There was no way she could hide the bump…

Lenora Whitaker never thought spending one night with U.S. marshal Clayton Caldwell would put them in the crosshairs of a killer. Connected to a protective custody case gone awry, they are both attacked, leaving Clayton with a damaging case of amnesia and forcing Lenora to go on the run.

After taking a bullet to save her life, Clayton is unable to remember Lenora or that he's the father of her baby. But the moment he tracks her down, it's clear the attraction is still there. Hiding out together on his Texas ranch, Clayton admires the way Lenora will do anything to protect her unborn baby. Connecting with the pregnant beauty also triggers the first hints of his past. A past that could mend their broken lives—or unearth secrets he'd be better off forgetting.

Marshal Clayton Caldwell figured this could be bad.

He waited at the window and watched the woman exit the dark blue car that she'd just parked next to the Marshals Service building where he worked. She glanced around, but because of the other vehicles, there was no way she could have seen the black truck that eased to a stop about a half block up the street.

Clayton saw it, all right.

And he didn't like the looks of this.

Had the driver of the truck followed her?

And if so, why?

Since Clayton had been at the second-floor window finishing his morning coffee and watching for his visitor to arrive, he'd been able to see the car and truck. Both unfamiliar. Not that he knew every vehicle in Maverick Springs, but the truck's front license plate was obscured with mud or something. That, and the fact that the driver didn't get out, made Clayton very uneasy.

Or maybe that was just a reaction to Lenora Whita-ker's visit.

Until the night before, he hadn't heard from her since—well, just since. After nearly two months, Clayton had figured it'd stay that way.

"Everything okay?" Harlan McKinney asked. His fellow marshal and foster brother was seated in the corner of the desk-clogged room. Harlan's attention was on some reports, but judging from his concerned look, he'd given Clayton a glance or two.

That's when Clayton realized he'd slipped his hand over the Glock in his leather waist holster.

Old habits.

Sometimes he wished he could turn off this blasted LEO—law enforcement officer—alarm in his head, but he'd been a marshal for nearly a decade now. Too long to turn off alarms. Or to get a decent night's sleep, for that matter.

"I'm not sure if everything's okay," Clayton answered. "I got a bad feeling about this."

And that sent Harlan from his desk and to the window, where he looked out, as well.

Clayton waited, watching the wipers on the truck slash away the rain from the windshield. Not a gentle April shower. More like a downpour. But it wasn't long before he heard the footsteps on the stairs. Not just ordinary footsteps, though.

Heels.

They really stood out in the building where all six of the marshals were male. There were female employees in the other parts of the building, but this time of day they rarely came to the second floor.

The woman stepped into the doorway of the squad room, her attention zooming right to Clayton.

Lenora.

Yeah, it was her, all right. She stood there, her damp shoulder-length brown hair clinging to the sides of her face. The water dripped from her raincoat and the umbrella she had clutched in her hand and splattered onto the floor.

"Clayton," she said on a rise of breath.

Her gaze darted to Harlan, and she cleared her throat. Maybe because Harlan was just plain intimidating, with his linebacker-size body and hard lawman's eyes. Thankfully, Clayton's foster brother went back to his desk in the corner and pretended not to notice they were in the room.

"Marshal Caldwell," Lenora corrected herself.

That surprised him. Women he'd had sex with didn't usually get so formal after the fact. Of course, Lenora and he had only been together for that one night—and at one of the worst times in her life, to boot—but still she had to remember it.

He certainly did.

Despite being all mussed and wet, Lenora was a darn attractive woman. And judging from her dark green eyes, a troubled one.

"There've been no updates on the investigation," Clayton volunteered to test her reaction. Was that why she'd asked to see him?

Clayton glanced at Harlan, who was glancing at them and no doubt wondering what the heck was going on.

So was Clayton.

Lenora had been cryptic when she'd called the day before, saying only that she needed to catch up with him.

"No updates," she repeated. "Yes." And that was all she said for several seconds, before she cleared her throat again. "Marshal Walker called a few weeks ago to say there'd been no progress."

Marshal Walker, as in Dallas Walker, another of Clayton's foster brothers. Dallas was indeed in charge of the investigation into the murder of Lenora's best friend. A murder that'd happened nearly two months ago.

The last time Clayton had seen Lenora.

And they hadn't exactly parted under good circumstances. In fact, Lenora had sneaked out of the hotel room while Clayton was in the shower, and she'd left him a note saying it'd been a big mistake for them to have sex.

Since that wasn't exactly a good memory, Clayton pushed it aside and hitched his thumb toward the window. "Did someone in a black pickup follow you here?"

Lenora's eyes widened, and she practically ran across the room to look out.

No truck.

"Sorry," he mumbled. "It was there a few seconds ago. Guess I was wrong about it." Funny, though, his LEO alarm was usually a hundred percent.

Lenora was breathing through her mouth now, and her eyes were still wide. Her gaze darted around the parking lot and street. "You thought I was being followed?"

"Were you?"

"Maybe." Her bottom lip trembled. "I'd hoped it was my imagination. I'm not sleeping well, and the nightmares are getting worse."

Yeah. He knew all about those nightmares. A woman, Jill Lang, was dead. Gunned down right in front of both of them. She'd been Lenora's best friend. And a witness in Clayton's protective custody.

He didn't expect the nightmares to end anytime soon.

Clayton could practically feel Lenora's worry, and even though she'd given him the brush-off two months ago, he reached out and touched her arm. Well, the sleeve of her wet raincoat, anyway. He hoped it was a sympathetic gesture without getting too close.

"Jill's killer was caught," Clayton reminded her. And even though the man had yet to go to trial, he would be convicted of murder. No doubt about that, since there was a mountain of evidence against him, including Clayton's and Lenora's own eyewitness accounts.

But maybe this wasn't about Jill's killer.

"I know about the break-ins at your house in Eagle Pass," Clayton told her.

Lenora pulled her shoulders back, and she shook her head. "How? Why?"

Both good questions. He didn't exactly have good answers, though, and it sounded a little creepy to admit that he'd kept tabs on her. But he had. Too bad Clayton didn't know exactly why he'd done it. He'd had short-term relationships before that he'd dismissed without a second thought.

So why hadn't he been able to do that with Lenora?

Because there was something that wasn't quite right about this. Something he couldn't put his finger on.

She pushed her hair from her face and glanced at Harlan again. "Could we go somewhere private and talk?" she asked Clayton.

Maybe Harlan was making her nervous. He had that effect on people. But from Clayton's assessment, Lenora had been nervous before she even came into the room.

Clayton set his coffee on his desk and grabbed his jacket. "There's a diner across the street," he said, already walking toward the door. "Call me if something comes up," he added to Harlan.

"Tell me about these break-ins," Clayton insisted as soon as they were out of the office.

Lenora gave a weary sigh. "The first one happened last week—as I'm sure you read in the report. I wasn't there, but the person destroyed an antique panel that I'd been restoring."

Property damage. Much better than damaging her body, but he could tell from her tone that it still hurt. Clayton didn't know a lot about Lenora's job in stained-glass restoration, but he remembered her saying that she often worked with expensive antiques.

"What about the second break-in?" He stopped just outside the building and looked around. Lenora did, too. There was no sign of that black truck, so he took her by arm and led her across the street.

"You already know." She sounded upset, or something, that he'd read the police reports, but Clayton didn't intend to apologize for that.

"I still consider you my business," he clarified.

She blinked. "Why? Because my friend was killed on your watch? If so, that wasn't your fault."

The question threw him. Yeah, that was part of it—that a woman in his protective custody had died. In fact, that should have been all of it. But there were feelings buried beneath this, and maybe Lenora's blink meant it wasn't all business for her, either.

She looked away, mumbled something he didn't catch. "Back to the break-ins. Again, I wasn't there for the second one. In fact, I've been living at one of those extended-stay hotels since the first break-in." Lenora paused. "The intruder left threatening messages scrawled on my bedroom wall."

Clayton cursed. That hadn't been in the initial report he'd read from the Eagle Pass P.D., but Clayton knew this was an escalation. If Lenora had been there—

But he cut off that bad thought.

Maybe their one-night stand had made her want to keep some distance between them. But she was here now, and though she hadn't said it specifically, she appeared to be asking for his help.

Which she would get.

And Clayton assured himself that it had nothing to do with the night he'd spent with her. Or this cool heat still simmering between them. He would have helped anyone who needed it.

They took a booth by the window so he could keep watch for the truck, and he asked the waitress to bring them two cups of coffee.

"Do the cops have a suspect in the break-ins?" he asked.

Lenora shook her head. "They don't have any prints, any type of trace evidence, and none of my neighbors saw anyone suspicious."

That meshed with the reports he'd read, but witnesses often came forward later. Maybe that would happen in this case.

"Tell me who you think was in that truck," Clayton said.

Another head shake. "I don't know."

"A boyfriend, maybe?"

"No. I'm not seeing anyone. And I don't think I've been followed before." Lenora blew out another breath, and she had a death grip on the coffee cup. "There's more." She said it so softly that Clayton didn't actually hear her. He saw the words form on her lips.

"What?" he pushed when she didn't explain.

This was beyond a bad feeling, and he instantly went back to the night they'd spent together. He wasn't sure he was ready to deal with what she was about to say, but he also knew he had to hear it.

"You're pregnant?" he came out and asked.

No blink this time. She nodded.

And that nod sent his heartbeat racing out of control.

Oh, man.

It felt as if someone had punched him in the gut. All the air left his lungs. All. But he fought to get enough breath so he could speak.

However, Lenora beat him to it. "I wrestled with whether to tell you at all. I mean, we hardly know each other. But I decided if our situations were reversed, I'd want to know. By the way, I don't expect anything from you," she added.

That gave him a jolt of breath he needed. "Well, you damn well should expect something."

Lenora eased back, her attention fixed to him. "Obviously, you're not pleased about this—"

"Only because I didn't see it coming."

"Yes." And she repeated that. "It caught me off guard, too. We used protection, but something must have gone wrong."

Obviously.

He pulled in a couple of quick breaths and hoped it'd clear his head. He needed to think. To say the right thing.

Whatever that was.

A baby!

He'd never planned on being a father. Never. And this was a shock that made him speechless.

She looked up. Their gazes connected. But then Lenora looked away again. Not at the coffee this time, but rather out the window.

"Is that the black truck you saw?" Her attention was on something over his shoulder.

Clayton turned in that direction and saw the truck. Yeah. It was the same one. It was creeping along Main Street, going past the diner.

Unlike before, the window on the passenger's side was halfway down. There didn't appear to be anyone seated there, only the person behind the steering wheel. Clayton couldn't see the guy's face. But he saw the gun.

"Get down!" Clayton shouted to Lenora and everyone else in the diner.

He reached beneath his jacket to draw his Glock, but it was already too late. The bullet blasted through the window.

Clayton felt the sharp pain in the side of his head, and even over the blast, he heard Lenora yell. He tried to move. Tried to return fire and protect her, but he felt himself falling.

And everything around him turned cold and gray.

another Awesome book!
By paula legate
I loved this book. I've read other books in this series so it was nice to read a follow up. I loved all the characters in this book.
Clayton is part of a big extended family. Clayton and his foster brothers are all U.S. Marshals.
Lenora was in Clayton's protective custody when they witnessed a murder. Later on, Lenora had gone to him to ask about the case, and to let him know she was pregnant. While they were at the diner, someone opened fire, and shot Clayton in the head. The head injury caused holes in Clayton's memory. He didn't remember Lenora or the fact that she was pregnant.
After he was healed and was released for duty, he tracked Lenora down. He knew she had been with him the day he was shot. So he wanted answers. The day he found her, two guys started shooting at both him, and Lenora. He may not remember Lenora, but he was going to do everything to protect her.
This story was filled with action, suspense, and romance.

Sample from chapter 2
Lenora's heart slammed against her chest, and she snatched up the Glock that dropped from Clayton's hand and onto the table. She saw the blood, no way to miss that. No way to avoid that punch of adrenaline, either, that fear. Oh God. Clayton had been shot. That was her first thought, quickly followed by the realization that this could all be her fault. But she shoved those things aside because every second counted now. "Call an ambulance!" Lenora yelled out to no one in particular. She couldn't let this guy get off another shot. She had to stop him, or he could kill Clayton, her and anyone who was unlucky enough to be near them. Lenora took aim at the truck.. And fired. The shot blistered through the air, but it was practically drowned out by the screams and shouts from the other diners.

loving these Marshall's in this series
By Cindy O
Let me start off saying I really liked this book and loving these Marshall's in this series.

Now, I wonder if the author went how many ways and times can I have the heroine and hero shot at? I lost count. Poor couple, it's a good thing she got pregnant before the book started otherwise there wouldn't have been much of chance during all the shootouts The author also did a great job of leading us as readers all over the place - when one string was pulled it unraveled another and another. You didn't know who was bad or badder (yes I said badder :) as some were worse than others) till the very end.

This is a great series and I cannot wait for the rest of the foster brother's books. Each of them is full of action and suspense and great chemistry between the hero and heroine.

Edge of my seat and begging for the next book
By Deni La Force
Just finished "Head of the Dragon" of the "Frontiers Saga" Series. Amazing series that just keeps getting better. I am a broad spectrum SciFi reader from Wells to R. Heinlein to S.S.Tepper to Vonnigut. Each one for their own style and how they fill my needs as a obsessive reader. Ryk Brown is added to that list of favorites and has come to the head of my Adventure SciFi list. His characters are real and in-my-head. I was not a major fan of "battles" but Brown has me enthralled and addicted. He covers it all and he does so keeping a normally mellow reader emotionally engaged and at the edge of his chair. The mark of a artist is to transcend their medium to the emotional. A good book becomes a video in the readers mind and this, Ryk Brown accomplishes with true skill. I finish his books and spend the next few hours with thoughts and adrenaline still racing. "Head of the Dragon" just keeps that fire burning. I like continuing series but get bored when carried to long or they do not move forward with the understood and promised goals of the original plot line. Ryk Brown is like a laser, on track, honest in his tenacious hold on the story line and racing towards a goal line that I am not ready for him to cross yet. His books promise and then follow thru. When it comes to Adventure, plot and well developed characters you will not be disappointed. He is the "read" we all look for in this genre: Fast, engaging and satisfying. There is no place on earth you can have this much fun at this price. Grab a chair, something to drink and strap in for a great ride.

climax of the series to date, classic space opera battles
By David G
As a single book this book leaves you feeling unfinished. It does not end at a natural point, leaving more open issues than completed. So I am going to take an unusual step for me and review the first six books in mass, because they lead to a satisfactory climax. Although, the series is obviously poised to continue into new territory. The series reads like a series of comic books, each a struggle and battle between the hero and evil villains. But the true climactic battle with of one of the arch villains does not occur until book six. Prior to this the heroes fight his henchman in battles limited to a non conclusive scope.

The book is somewhat formulaic in it's creation of a crisis where the senior officers are killed and a junior officer fresh out of military academy must step into the captains role. But this formula is used often because it works. It is exciting and allows the reader to empathize with young men and woman thrust into the maelstrom.

Since I found the series late, I simply bought all six of the first books and read them straight through. This was only acceptable because the kindle price is fairly reasonable. Had I bought these as paperbacks I would have given up on the first novel as too short, inconclusive, and not worth the price. The publisher should consider issuing a compilation of the novels. Like the Lord of the Rings, reading just one of the books in the series is nonsensical, you must read them all or none (although, I do not mean to imply this series quality approaches the Lord of the Rings series).

I love military science fiction. I would suggest reading David Weber, Eric Flint, Tolkien, Raymond Feist, Christopher Nuttall, Mike Sheffield, David Sherman, Thoman Deprima, B.V. Larson, Ilona Andrews, Marcus Twyman, Kennedy Hunter, etc....But as I have devoured all their publications I continue to search for the next prolific author. Ryk Brown is not yet to their quality, yet, but he has potential.

These books are fast paced, escapism. Do not attempt to read into the novels; they are what they are, simple entertainment. Like the comic books of your childhood you can empathize with the sizzle and boom, while not questioning the underlying assumptions too hard.

The newly created captain must fight an evil empire. In this case the added complexity is to fight one in the isolated fringe of the galaxy, then the requirement to return and single handed save the Earth from another. Only his ship and his crew has the miraculous jump drive which gives him the maneuverability to overcome frightful odds. Like Star Trek it is also a good thing all the aliens are humanoid and their language can be readily translated into english.

So don't look for a deep philosophical novel and don't expect to find reading the first novel in a vacuum to be at all satisfying. If however you can gulp down all six of the first novels (and they are not very thick) you will feel more satisfied. These books are not a gourmet literary repast, instead approaching a McDonald burger, very adequate and filling, but not immensely memorable.

Frontiers Saga is an epic journey and I can't wait to read the rest.
By Michael Edwards
So far I have read all 6 episodes and each one has kept me wanting more, and this story is just getting started. They still have to save Earth! If you like Space Opera then you will love this series.

Excellent resource on deception!
By Mark
I recently assumed a more senior managerial position in a company I work for and this book has provided a wealth of useful information. This read will facilitate your perspective with others you "just" meet and in professional circles. If I read this book 30 years earlier in life, it could have made a huge difference in my life. This book by far simplifies deception detection and provides excellent examples. This is a must read for anyone interested in detecting deception.

Liars beware
By yvonne knight
This is a great easy to understand resource about how lies are committed. The great thing about this book is you don't have to understand psychology to understand this book. I wish I had this book when my lying ex-boyfriend was around.

Short, to the point, useful information on outing liars
By Chuck P.
A few years ago I belonged to the Local Business Network in Michigan and a nationally recognized face reading expert was also a member. Through her I learned much of the basics of face reading. Then the hit TV show 'Lie to Me' came on and popularized the idea of discovering liars by their body & face language. Face reading is a great and mostly reliable way of outing liars, except for one problem. I'm not a visual person.

There are a great many things that I am good or even excellent at. But my skills are very numbers oriented or expressed through the printed word. I have no fashion sense, sense of colors, or a musical ear, so reading body language, to me, is relatively difficult. The fleeting expressions a person can make are more likely to pass me by than a person more visually oriented. So for me, the whole body language phenomenon was largely useless. I simply didn't have the skill necessary to use them. Plus, it takes a lengthy period of time to learn body language, even if you do have an aptitude for it.

This book IS NOT body language. It is entirely focused on the spoken and written words a person uses and the tell-tale signs that a person is lying. When a person lies they don't just betray themselves by body language, they out themselves by what they say too. This type of information is much more useful to me. I get words, both written and spoken, in a way that I will never get body language.

The author gives numerous examples on how words betray a liar. Also provided are some strategies to box a liar in and force an answer that may also reveal their lies. The information provided is sufficient enough to get a high level of basic skill in detecting liars through their words, but it isn't so much to learn that you feel overwhelmed. If you're the type of person that is more comfortable with words, then this book is better for you to help in discovering the liars in you life.

The Joy of PHP: A Beginner's Guide to Programming Interactive Web Applications with PHP and mySQL, by Alan Forbes

How to program interactive web applications with PHP and mySQL-- even if you've never programmed before
Have you ever wanted to design your own website or browser application but thought it would be too difficult or maybe just didn't know where to start? Have you found the amount of information on the Internet either too daunting or not geared for your skill set or worse-- just plain boring? Are you interested in learning to program PHP and have some fun along the way? If so, then The Joy of PHP by Alan Forbes is the book for you!!

PHP Beginners: Start Here
Alan starts with some basic HTML so the absolute beginner can catch up quickly and then goes step by step on how PHP works. You start with the easy stuff--like how to create and run simple PHP scripts that modify web pages-- and then build on what you've learned through a series of cohesive (and fun) exercises that carry over from lesson to lesson.

As the chapters progress you begin to build a web site for a growing used car dealership business. This approach keeps the material fun and challenging-- and gives what you've learned a context to be relevant. A car dealership needs a constantly changing web site because the inventory of cars is always changing. HTML is not the answer for this kind of web site-- but PHP and mySQL are the answer

Throughout the book you will be working with the web site for the car dealership and adding features and modifying it as the needs of the business (and your knowledge) grow. This writing style reinforces the previous lessons and keeps you engaged in a "real" project -- giving you both a sense of accomplishment and an opportunity to apply what you've learned to a realistic scenario. You are far more likely to retain what you've learned using this approach than just reading dry syntax documentation.

The author has an easy and fun style of writing that teaches you PHP in a simple, matter of fact manner while showing you the most common uses of the commands you need to get the job done. This keeps your learning pace quick and uncluttered. If you need it, he also points you to several resources where you can learn more about the other options a PHP function can offer and-- even better--how to read and understand those resources.

If you want to learn the PHP language in an easy, enjoyable, well laid out manner and to learn why PHP and mySQL are so powerful and fun to use then buy this book!! Do not buy this book if you are looking for a comprehensive reference of boring PHP syntax.

This book does not attempt to cover everything about PHP. What it does do-- and does well-- is take you from being a beginner who isn't even sure what PHP is to someone who knows the sheer joy that only programming dynamic sites can provide. You will become someone who can read, write, and modify PHP scripts and you will be able make your website come alive.

Such a great book!
By Min Kim
At the first time, I was unsure about how useful this book would be.
I have been reading this book on my kindle about a month and I just found that this book made me learn a lot from reading it.
I would like to recommend this book for all the beginners for php and other web-developing purpose. As a non english speaker, I thought that it could be hard to learn from english written books but this book has very easy explanation and also pictures at proper timings,
I strongly recommend you to start learning php with this book. :-) Thank you Alan!

Inspiring and practical overview
By Amazon Customer
This book was a great match to my needs. I knew a good amount about html, css, and javascript but there were things I wanted to do beyond the client side, like understand how a database connects to a website. The book contains numerous, short code samples that actually do things and I've already reused some of them to understand (firewall, etc) quirks of my own environment. I very much like that I now have working code samples which perform key operations; that's why I said the book offers a _practical_ overview.
I felt the book is _inspiring_ because, for the effort of reading a relatively small book, I now feel empowered to launch into my own designs - and I have those working code samples to prove or disprove an approach.
Returning to _practical_, the book describes in sufficient detail how to obtain and use public domain tools, tips on debugging, where to get further info and forum help. The suggested tool set comes in "wampserver" but the book also describes the debug facilities embedded in typical browsers. I like, too, that the author has made himself very accessible and has emailed to his registered readers a video on using various tools.
This book works very well on my Kindle.
BTW, I purchased a larger book to serve as a PHP reference and I'm happy in retrospect that I didn't use it as an introduction to PHP.

I wrote my own site with this book in 7 days. I also got PAID for it.
By Randy L. Miller
Using this book I changed 8 of my sites into PHP sites and created my very first MySQL DB. In response to another poor post I saw here I might add that AT THE AUTHOR'S SUGGESTION IN THE BOOK, I added the code to protect against SQL injection. I had some issues with a little of the code and actually had to change POST to GET in order to accomplish my needs. I went online for a search and I was surprised (although with all the self-righteous programmers who are clearly better than me, just ask them, I shouldn't have been) how often a newbie would ask for help with a snippet of code and several users would pounce on them about 1. RTFM n00b and 2. Your code is unsecure, protect from injections or the world will end!!!

Here the author shows us how to code with the bare minimum, then after we understand it, he shows the risks and what needs to be done to protect the code we have written.

Good Job Alan. Keep writing.

Zane Atraeus Dates Good-time Girl….

The tabloid headline halted billionaire banker and entrepreneur Gabriel Messena in his tracks.

A subtle tension gripped him as he paid the attendant at the Auckland International Airport newsstand and flipped the scandal sheet open to verify just which good-time girl, exactly, his wild cousin Zane Atraeus had been dating this time.

His gaze was drawn to the color photo that went with the story. Every muscle in his body tightened as he studied familiar Titian hair, creamy skin and dark eyes; a long, sensually curved body that possessed the engaging grace of a dancer.

Not just any woman, Gabriel thought with a bleak sense of inevitability as he studied the cheerful glint of Gemma O'Neill's gaze. Once again, Zane was dating his woman.

Emotion, sharp and clarifying, clenched his stomach muscles and banded his chest. When he had first discovered that Zane was dating Gemma, he had checked out the situation and had been satisfied that the dating was on a strictly business level. Although, according to the tabloid, at some point that had changed.

The attraction Zane felt for Gemma was a no-brainer. She was gorgeous and smart, with an impulsive nature and a fascinating bluntness that had captivated Gabriel when she had worked on the Messena estate as a gardener. Although, he couldn't understand what drew Gemma, who had never seemed to be the A-list party-girl type, to his younger, wilder cousin.

Jaw taut, he examined the fierce sense of possession that gripped him, the powerful desire to claim Gemma as his own, despite the fact that he hadn't seen her in almost six years. His growing fury that Zane, who had women lining up—and, apparently, enough time in his schedule to date them all—just couldn't seem to leave his former personal assistant alone.

Damn, he thought mildly. He had no problem identifying the emotion that held him in thrall, destroying his normal clarity. He was jealous of Zane: searingly, primitively jealous.

It was an emotion that made no sense given the length of time that had passed and the fact that what he and Gemma had shared had been nothing more than a steamy encounter that had spanned a few incandescent hours.

Hours that were still etched in his memory because they were literally the last fling of his carefree youth. Two days later his father had been killed in a car accident along with his mistress, the beautiful Katherine Lyon, a woman who had also happened to be the family housekeeper.

Amidst the grief and the scandal, the responsibility of managing the family bank, his volatile family and the media had descended on Gabriel's shoulders like a lead weight. Any idea that he should echo his father's disastrous mistake by continuing a liaison with an employee, no matter how attractive, had been shelved. Until now.

Frowning at the sudden sharp desire to pick up the threads of a relationship that had its basis in the same kind of obsessive fatal attraction that had brought his father to ruin, Gabriel refolded the paper.

Strolling to the first-class counter, he checked his luggage and handed his passport to the attendant. While he waited for his boarding pass, he glanced again at the sketchy article, which also chronicled a number of Zane's fiery liaisons. Affairs that Zane had apparently been conducting with other women while he had kept Gemma on the back burner.

Intense irritation gripped him at the idea that Gemma had clearly thrown away her pride and reputation in favor of pursuing Zane. That she would allow herself to be treated as some kind of standby date. It just didn't gel with the strong streak of independence that had always been such an attractive part of her personality.

His gaze snagged on a phrase that made every muscle lock tight. Suddenly, the anomaly in Gemma's behavior was crystal-clear.

She was no longer strictly single. At some point in the past couple of years, she'd had a child. Presumably, Zane's child.

Taking a measured breath, Gabriel forced the humming tension from his muscles, although there was nothing he could do about the slam of his heart, or the curious hollow feeling as he grappled with the information.

Too late to wish that he had listened to what the tabloids had been blaring for almost two years. That at some point, Zane had decided that having Gemma as his PA had not been enough, that he had installed her in his bed, as well.

He jerked at his dark blue silk tie, needing air. He needed to refocus, to reassert the control he'd worked so hard to instill in himself in place of the hot-blooded, passionate streak that was the bane of all Messena men. But something about the sheer intimacy of Gemma bearing a child cut deep. The fact that the child belonged to Zane, his own cousin, rubbed salt in the wound.

It was an intimacy that Gabriel, at age thirty, hadn't had time for in his life, and which was not in his foreseeable future.

But Zane, with all the irresponsibility of youth, had experienced that intimacy. And now, evidently, he no longer wanted the woman whom he had bound to him with a child.

But Gabriel did.

The thought dropped through the turmoil of his emotions like a stone dropping through cool, clear water.

Six years had passed. But in that moment the stretch of time barely registered. He felt like a sleeper waking up, all of his senses—the emotions he'd walked away from the night his father had died—flaring to intense, heated life.

He studied the photograph again, this time noting the way Gemma clung to Zane's arm, the relaxed intimacy of the pose.

A hot jolt of fury cleared away any reservations he might have had about claiming the woman he had walked away from in order to preserve his family and business.

Gemma had had a child. A baby.

Logic didn't alter his sense of disorientation, the disbelief that the pressures of business and his high-maintenance family had somehow blinded him and he had missed some-thing…important.

Although the fact that he hadn't registered changes in Gemma's life shouldn't surprise him. Running an empire encumbered by an aging trustee who Gabriel now believed to be suffering from the early stages of dementia, in theory he didn't have time to sleep.

And he almost never had time for personal relationships. When he dated it was invariably for business or charity functions. The fact that he went home to an empty apartment every night he wasn't traveling hadn't bothered him.

Until now.

Taking his boarding pass with automatic thanks, he strolled through the busy airport, barely noticing the travelers jostling around him. In the midst of a crowd, it was an odd time to feel alone. An even odder time to examine the stark truth, that despite the constant demands on his time, his own personal life was as sterile and empty as a desert.

But that was about to change. He was on his way to the Mediterranean island of Medinos, the ancestral home of the Messena family. And the place where Gemma just happened to presently reside.

If he had a mystical streak, he would be tempted to say that the coincidence that he and Gemma would finally be together at the same location was kismet. But mysticism had never figured in the Messena psyche. Aside from the passionate streak, Messena men had another well-defined trait that went clear back to the Crusades. Ruthless and tactical, fighting for the Couer de Lion, Richard the Li-onheart, they had flourished in battle, winning lands and fortresses. The habit of winning had been passed down a family line rich in sons, culminating in large holdings of land and enormous wealth.

Plundering was no longer in vogue. These days, Messena men usually leveraged what they wanted across boardroom tables, but the basic principle was still the same. Identify the objective, execute a plan, obtain the prize.

In this case the plan was simple: remove Gemma from Zane's clutches and install her back in his bed.

"Gabriel Messena…engaged before the month was out…"

The snatch of conversation flowing in off the sun-washed terrace of one of the Atraeus Resort's most luxurious suites stopped Gemma O'Neill in her tracks.

Her grip tightened on the tea tray she was carrying as fragments of the past surfaced like pieces of flotsam, taking her places that for six years she had refused to go, making her feel emotions she was usually very successful at avoiding.

A still bay, a clear midnight sky, studded with stars and pierced by a sickle moon. Gabriel Messena, his long, muscular body entwined with hers; hair dark as night, the cut of his cheekbones spare andfaintly exotic, reminding her of crowded souks and the inky shadowed alcoves of Moorish palaces…

With an effort of will Gemma blinked away the too-vivid image, which was probably a result of being on Medinos, the kind of romantic destination that attracted newlyweds in droves.

Now, rattled instead of being simply on edge as she'd been before, she brought the trolley to a halt beside the dining table. The clatter attracted the attention of the two guests she had been tasked with settling in. They were VIPs in the most important sense of the word on Medinos, because they were close connections of the Atraeus family.

Although, in terms of Gemma's past, one of the guests was much more than that, even if Luisa Messena, Gabriel's mother, didn't seem to have a clue that the person serving afternoon tea and petit-fours was one of her ex-gardeners. And her son's ex-lover.

Pasting a professional smile on her mouth, Gemma apologized, all the while keeping her face averted in the hope that she could hang on to her anonymity.

With crisp movements, she snapped a damask cloth open, settled it on the glossy little table then began the precision task of aligning plates and napkins. As she offloaded a carved silver teapot that was probably worth more than the car she needed to buy but as a single mother just couldn't afford, she fiercely wished she hadn't offered to give the hotel staff a hand with the influx of VIP guests.

"He's certainly waited for her long enough…she's perfect…. The family's wealthy, of course…"

Despite the fact that she was doing her level best not to listen, because as far as she was concerned Gabriel Messena was old history, Gemma's jaw locked on a surge of annoyance. Clearly Gabriel was on the point of proposing to some perfect preselected creature, probably a beautiful debutante who had been groomed and educated within an inch of her life and who was now finally ready for the wedding nuptials.

She ripped the tab off a bottle of chilled sparkling mineral water and tossed it in the little trash can on the bottom shelf of her trolley. A tinkling sound indicated that the tab had bounced off the side of the trash can and rolled onto the floor. Retrieving the tab, she placed it in the trash can with careful precision and poured mineral water into two glasses. Her jaw tightened as some sloshed over the side and soaked into her trolley cloth.

The knowledge that Gabriel was finally getting around to marriage after years of bachelorhood in the hushed stratosphere of enormous wealth in which he moved shouldn't have impacted her. She was happy for Gabriel. Perfectly, sublimely happy. She would have to remember to send him a congratulatory card.

She could do that, because she had moved on.

The conversation out on the terrace had segued from Gabriel to the more innocuous topic of shopping, which was a relief. Gemma guessed she couldn't hope to feel a complete absence of emotion about Gabriel, because as a teenager, he had been her focus; the man of her dreams. She had fallen in puppy love with him, and had mooned after him for years. Unfortunately she had been wasting her time because she hadn't had either the wealth or the family connections to be a viable part of his world.

One night, Gabriel had quenched the flare of passion that had bound them together as systematically as she imagined he would have vetoed an investment that lacked the required substance. He'd been polite, but he had made it clear they didn't have a future. He hadn't elaborated in any detail; he hadn't needed to. After the scandal that had hit the papers shortly after the one night they had spent together, Gemma had understood exactly why he had dropped her like the proverbial hot potato.

His father's affair with the family housekeeper had shaken the very foundations of the family banking business, which was based on wealthy clientele who were old-school and conservative. Gabriel had been in damage control mode. He hadn't wanted to inflame the scandal and undermine confidence in the bank any further by risking having his liaison with the gardener exposed to tabloid scrutiny.

Despite her heartache, Gemma had tried to see things from his perspective, to understand the battle he had faced. But the rejection, the knowledge that she had not been good enough to have a real, public relationship with Gabriel, had hurt in a way that had struck deep.

As soon as Gabriel had left after the short, awkward interview in which she had managed to remain superficially upbeat, she resolved to never look back or to even remember. It had been the emotional equivalent of sticking her head in the sand, but over the past six years, the tactic had worked.

Gemma took extra care transferring the bone china from the trolley to the table. Even so, an exquisitely delicate cup overturned on its saucer and a silver teaspoon that had been balanced on the saucer skidded off and hit a pretty bread and butter plate with a sharp ping.

She could feel the subtle tension and displeasure at the noise she was making. Her jaw set a fraction tighter. She had worked for the Atraeus Group for some years and normally didn't mind in the least helping out with any task that needed doing. The Atraeus family had given her a job when she desperately needed one, and they had treated her very well, but suddenly she was acutely aware of her role as a servant.

She dumped a glistening silver milk jug and sugar bowl down next to the teapot and swiped at an errant droplet of milk that marred the once pristine tablecloth.

Not that she had an issue with doing a good job, but it was a fact that she wasn't waitstaff. Just like she was no longer the gardener's daughter on the Messena estate.

She was a highly organized and well-qualified PA with a degree in performing arts on the side, and she was still trying to come to grips with the fact that by some errant trick of fate, she had ended up once more in the role of employee to a Messena.

Serene and perfectly groomed, Luisa looked exactly as she had when Gemma had last seen her in Dolphin Bay, New Zealand. The friend accompanying her, though casually dressed, looked just as wealthy and well-groomed; her dark hair smooth, nails perfect. Unlike Gemma's hair, which she'd been too tired after a near-sleepless night on the phone to New Zealand to do anything with except to coil the heavy waves into a knot.

As she placed the crowning glory of the afternoon tea setting, an exquisite three-tiered plate of tiny cakes, scones, pastries and mini sandwiches, in the center of the table, she caught a glimpse of herself in a wall mirror.

She wasn't surprised that Luisa hadn't recognized her. The housemaid's smock she was wearing was at least a size too large and an unflattering pale blue, which leached all the color from her skin. With her hair pulled back into a severe knot, she didn't look either pretty or stylish.

Definitely not the gorgeous hothouse flower who by all accounts had been reserved for marriage to Gabriel, despite the fact that Gemma had borne his child.

The thought was overdramatic and innapropriate, and she regretted it the moment it was out.

Ok
By Foxy
I have typically enjoyed Fiona' s books. I have also read the series. This one was not good. It tried to tie into the last book which she should not have done. There was too much discussion of both H&H in their heads. Dull and dragging in the middle. They only slept together one night and six years later they were in love and ready to marry with minimal discussion? I know they had a child from the one night stand but it just concerned me. Save your money.

Bored to tears
By Baby Ohno
I agree with boopt's description of this book. I did read the last 3 in the series and found them ok but this one I'm not sure I will finish. I'm only on page 63 and all I've heard is how they can't get each other out of their thoughts after spending one night together, and incidentially, producing a baby he doesn't know about. Together with the repeat information on how the country/kingdom? is run and has been run for centuries has bored me to tears. I'm not happy with this reading at all. I just read another two chapters and have decided it is not worth my time in finishing. It is sooo boring I had to put it away and go on to another more interesting and hopefully rewarding read.
