Three-foot Matchmaker

Ginny Scarborough has picked out her new mommy— Danni Everett, the local celebrity chef who hired Ginny's widowed father, Stone, to renovate her house. And Danni couldn't deny the immediate zing she felt for the handsome, green-eyed contractor…even if they were brought together by a precocious four-year-old. So why was Stone holding back when everything between them felt so right?

Stone's heart had been, well, stone-cold for far too long…that is, until he met the beautiful and bubbly chef. Still, Danni was part of a world where Stone and his little girl didn't belong—better to move on than risk the pain of losing love again.

With two stubborn adults to contend with, could little Cupid still make her dreams of a family come true?

Stone Scarborough stared at his younger sister, trying to make sense out of what she had, rather breathlessly, just told him.

Whatever it was, Virginia seemed very animated about it and he'd managed to glean that it had something to do with the business card she had just pressed into his hand. But her narrative came out so disjointed he found himself feeling the way he had back in the days when he'd walk into the middle of a movie with his late wife—Eva never managed to be on time for anything no matter how hard she tried—and he was forced to try to make heads or tails out of what he was subsequently watching.

In addition to Virginia's overwhelming flow of words, his daughter, Ginny, seemed to have caught the fever and was fairly bouncing up and down right in front of him. It was as if both were experiencing a massive sugar attack.

In an attempt to sort out the verbiage, Stone held his hand up to get Virginia to stop talking for a moment, regroup and begin at the beginning.

"Run this by me one more time," Stone urged his sister. "From the top," he added.

His sister Virginia shook her head, her light blond ponytail swishing from side to side. "You know, for a brilliant man, you can be so slow sometimes."

"Must be in comparison to the company I keep," he said drolly. If he practiced for a year, he'd never be able to talk as fast as his sister—or his daughter. "Humor me," he instructed, looking down at the card in his hand. "Why am I calling this woman?"

Taking a breath, Virginia recited the facts. "The number belongs to Maizie Sommers. She's a Realtor who owns her own company. She said she needs the name of a good general contractor to recommend to her clients."

He had never believed in coincidences or good fortune without there being strings of some sort, no matter how invisible, attached.

Consequently, Stone regarded the card in his hand with more than a smattering of suspicion. "And she just walked up to you and said, 'Hmm, you look like you probably know a good general contractor,' as she handed her card to you?"

"No."

Virginia closed her eyes, doing her best to get herself under control. She knew she'd gotten too excited, but the picture that Maizie Sommers had painted for her earlier today had filled her with hope. It had been a very long time since she'd seen her brother with more than an obligatory smile on his lips.

And, like her niece, she really didn't care for the woman he was currently seeing. Try as she might, she couldn't get herself to warm up to Elizabeth Wells—and she definitely didn't see the woman as being Gin-ny's stepmother. For one thing, the woman was not the patient sort.

"Okay, from the top," Virginia announced. "And this time," she told her brother, "try to pay attention, all right?"

"Yes, ma'am," Stone replied, executing a mock salute and doing his best to be patient.

Stone had just been on the receiving end of disappointing news. The owners of a house he was scheduled to begin work on had just changed their minds and canceled the project on him. That didn't exactly put him in the best of moods.

He didn't have time to waste like this. There were cages he needed to rattle in order to replace the work he'd lost. But Virginia had gotten right in his face and insisted that he listen to her.

"Well?" Stone prodded.

Virginia took a deep breath. She decided that she would stay as close to the truth as possible without coming right out and telling her brother that he was being set up—not to take a fall, but to fall in love. If he even suspected that, he would never agree to any of this. And he needed to agree because, at the very least, he would wind up earning some money doing what he did best these days—working with his hands.

Five years ago, he'd been an aerospace engineer. But that industry was all but dead in Southern California, so he had fallen back on what he'd done while working his way through college. He'd worked in construction.

But now that was on shaky grounds. The economy had taken a bite out of everyone's livelihood and his line of work was seeing a definite downturn. Remodeling was a luxury people felt they could put off until later without any major consequences. Virginia was confident that her brother wouldn't turn down work.

She just had to sell him on how this had all come about.

"Okay, from the top," Virginia said, echoing his words, then started with her narrative. "I took Ginny out for some ice cream."

Stone looked a wee bit exasperated. "Just what she needs, more sugar." He loved his daughter more than life itself, but there were times when getting her to behave was a challenge—one that wore him out. Stone slanted a glance toward his only child. Ginny had been in constant motion since she and Virginia had walked in. "Is that why she's bouncing five inches off the ground?" he asked.

"You're interrupting," Virginia accused, frowning at him.

He suppressed a sigh and waved his sister on. "Sorry, continue."

"Anyway, we went to that old-fashioned ice cream parlor at the Brubaker Mall, and I got her an ice cream cone. They had so many wonderful flavors to choose from, I couldn't resist so I decided that I'd get one, too—it's been a while since I just indulged in a treat," she explained by way of a sidebar.

"The point, Virginia, Get to the point," Stone directed. Ever since they were children, the shortest distance between two points for Virginia had never once been a straight line; it always wound up being an elaborate journey—a very pronounced squiggly line if he didn't adamantly put his foot down about it.

"Okay. While I was getting myself a cone, Ginny decided to go exploring—" Catching her lower lip between her teeth, Virginia slanted a side glance in her brother's direction. She was waiting to get the inevitable explosion out of the way.

Stone was looking sharply at his daughter. "Ginny, you know better than to go running off like that."

Rather than protest, Ginny surprised him by looking down contritely at her shoes and murmuring, "Yes, Daddy."

It wasn't that his only child was willful. She was just extremely exuberant and given to incredibly energetic enthusiasm. This apparent remorse, however, was a whole different side of her he'd never seen before.

Had something put the fear of consequences into his little girl?

Concerned, Stone glanced back at his sister for a further explanation.

Virginia instantly obliged. "I caught up with Ginny just next door. She'd wandered into a real estate office," she told him.

Stone could only stare at his sister. Ginny in a toy store he could understand, but what could have possibly attracted his precocious child to walk into a real estate office?

"Why?" he asked, looking from Ginny to his sister and then back again, waiting for one of them to give him a satisfactory answer.

Virginia was at a loss as to how to explain this part and was about to say she had no idea why Ginny did half the things she did when Ginny suddenly said, "I heard you say that you didn't know if you could find enough work to pay the bills, so I asked the lady if any of the houses in the pictures needed fixing—'cause you could do it."

Virginia was as stunned as her brother with her niece's creative explanation. It took her a beat to pick up the lifeline that had just been thrown her way.

"As it turned out, she did," Virginia confirmed belatedly. "Your daughter charmed her," Virginia said, putting her arm around Ginny's small shoulders, "and instead ofjust ushering us out, the woman said that as a matter of fact, she was currently looking for a good general contractor for her reference file. Naturally, Ginny and I told her you were the best, so she gave me her card and said that you should call her when you had the time."

It sounded like a fairy tale, but in there somewhere Stone assumed was the truth, otherwise, why had the woman given his sister her card? And, since he suddenly found himself unexpectedly free, what did he have to lose by calling?

"Well," Stone said slowly, looking the card over again,

"I could always use another contact but.." He glanced at his daughter, concerned and reading his own interpretation into what she'd just said. "Honey, we're going to be just fine," he assured her. "I don't want you worrying about things like bills for a long time to come. I'll take care of us," he promised.

"Yes, Daddy." Ginny smiled at him. It was the same smile he'd seen on her mother's face, Stone thought with a pang. A smile he missed seeing. "I just wanted to help," she told him.

"You do, honey, just by being you, you do," Stone assured her. He regarded the card again. No time like the present, he decided. "Okay, let's see what this Maizie Sommers has to say."

Ginny crossed her index finger and middle finger on both hands and held them up for him to see as he took out his cell phone.

We've got a great little girl, Eva. God but I wish you were here to see her, Stone couldn't help thinking as he called the number on the card.

He had no way of knowing that his daughter wasn't crossing her fingers because she was hoping he'd wind up with a job. Ginny was hoping that the "nice lady at the agency" would do for her father what she'd already done for Greg's father and that was to find her father someone who would be her new mommy.

Stone returned his daughter's hopeful smile as he heard the phone ringing on the other end.

It rang a total of two times and then he could hear the other end pick up. A sunny voice was saying, "This is Maizie Sommers, how can I help you?"

Stone turned away from his daughter and his sister, focusing his attention on the person on the other end of the call.

"Ms. Sommers, this is Stone Scarborough—" He got no further than that.

"Ah, yes," Maizie said warmly, "the general contractor. I've been waiting for your call."

Her admission caught him off guard. "You have?" Was business on her end bad, too? And if so, then what sort of work could she possibly have for him? Still, he'd called so he might as well see where this actually wound up leading.

"Absolutely," she replied. "Are you by any chance available tonight?"

"Tonight?" he echoed, wondering if he'd just made a big mistake.

Something didn't seem right. Maybe this woman wasn't looking for a general contractor but for something else entirely. Granted this Maizie Sommers didn't sound as eager and excited as Virginia had when she'd told him about this, but the woman was incredibly cheerful. Too cheerful to be talking strictly about work.

Several possibilities ran through his head, but he tamped them down until he had more to go on. No point in thinking the worst—yet.

"Yes. Or if that's too short a notice for you, then perhaps tomorrow evening might be better for you."

She kept specifying evenings, which made it sound way too much like making arrangements for a date. "Why not in the daytime?" he asked suspiciously.

The woman took the question in stride, making it sound as if she was already prepared for it. Maybe he was being too suspicious, Stone told himself.

"I'm afraid the woman I'm giving your name to isn't available during the daytime," Maizie told him. "At least, not until the weekend. She's busy taping her program during the day," Maizie explained.

"Her program?" Stone repeated, confused.

This was a lot like talking to Virginia, he thought, wondering if vague obscurity was a gender thing or if he was just slow, the way Virginia had accused him of being. Either way, he was in need of either a further ex-planation—or subtitles.

"Yes, she has a daily cooking show broadcast on a cable network and right now, her weekdays are taken up taping the program before a studio audience. When she first came out here and signed her contract," Maizie continued proudly, "I sold her this lovely house. That was about six months ago.

"I got her a really good deal on the house, but that was because the owner was in a hurry to sell. The house needed a lot of work and it was sold as is. She didn't have the time then, or, I suspect, the money, for repairs. The poor dear was just starting out. But the program's doing really well and she feels that she can finally afford to have the house fixed up the way she'd like." Mai-zie paused for a moment, letting that all sink in before she asked him, "Are you interested, Mr. Scarborough?"

It was work. He was more than interested. "Yes, of course I am." But he had a question of his own. "Don't you want to see some of my work before you refer me to someone?"

She liked the fact that he was cautious and that he wasn't trying to rush her into any sort of an agreement. For her part, she had already researched his background and had seen all she needed to. Virginia Scarborough had shown her a photograph of her brother and given her enough background information to get her started in the right direction.

She felt she had the perfect match for Ginny's father. Matches usually didn't present themselves this quickly. They ordinarily took a little time. However, this time she'd thought of Danni almost immediately.

That, to her, was a very good sign.

"Your sister and daughter speak quite highly of you, Mr. Scarborough."

"And that's enough?" he asked rather skeptically.

"Yes," Maizie told him with feeling, and then added with a slight chuckle, "of course, what I saw on your webpage didn't exactly hurt, either."

"My webpage?" Stone echoed, confused. He turned to look quizzically at his sister as he said it. This was all news to him.

"Yes, your sister very kindly gave me the URL address. I must say it was very impressive, Mr. Scarborough," Maizie said warmly. "If my house was in need of work, I would hire you in a minute."

He supposed that was good news, but he was still a little confused. "Thanks," he murmured belatedly.

Poor man was probably still trying to figure out what hit him, Maizie thought, amused.

"So, do I have your permission to pass your name on to my client?" she asked. Maizie had learned that it never paid to appear to take things for granted. People liked the illusion of being in charge of their own fate—even when they weren't.

"Yes, of course," Stone said with feeling. If this was on the level—and it was beginning to sound that way—he definitely wanted the work. He made a point of never turning anything down.

"Wonderful," Maizie said, enthused. "I'm sure you'll be hearing from her shortly," she promised. "Just so you know, her name is Danni Everett."

"Danni Everett," he repeated.

Wish Upon a Matchmaker (Matchmaking Mamas) by Marie Ferrarella

This was my first book by Marie Ferrarella, and I have to say I really enjoyed it.
Little Ginny Scarborough, walks into the local realtors office and asks Maizie Sommers "Are you the lady who finds mommies" And so starts the matchmaking. You see Maizie helped Greg a friend of little Ginny's find a new Mommy. So now she is hoping to have a mommy too. She doesn't remember her own mother who passed away when she was a baby. When Virginia "Ginny's Aunt" finds her she sets down with Maizie and Ginny and so starts the story.

Soon we have Stone Scarborough being put in touch with Danni Everett who just so happens to need extensive renovations done to her older fixer upper. Neither is aware that there is a threesome working behind the scenes to bring them together.

Stone Scarborough has been barely holding together what is left of his life since losing his wife four years ago. He had been and aerospace engineer but the industry is no longer what it used to be so, he has fallen back on his construction background and barely making ends meet. So he is happy to go see about a possible new job that will bring in much needed income. While he is currently dating Elizabeth he has to admit there are some issues starting to show in their relationship.

Danni Everett is a celebrity chef with her own cooking show on television. Danni is as sweet and bubbly as they come, a true southern belle from the state of Georgia. She is now in a position to have work done on the fixer upper she bought. Some would take a look at her and think she doesn't have a care in the world. But as we all know looks can and often are deceiving. She lost her father a couple of years ago and still misses him.

The two main characters were both well written. And the book had a nice flow to it. I really enjoyed Marie's writing style and the idea behind the plot. She also writes with little or no errors to her writing, which I really enjoy. I must say I also loved little Ginny Scarborough's character in the book also. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

(Matchmaking Mamas)

This is the first book of the series that I have read. It is charming. Ginny wants a mommy and she heard from a friend that the real estate lady finds them. Ginny convinces her Aunt to take her to get ice cream and while she is in line Ginny takes off.
Ginny goes into the real estate office and asks Are you the lady who finds mommies? Ginny's friend had told her that she found him a mommy and they are now happy. Her Aunt comes in asking what are you doing taken off like that.

Ginny is a cute 4 year old. She doesn't remember her mother because she died when she was little. Ginny does not like her dad's girl friend now. Ginny is named after her Aunt Virginia. Ginny tells her Aunt that she came to find a new mommy.

Maizie told Virginia how she and some friends brought some people together and one of the couples son was Ginny's friend. Maizie invited them to have a drink and sit down. She thought she could help them.

Virginia told her brother that she gave the local real estate lady his card. She is looking for a good contracter to recommend to her clients. Stone was thinking why would she recommend him? Virginia admitted that the web page idea she actually went ahead and built it showing before and after pictures of the houses he worked on.

Danni Everett is ready now to fix up her house like she wants it. She just got her new cooking show picked up again. It was a big hit. She was able to pay off her debts and now can do what she wants. So when Maizie called Danni to recommend a contracter and gave her his information she called Stone. She admitted she liked his web site and could he meet her after work to walk through the house.

Stone first day to work on the house Virginia tells him that she can't baby sit Ginny today after all. When Stone calls to cancil the starting date because he did not have a babysitter. Danni said she could watch Ginny for him.

Danni and Ginny hit it off. They decided to bake a pie together while Stone was working. Then they made dinner so they all ate together. Ginny is cute and fast thinking matchmaker.

Their is a few love scenes towards the ending. Cute plot, like the characters, they are all doing their best in life.
I enjoy Marie Ferrarella's books.

I was given this ebook to read and asked to give honest review of it when I finshed by Netgalley.

4.5 Star Review
By Harlequin Junkie Blog
This book ended up being so much better than I anticipated! Wish Upon a Matchmaker by Marie Ferrarella is a great, feel good story. The book is extremely well written and flows effortlessly from beginning to end.

Wish Upon a Matchmaker is about Ginny, a precocious four year old girl that desperately wants a Mommy for her widowed father. She enlists the help of the local realtor, who is also known to be a successful and discreet matchmaker . Stone, Ginny's dad, is a general contractor that ends up renovating the home of Danni, a local celebrity chef. Both Stone and Danni are longing for love and happiness while working through past sadness.

The storyline was realistic and romantic. However, I found the premise of Stone renovating the house almost entirely by himself, without a crew, hard to believe. On the emotional side, the author brought tears to my eyes when Danni spoke about the sadness in her life.

I will definitely read another book from Marie Ferrarella.

Someone followed her.

Someone she  couldn’t see or hear through any normal means, but whose presence vibrated across her psychic senses.

Someone whose mission was death.

The wind stirred, running chill fingers across the nape of her neck. Nikki shivered and eyed the surrounding shadows uneasily. She’d never been afraid of the dark before--had, in fact, found it something of an ally, especially in the wilder days of her youth. But tonight there was an edge to the silence, a hint of menace in the slowly swirling fog.

People disappeared on nights like this. At least, they did here in Lyndhurst.

She returned her gaze to the slender figure just ahead. This was the second night in a row Monica Trevgard had come to the park after midnight, and if the teenager had a reason for doing so, Nikki sure as hell hadn’t found any evidence of it. Her actions to date made very little sense. The only child of one of Lyndhurst’s--and possibly America’s--richest men, Monica had spent most of her life rebelling against her family and their wealth. And yet, ironically, it was only thanks to her father’s money that she was free to walk the streets tonight. Though nothing had ever been proven, it was generally acknowledged that John Trevgard had at least one judge and several police officers on his payroll.

Nikki smiled grimly. Trevgard would probably have been better off keeping his hand in his pocket and letting his only child spend some time in jail. Maybe a day or so locked behind uncompromising concrete walls would shock some sense into the girl.

It sure as hell had with her.

Shoving cold hands into the pockets of her old leather jacket, Nikki let her gaze roam across the fog-shrouded trees to her left.

He was still there, still following her, the man with darkness in his heart and murder on his mind. But not her murder, or even Monica’s. Someone else’s entirely.

She bit her lip. With two knives strapped to her wrists and her psychic abilities to fall back on, she was sufficiently protected. At least under normal circumstances. But the man out there in the darkness was far from normal, and something told her none of her weapons would be enough if he chose to attack.

Maybe she was as mad as Monica. Four women had already disappeared from this particular area. She should play it safe and go home, let Jake--her boss, and the man who’d become more of a father to her than her own damn father had ever been--take over the case. A teenager looking for trouble was going to find it, no matter how many people her father hired to follow and protect her.

Only, Jake had enough on his plate already, and his night-sight had started deteriorating since he’d hit the big four-0 several years ago.

The sound of running water broke through the heavy silence. Though the fog half hid the old fountain from sight, Nikki knew it well enough to describe every chipped detail, from the wickedly grinning cherub at the top to the embracing lovers near the bottom. It was amazing what became interesting when you had nothing else to do but watch a teenager watch the water.

Only, this time, Monica didn’t stop at the fountain. She didn’t even look at it. Instead, she glanced quickly over her shoulder--a casual move that raised the hairs on the back of Nikki’s neck.

Monica knew she was being followed. Tonight she was the bait to catch the watcher.

The bitter breeze stirred, seeming to blow right through Nikki’s soul. She swore softly and ran a hand through her hair. It was nights like this, when she was caught between common sense and past promises, that she really hated being psychic. She would have run a mile away from here had it not been for her gift, which warned that death would claim Monica’s soul if she wasn’t protected.

And because she couldn’t stand the weight of another death on her conscience, Nikki had no real choice but to follow.

They neared the far edge of the park. Streetlights glimmered--forlorn wisps of brightness barely visible through the trees and the fog--and Nikki’s discomfort surged. Monica wasn’t heading for the street or the lights, but rather toward the old mansion on the far side of the park. The place had a reputation for being haunted, and though she wasn’t particularly afraid of ghosts, the one night she’d spent there as a kid had sent her fleeing in terror. Not from the ghosts, but from the sense of evil that seemed to ooze from the walls.

Of course, it might have been nothing more than a combination of knowing that a family had once been murdered there, and an overactive imagination. But still . . .

Monica squeezed through a small gap in the fence and cast another quick look over her shoulder. There was no doubt about it, the kid definitely wanted to be followed.

Nikki stopped and watched her walk up the steps to the back door. Her common sense told her not to follow, and her psychic sense told her danger lurked inside. She clenched her fists. She could do this. She had to do this. For Monica’s sake.

Because if she didn’t, the teenager was doomed.

She stepped forward, then froze. No sound had disturbed the dark silence. Even the breeze had faded, and the fog sat still and heavy on the ground. Yet something had moved behind her. Something not quite human.

Throat dry, Nikki turned. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught a hint of movement--a hand, emerging from darkness, reaching out to touch her . . .

Yelping in fright, she jumped back and lashed out with a blast of kinetic energy. Something heavy hit a nearby oak, accompanied by a grunt of pain. She stared at the tree. Despite the sound, there was nothing--or nobody--at its base.

Yet something had to be there. It didn’t make any sense--bodies didn’t just disappear like that. She swallowed and ran trembling fingers through her hair. Disembodied hands couldn’t emerge from the darkness, either.

Had it simply been her imagination, finally reacting to the overwhelming sensation of being followed? No, something had been there. Was still there, even if she couldn’t see it.

Not that that made a whole lot of sense.

She turned and studied the dark house. Trouble waited inside. But so did Monica.

Ignoring her unknown watcher, Nikki climbed through the fence and ran across the shadowed yard. Edging up the steps, she slipped a small flashlight from her pocket and shone the light through the open doorway.

The entrance hall was small, laden with dust and cobwebs that shimmered like ice in the beam of light. Faded crimson and gold wallpaper hung in eerie strips from the walls, rustling lightly in the breeze that drifted past her legs. The house really hadn’t changed much in the ten years since she’d been here last--except for one thing. The creeping sense of evil felt a hell of a lot stronger now than it had before. In fact, it almost seemed alive. Alive and waiting.

She swallowed heavily and directed the flashlight’s beam toward the stairs. Motes of dust danced across the light, stirred to life in the wake of Monica’s passing. She’d gone up. Up to where the sense of evil felt the strongest.

Gripping the flashlight tightly, Nikki walked through the dust, toward the stairs. The air smelled of decay and unwashed bodies. Obviously, it was still a haunt for those forced to scratch a living from the streets. It was odd, though, that there was no one here now--no one but Monica and whoever it was she’d come here to meet.

A floorboard creaked beneath Nikki’s weight, the sound as loud as thunder in the silence. She winced and hesitated. After several heartbeats, someone moved on the floor above.

It wasn’t Monica. The footfalls were too heavy.

Reaching into her pocket, Nikki turned on her phone. If things started to go bad, she’d call for help. Trevgard might not like the publicity a call to the cops would bring, but if it meant the difference between life or death--her life or death--then he could go to hell.

The staircase loomed out of the shadows. Nikki shone the light upward. Something growled, a low noise almost lost under the thundering of her heart. She hesitated, staring up into the darkness. It had sounded like some sort of animal. But what animal made such an odd, rasping noise?

One hand on the banister, the other clutching the flashlight so tightly that her knuckles began to ache, she continued on. The growl cut across the silence again.

It was definitely not an animal.

She reached the landing and stopped. The odd-sounding snarl was much closer this time. Sweat trickled down her face and the flashlight flickered slightly, its beam fading, allowing the night to close in around her. Nikki swore and gave it a quick shake. The last thing she needed right now was for the light to give out. It flickered again, then became brighter.

She moved on but kept close to the wall, just in case. At least she could use it as a guide, even if the peeling remains of the wallpaper felt like dead skin against her fingertips.

The hallway ended in a T. Moonlight washed through the shattered window at the end of the left-hand corridor. On the right, the darkness was so complete that the flashlight barely penetrated it. And while she knew it was little more than a result of shuttered windows at that end of the hall, it still seemed oddly unnatural.

It wasn’t a place she wanted to go. Unfortunately, her psychic senses told her that Monica was down there somewhere. But that odd sound had come from the opposite side. Whatever it was, she had to check it out first. She wasn’t about to risk being attacked from behind in a place like this. So she turned left.

Two doors waited ahead--one open, one closed.

Was it fear or instinct that warned against entering either of the rooms?

The wind whispered forlornly through the shattered window at the end of the hall, accompanied by a low moan that raised goose bumps across her skin.

It was definitely more human than animal. And it wasn’t Monica. The teenager still waited in the darkness of the right-hand corridor. Nikki crept forward and peered around the door frame. The room was large, with a line of windows to the right, but the glass was so filthy it allowed little moonlight to filter through. She couldn’t immediately see anything waiting in the shadows, but something was in there. The sense of malevolence was so overwhelming she could barely breathe.

So why don’t you turn around and run?

The thought whispered into her brain, featherlight but hinting at anger. Nikki froze, fear squeezing her throat tight. Just for an instant, her mind linked with another. She tasted darkness and concern and the need to kill. This was the man she’d half seen near the fence, the man who’d followed her through the fog.

Turn around and leave. You cannot help the child now.

No. Why could she hear this man’s thoughts? Telepathy had never been one of her talents, even though she’d been able to receive Tommy’s thoughts well enough. And who the hell are you to tell me what to do?

I am merely trying to save your life. You will not like what you find here. Not in that room, and not with the teenager.

Yeah, right. Who was this person? A would-be prophet of doom? Hell, for all she knew, he might even be the source of the darkness she sensed waiting, even if her senses told her otherwise. I have never run from anything in my life, and I don’t intend to start now.

The lie gave her courage. She took a deep breath and stepped into the room.

Michael Kelly hit the fence in frustration. The little fool had gone in, despite his warning. Or perhaps because of it.

She knew that danger waited. He could taste the fear in her thoughts, despite the distance between them. So why wouldn’t she run? Why did she continue this fruitless pursuit? Given the strength of her psychic talents, she had to know the child was well beyond salvation.

He let his gaze roam to the far end of the house. Hidden by the darkness, evil waited for his next meal, ably served by his young companion. Unless he intervened, Nikki James would become the fifth woman to go missing.

Had it been anyone else, he wouldn’t have cared particularly--not given the identity of the man who hunted her, a man he’d long hunted himself. But he’d been sent here tonight to save a life rather than trap and kill a murderer, and as much as he might want to do the latter, he could not. But Nikki’s abilities added a dangerous dimension to his task. It was for those abilities, more than for her blood, that Jasper hunted her.

He turned and walked to the end of the fence. The sudden movement caused pain to shoot through his head, but he resisted the urge to rub the lump forming near his temple. He had deserved that--and more--for being so careless. But he hadn’t expected the fool to use her kinetic abilities against him. Why, he couldn’t say. He smiled grimly. Maybe senility was finally setting in.

He walked through the gate and headed for the garage. While he generally couldn’t enter private homes uninvited, that restriction didn’t apply to houses that had been long abandoned. He could go in unhindered, and do what he was sent here to do.

But Jasper was not in that house alone. Not only did he have the teenager at his command, but his living dead as well. Six against one were not the best of odds, even for someone like him. What Michael needed was a distraction. He slipped past the remains of the garage door and his gaze came to rest on an old gas can. He picked it up; liquid sloshed within.

Jasper hated fire. Feared it.

It might provide enough of a distraction to save Nikki James.

The room smelled awful--a putrid mix of stale urine, excrement and death. Nikki cupped a hand over her nose and mouth and tried not to gag as she swept the flashlight’s beam across the room.

Something slid away from the light--a hunched, humanoid shape that smelled like death.

Nikki backed away. She didn’t know what hid in the shadows and didn’t really care to find out. She’d learned long ago that there were some things best left unexplored, and she very much suspected this was one of those moments. Perhaps if she retreated and closed the door, whatever lurked in the room would leave her alone. She knew from past experience that all the doors in this old house creaked; it was one of the things that had spooked her as a teenager. At the very least, it would give her warning if the creature decided to move.

Kept the pages turning.

Where I do not think Dancing with the Devil can be put on the same shelf as Laurell K. Hamilton and Tanya Huff's Blood series, it was still very good. The action - where definitely not as graphic as Hamilton's books - kept you reading - unable to say "I'll read just one more chapter and put it down for the night". After reading the last sentence I was glad to see in the next paragraph that there will be a continuation of Niki and Michael's story coming in December. A lot of things were settled, but there were a lot of things left dangling. I am looking forward to continuing the story to find out what happens with Niki and Michael.

Jenni
By J. C. stickler
I am an avid reader, often 2 to 3 books per week and this book was less than entertaining. I stuck with it because I kept hoping it would get better. Romance, what romance? There was a kiss, a caress and then it was the next morning. The plot kept leaving me hanging. The main characters would be in some heavy situation against the enemy and the next thing you know it's the next day and their escape or an explanation never materialized. Very disappointing. I will not read the follow up!

An early Arthur...
By Cheryl M-M
This is a perfect example of how an author should and can evolve as a scribe.
This one of Keri Arthur's early works. It doesn't do justice to her talent and excellent way of spinning a paranormal tale. Her Full Moon Rising (Riley Jensen, Guardian, Book 1) (Riley Jenson Guardian)series is superb for example.
In this one the author is just cutting her teeth.
A lot of the scenes are a little predictable and tedious. There is no real connection to the characters, perhaps because they lack the depth to create empathy.
The main character has the annoying habit of running into situations, despite being warned and constantly plays the helpless female. So if you like your heroines strong and independent this one might be a tad disappointing.
I can only repeat that her later books are quite exceptional, so I would recommend not giving up entirely on this author if this book isn't quite up your alley.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley.

*Starred Review* Lady Belinda Featherstone might be the best matchmaker in England, but even she has her limits. When Nicholas, the Marquess of Trubridge, informs Belinda he is in the market for a wife, Belinda thinks he must be joking. When she discovers that Nicholas has been separated from his trust fund until he marries a suitable lady, she becomes infuriated. A notorious rake and heartless cad, Nicholas is cut from the same matrimonial cloth as her late husband, so if Nicholas thinks Belinda will help him find some poor, naive American heiress to wed, well, he is sadly mistaken. Using every trick in her matchmaking book, Belinda sets about scuttling Nicholas’ matrimonial plans only to find that the irresistibly charming Nicholas might prove to be a more formidable adversary than she first imagined. In her latest flawlessly written romance, Guhrke launches a new series by elegantly scrutinizing the trade in American wealth for British titles with skillfulness reminiscent of that of Edith Wharton and a sophisticated sense of wit in the vein of Oscar Wilde. Graced with an abundance of memorable characters and rich in lush sensuality, When the Marquess Met His Match is pure reading bliss. --John Charles

A review from Bookworm1858
By bookworm1858
Guhrke wrote one of my favorite romances of all time, one of the few I've actually bought for my Nook (rather than waiting for a free copy to become available): And Then He Kissed Her, read pre-blog so no review. I haven't followed her writing super closely since then but decided that I'd like to check out this newest because of how pretty the woman's dress is on the cover (what a lovely color!) and because it was about rich Americans coming to London to snag British peers for husbands, which is just a fun storyline.

So our first character here is Lady Belinda Featherstone (awesome last name) who was herself a young rich American who fell head over heels for a British lord only to discover after the marriage was consummated that he only married her for her money. This disillusionment has sustained her in her widowhood, serving as a matchmaker for other young innocent Americans, to provide a happier fate for them. Meanwhile she lives a life of absolute propriety, content as the marriage broker without love for herself.

Our male lead is Nicholas, Marquess of Trubridge, a shameless rake whose reputation was spotted from a young age and has lived an indolent life unrepentantly. Until his domineering father cuts him off, forcing Nicholas to seek a mercenary marriage to restore himself to his former fortune. However he intends to be honest about his need for money and seek a bride he has at least some affection for even if love will not be the foundation.

The two are instantly at odds with Belinda particularly concerned about a young American friend and desperate to prevent other girls from falling into the same miserable marriage she had while Nicholas feels judged without understanding. Of course antagonistic sparks soon give way to friendlier passionate sparks as the two are powerless to fight their growing feelings for each other. This book had plenty of snappy banter and light moments to keep me easily engaged. I feel like it's a typical length for a romance and though I grew a bit tired of the baggage each character had, at least it is shed by the end for the HEA.

Engaging plot and eloquent style did not make up for the uninspiring couple
By Penny Black
Laura Lee Ghurke has a way with words. Her books are always a pleasure to read, and this one is no exception. It's just too bad the couple in this story left me with a luke-warm feeling at best.

The heroine was deeply hurt by her first husband: not only did he reject her tender feelings after marrying her for money, but ignored her, keeping to his mistresses and gambling, while he was alive, and left her destitute upon his death. Rather than become a victim of her circumstances, she came up with a way to amass a fortune of her own and retain her position in society, which would have been admirable if she hadn't turned into a bitter and judgmental prude in the process.

Since attaining his majority, the hero has made all his choices to aggravate his father, the manipulative duke. At thirty, he acts no differently than he had when he was twenty, and the only thing that prompts him to change his lifestyle is his father finding a way to cut him off his trust fund. He does have an estate which is independent of his father's fortune, but why bother with responsibility if one can simply marry money?

For the better part of the story, the heroine mistreats the hero for no other reason, but he reminds her of her late husband. He does nothing to correct her misconception and accepts her scorn as his due because wants her. He'd marry her too if only she were rich, but since she's not he'd hire her to find him a rich wife. And then, after they both have a reversal of opinion, they get together for no discernible reason other than physical attraction, but which they were calling 'love'.

But, even though I was disappointed with this book, reading it was worth my time for the background it gave for the next installment of the series. How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days: An American Heiress in London turned out to be the best Ms Guhrke has written yet.

Ms. Guhrke has not lost her deft skill as a writer.
By myotherself
Back in the days when I was voraciously reading all the historical romance novels I could get my hands on Laura Lee Guhrke was definitely one of my favorite authors. I liked the way she built her characters and situations so they didn't have the artificial feel some historicals seem to consist of. Reading too many books in the same genre led to major burn out for me. Luckily, when I saw this novel being offered something struck a chord and I was ready to read another historical romance. The "matchmaker" storyline is not new for the genre, but the excellent handling of both characters and plot development definitely set this novel apart. And, just to put some luscious icing on the cake, this is only the first in Ms. Guhrke's new American Heiress in London series.

Belinda Featherstone was a very innocent eighteen year old American heiress when she married into the English aristocracy. Her outwardly charming husband wasted no time in telling her she was important to him only because of her dowry and he promptly proceeded to show her exactly what kind of life she would be living. Having been a widow for many years, this twenty-eight year old woman is now well established as a matchmaker for young, wealthy American girls and English peers of the realm. When Nicholas, Marquess of Trubridge explains his desire to become a client Belinda realizes he is exactly the same type as her husband had been. The only difference is that Nicholas shows no hesitation in letting her know he must marry for money. His father has cut off the payments from his trust fund and the unrepentant rake has no money. After all, French mistresses don't come cheap!

Ms. Guhrke created an interesting give-and-take between Belinda and Nicholas which was a pleasure to read. The story is presented from the point of view of both lead characters and we watch as they both begin to understand themselves better when they feel an attraction growing between them. Problems continue to manifest to keep them apart for a goodly portion of the story, but this author is wise in not waiting until the final sentence of the book to show the reader how the situations will be resolved. There are several moderately explicit sex scenes in the novel so you need to be aware of that if you make reading decisions based on that information. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel for the lively repartee between the characters and the reasonableness of the circumstances they were working through. It is wonderful to see that Ms. Guhrke has not lost her deft skill as a writer while I've been away. Maybe it's time for me to explore what's been written while I was on hiatus.

A brilliant, but ugly man
By christopher m mathews
This is Rostand's masterpiece, telling the story of the heroic free spirit as an outcast in the physical world. A brilliant, but ugly man, in love with a beautiful woman, who tries to win her, not for himself, but for his handsome, yet stupid, rival. You can just imagine all the conflicts that arise, between the protagonists, and within the souls of each. Does our hero achieve his values? Read and find out...

Seven Wonders Book 2: Lost in Babylon, by Peter Lerangis

Percy Jackson meets Indiana Jones in the New York Times bestselling epic adventure Seven Wonders! Lost in Babylon is the second book in a seven-book series by master storyteller Peter Lerangis. This sequel to the bestselling The Colossus Rises chronicles Jack McKinley and his friends as they carry on their mission to save their lives—and the world—by locating seven magic orbs called Loculi, which are hidden in the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. After defeating the Colossus of Rhodes and capturing the first of the Loculi, their friend Marco has disappeared. With no leads, no clues, and no one else to turn to, the kids have no choice but to trust Professor Bhegad and the Karai Institute again as they head off to Babylon.

Rick Riordan, author of the Percy Jackson series, praised Seven Wonders Book 1: The Colossus Rises as "a high-octane mix of modern adventure and ancient secrets. Young readers will love this story. I can't wait to see what's next in the Seven Wonders series!"

From School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—After finding the first Loculus and escaping Brother Dimitros and the other Massarym monks in the first book in the series, The Colossus Rises (HarperCollins, 2013), Jack McKinley and his friends could use a vacation. But they'll get no time off as Marco, the most athletic and headstrong of the Select, has vanished along with the Loculus, one of the keys to restoring the power of Atlantis and saving the lives of the four teens who share the G7W gene. Tracking Marco down will lead the group to their next mission, finding the Loculus hidden in the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Their adventure will place them in the middle of an ancient civilization, introduce them to a new friend, and challenge their understanding of the motives and methods of the two secret organizations searching for the Loculi. Johnathan McClain's youthful voice captures Jack's wry sense of humor and moments of vulnerability. He deftly changes voices to distinguish characters, from the burly and terse bodyguard Torquin to the supportive and clever servant Daria in Babylon. Particularly entertaining is his portrayal of Professor Bhegad. McClain gives the leader of the Karai Institute a high-pitched, hyper voice that belies the secrets he's keeping from the Select. With a solid sense of pacing, McClain guides listeners through the many twists in the narrative. Much is left unanswered and a revelation at the end will leave fans anxiously awaiting the next title.—Amanda Raklovits, Champaign Public Library, IL

From Booklist
“I have this gene that basically cuts off a person’s life at age 14. It’s called G7W and all of us have it.” So says our narrator, Jack McKinley, who, along with three other teens, is on a quest to find the second of seven magical orbs (Loculi) that together will provide a cure for their condition. This time they head through a wormhole to Babylon’s Hanging Gardens for the second Loculus, but they face internal betrayal and doubts about the very organization that is keeping them alive. Time travel, number systems, ancient Babylonian history, long division, and monsters with deadly spit are just a few of the clever elements in this fast-paced, geek’s dream of a book. Action keeps the plot hopping, with brief bits of character building that will bond readers to the young protags. Although this second entry in the Seven Wonders series can be read on its own, readers are still advised to begin at the beginning. Once discovered, it won’t stay on the shelf for long. Even better than the first. Can't wait to see what the gang does next. Recommend for Grades 5-9
By Sunshine on a Rainy Day
SUMMARY: Marco has disappeared with the first of seven Loculus needed to possibly cure the four select teens who have the gene that will kill them by age fourteen. Jack, and the other two set out to find him. Following clues, the gang ends up in another ancient wonder, the lost city of Babylon, where another loculus is supposed to be stored. After many trials and tribulations as well as a run in with the enemy, the gang changes in a way none of them expects.

THE GOOD: This story was more riveting than the first. I was caught up in where was Marco and what was he up to. All along you know he is up to something, but not what actually happens. New characters enter the scene which adds interest. Again, there is plenty of predictability, but it was still exciting and never stopped me from wanting to know what happens next. There were tons of plot twists that kept me going. I listened to this on audio CD and the reader did a much better job than book one. Again, there was more about Babylon, time warps and numbers than I was interested in, but that is what will make many preteens and teens fall in love with this series.
THE NOT AS GOOD: I felt like this story was a little bit too long and occasionally took one too many turns (probably to set up the next book). I felt the author could have cut a little of the extra fat off the story and made it even better. Again there was quite a bit of violence and destruction as well as death and cruelty.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: GRADES 5-9 due to maturity and violence

better than the first book
By BJ Almeda
REVIEWED BY MARY GRACE PENARANDA

The Cover
I wasn't really attracted to the cover when I first saw it. They could have placed more emphasis on the Hanging Garden and made it more beautiful. But, im no artist, so I guess they think it was more fitted to use this particular cover instead.

The Story
Three words. I. Love. It.

You know an author is doing something right when you just have to stay up late at night to finish a book. And that's what I just did. And I crave for more.

The second book took off where the first one left. Confusion. But that was after our three heroes undergone a process of revival after the taxing quest they've just gone through. That and the fact that Marco vanished with the single object that they've risked their lives on. But like any great friends, they showed little to no sign of doubt towards him. With the support from the Karai Institute, Jack, Cass and Aly went looking for their missing friend.

I must say, the whole story intrigued me. I enjoyed every adventure they had as if I was with them. I had a lot of questions going on and some of them were answered in this book. Some. Then new ones came popping out at the end of the book. It feels like I'm in this cycle of never-ending venture of learning and finding out answers. Teehee. It was kind of confusing at first but Mr. Lerangis gives the readers a rundown of what has happened so you'll never be lost story wise. And the ending. I just have to say, I think I saw that one coming. I mean, the possibility of it all. It was a bit obvious from the clues given. But it still surprised me. Makes me wanna time skip everything and read the next book. The usual humour was present. From time to time, I find myself chuckling or smiling while reading. So definitely a good sign.

I think the only thing that bugged me was Jack, Cass and Aly's naivety. But then if you'll think about, though they went through a lot, they are still kids. And being able to understand certain kind of things, especially in the way people works, takes experience.

My Final Verdict
More or less, Mr. Lerangis delivered the plot well. I was hooked. Though there were some aggravating moments, like too mach drag for some things to happen, it went well. This was definitely better than the first book If I may say so myself. Im giving it 4.5/5 and with the rating system goodreads have, I'll probably give it a 5 ;)

With all that being said, BRING ME THE THIRD BOOK BABY!! Teehee.

Lets Do The Time Warp!
By Greg Polansky
So now we know that the 7 Loculi must be found in order to raise Atlantis and heal our four heroes. But the first Loculus from the Colossus of Rhodes was lost. And now our heroes must somehow find it and the next Loculus - in the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Only problem is that they were destroyed thousands of years ago. Or were they?

This outing of the Seven Wonders series is better than the first. It delves deeper into the history of the objects of power and into the history of Atlantis. There are some minor factual errors - The Temple of Artemis had nothing to do with the harvest. Artemis was the goddess of the hunt, the moon, virginity. Still, it's a pretty good continuation of the series with some interesting plot developments towards the end of the book.

Onto the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
