get the rest of his inheritance. He doesn't want to marry, and he talks Jenny into a marriage of convenience and friendship.Along the way, they fall in love. Once they arrive at the Earl's castle, dangerous things begin to happen to them. You will be shocked to find out who is trying to hurt them, it was such a shock! Some mature love scenes and a great suspense.

Thriller, chilling, suspenseful "who is trying to kill". I would never of guessed who the person was trying to murder the new lady of the castle or her husband. Was it the obvious or someone in the background. You will need to read this novel to find out and enjoy the suspense for yourself

Turow continues his obsession with innocence (his breakout first novel, Presumed Innocent, 1987, was followed after 20 years by Innocent). In this strained reworking of the theme, the mystery centers on identical twins, Cass and Paul Giannis, who both attend a party at the home of their father’s greatest rival, Zeus Kronon, in 1982. The mythological references are many, most seeming to underscore the simple point that the book is about twins. The pivot for the action is the 2008 release from prison of Cass, who confessed to the 1982 murder of his girlfriend Athena Kronon (daughter of Zeus). Cass has been destroyed by prison; Paul is a state senator and mayoral candidate. Matters get further complicated when an ex–FBI agent and a PI reopen the murder case on their own, convinced that Cass is innocent. Much of this book is weighed down by unnecessary accounts of characters’ lives from childhood on. The interesting part has to do with the forensics of fingerprinting and DNA, though the 2008 time frame limits what can be done with that. All in all, a disappointment from a much-loved author. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Turow may have drunk from the well of innocence one too many times, but his fans are still thirsty. --Connie Fletcher

A review of the entire novel

This is a review of the entire novel, not of the free four chapter preview.

The identical twin crime novel has been done so often it's become a cliché, but Scott Turow knows that. Just when I thought I had it figured out and was disappointed that the story followed an obvious path, the plot twisted. Then it twisted again, becoming a different story altogether. Kudos to Turow for taking a familiar plot device and doing something new with it. Unlike some of Turow's other novels, Identical isn't a courtroom thriller, a departure that might disappoint readers who want an author to write the same novel over and over. It is instead a novel about the intersection of politics and law. That's been done before too, but few writers do it better than Turow. Identical is set in the familiar legal terrain of Kindle County and features several secondary characters (including Sandy Stern) who are well known to Turow's fans.

Paul Gianis is a brand new attorney who, as the novel opens in 1982, will soon become a prosecutor in Kindle County. Paul is attending a picnic where several of the novel's principle characters are gathered, including Paul's twin brother Cass, his mother Lidia, his brother's caustic girlfriend Dita, and Dita's father, Zeus Kronen. After warning us that the day of the picnic will change Paul's life, Scott Turow jumps ahead to a 2008 parole hearing, where we meet Dita's brother, Hal Kronen, a wealthy real estate developer. Cass has nearly finished serving his sentence for Dita's murder. Also attending the hearing are Kronen's vice president for security, Evon Miller, and his private investigator, Tim Brodie. Paul, having departed the prosecutor's office for a lucrative personal injury practice, is now the majority leader in the state senate and a candidate for mayor. He isn't happy when Kronen publicly accuses him of playing a role in Dita's murder, an accusation that threatens to derail his campaign if Paul doesn't neutralize it.

Turow crams a lot of story into a few pages, and that's just the beginning. Turow sets up the central mystery, common to identical twin crime novels, early on: which twin did what? Occasional flashbacks to 1982 lead to an eventual answer. The answer is complicated by a present day plot twist (revealed about two-thirds in) that is relatively obvious, but Turow clearly intends the reader to guess some of what's happening. At roughly the same two-thirds point, Turow shocks the reader with several revelations that force Miller and Brodie (and the reader) to rethink the mystery.

The meat of the novel comes after Paul files a lawsuit for defamation against Kronen. Much of the story is about dirty politics and the ability of people with money to smear candidates they dislike. Turow adds a bit of drama to each character's life without sidetracking the main story, which contains enough family drama to drive a multigenerational saga.

Identical isn't as clever as Turow's best novels, but lesser Turow is still better than most writers of legal thrillers can manage. The story kept me guessing and my attention never wavered. Strong characters and a strong plot are enough to earn Identical a strong recommendation, even if it isn't my favorite Turow.

A disjointed, uneven read.

Disappointing. I generally love all things Scott Turow, but I have to to reiterate the complaint in a number of other reviews about the uneven, ofter trite prose in this book. I, too, wondered if Turow actually wrote all or even part of it. The first entry in "Paul's" voice is clunky, almost amateurish, then it's seems to get better for a bit. It was clearly either written or edited by a different person. I also found an incredible number of word choice errors, as if spellcheck had gone rogue or the editor had sleepwalked his/her way through this novel. A novice, maybe? But why would the publisher do that to a big name like Turow? One example of many...at one point, the character Evon ( a very major player in the book) is reminiscing about her days with the FBI, and the copy reads: "In prospect, Evon had regarded retirement from the FBI as something akin to dying." Say what? did he (they) mean in "retrospect"? This kind of thing happened so often, I almost put the book down. A shame, because the plot is twisted and engaging.

About the Author
Padma Lakshmi is the Emmy-nominated host of the highly rated and critically acclaimed Emmy-winning Bravo series Top Chef, and the author of two cookbooks: Tangy, Tart, Hot & Sweet and the award-winning Easy Exotic. In addition to her culinary achievements, Lakshmi has contributed to such magazines as Vogue, Gourmet, and Harper's Bazaar (UK and US), and penned a syndicated column on fashion and food for the New York Times. Her television-hosting credits include Planet Food and Padma's Passport, as well as other programs in the United States and abroad. A global style icon and the first internationally successful Indian supermodel, Lakshmi also helms companies of her own such as the Padma Collection and Easy Exotic.

Lakshmi is a cofounder of the Endometriosis Foundation of America. Since 2009, the organization has advocated for early diagnosis, promoted research, and raised awareness in the medical community and the greater public about this devastating chronic disease which affects over 190 million women worldwide.

She lives in New York City with her daughter.

Imagine sitting with a new dear friend, sharing a meal and childhood stories, sometimes laughing, sometimes crying, asking "then what", and leaving mesmerized and amazed at the resilience a soul can possess. That is this memoir. I've watched Top Chef for ten (!) years, and have always been impressed with Padma's grace and poise, even while eating something less than appetizing (hunk of fat, anyone?). Beyond being beautiful, Padma guides the chefs and the show through each season with humor and a gentle touch. I decided to read "Love, Loss, and What We Ate" partly because of the title, and partly because of the revelation that she'd been molested as a child. As a survivor, I was dying to know how she came out on the other side. I got so much more. There is an immediacy and intimacy to this book, that feels like she is just sitting at my table, having a cup of tea, which I think is really remarkable for anyone sharing their story.

Padma Lakshmi's memoir has chaatpati

As a long time viewer of Top Chef and a modest supporter of the Endometriosis Foundation of America, I may have been predisposed into liking "Love, Loss, and What We Ate". With that said, Padma is a gifted storyteller, using vivid details of sight, sound, smells, touches, and tastes to transport you to her experiences in India, Europe, and the United States. There's flavors for every reader's palette: from her immigration story growing up between 2 cultures, fans of Top Chef will enjoy her behind the scenes anecdotes about the show, the highs and lows of relationships, and mothers everywhere can identify with journey into motherhood.

I was struck by the honesty and introspection in which Padma discusses very difficult topics like childhood abuse, the dissolution of her marriage with Salman, diagnosis of endometriosis, pregnancy, and the tragic passing of Teddy. Beyond the physical scar on her right arm suffered in adolescence, Padma shares her mental and emotional scars, revealing a vulnerable, insecure woman who persevered to achieve the success and acclaim that she has.

With a combination of joy, sorrow, sensuality, grace, and a dash of humor, Love, Loss, and What We Ate is a soulful memoir that has chaatpati. Bravo Padma!

Was thrilled by the first part of the book, emotive story of all encompassing love. About page 250 in devolves into a rather peculiar rendition of what her child ate, or rather, could not eat. It changed into a "mommy" book and was boring to the point of distraction!
