*Starred Review* Lady Belinda Featherstone might be the best matchmaker in England, but even she has her limits. When Nicholas, the Marquess of Trubridge, informs Belinda he is in the market for a wife, Belinda thinks he must be joking. When she discovers that Nicholas has been separated from his trust fund until he marries a suitable lady, she becomes infuriated. A notorious rake and heartless cad, Nicholas is cut from the same matrimonial cloth as her late husband, so if Nicholas thinks Belinda will help him find some poor, naive American heiress to wed, well, he is sadly mistaken. Using every trick in her matchmaking book, Belinda sets about scuttling Nicholas’ matrimonial plans only to find that the irresistibly charming Nicholas might prove to be a more formidable adversary than she first imagined. In her latest flawlessly written romance, Guhrke launches a new series by elegantly scrutinizing the trade in American wealth for British titles with skillfulness reminiscent of that of Edith Wharton and a sophisticated sense of wit in the vein of Oscar Wilde. Graced with an abundance of memorable characters and rich in lush sensuality, When the Marquess Met His Match is pure reading bliss. --John Charles

A review from Bookworm1858

Guhrke wrote one of my favorite romances of all time, one of the few I've actually bought for my Nook (rather than waiting for a free copy to become available): And Then He Kissed Her, read pre-blog so no review. I haven't followed her writing super closely since then but decided that I'd like to check out this newest because of how pretty the woman's dress is on the cover (what a lovely color!) and because it was about rich Americans coming to London to snag British peers for husbands, which is just a fun storyline.

So our first character here is Lady Belinda Featherstone (awesome last name) who was herself a young rich American who fell head over heels for a British lord only to discover after the marriage was consummated that he only married her for her money. This disillusionment has sustained her in her widowhood, serving as a matchmaker for other young innocent Americans, to provide a happier fate for them. Meanwhile she lives a life of absolute propriety, content as the marriage broker without love for herself.

Our male lead is Nicholas, Marquess of Trubridge, a shameless rake whose reputation was spotted from a young age and has lived an indolent life unrepentantly. Until his domineering father cuts him off, forcing Nicholas to seek a mercenary marriage to restore himself to his former fortune. However he intends to be honest about his need for money and seek a bride he has at least some affection for even if love will not be the foundation.

The two are instantly at odds with Belinda particularly concerned about a young American friend and desperate to prevent other girls from falling into the same miserable marriage she had while Nicholas feels judged without understanding. Of course antagonistic sparks soon give way to friendlier passionate sparks as the two are powerless to fight their growing feelings for each other. This book had plenty of snappy banter and light moments to keep me easily engaged. I feel like it's a typical length for a romance and though I grew a bit tired of the baggage each character had, at least it is shed by the end for the HEA.

Engaging plot and eloquent style did not make up for the uninspiring couple
By Penny Black
Laura Lee Ghurke has a way with words. Her books are always a pleasure to read, and this one is no exception. It's just too bad the couple in this story left me with a luke-warm feeling at best.

The heroine was deeply hurt by her first husband: not only did he reject her tender feelings after marrying her for money, but ignored her, keeping to his mistresses and gambling, while he was alive, and left her destitute upon his death. Rather than become a victim of her circumstances, she came up with a way to amass a fortune of her own and retain her position in society, which would have been admirable if she hadn't turned into a bitter and judgmental prude in the process.

Since attaining his majority, the hero has made all his choices to aggravate his father, the manipulative duke. At thirty, he acts no differently than he had when he was twenty, and the only thing that prompts him to change his lifestyle is his father finding a way to cut him off his trust fund. He does have an estate which is independent of his father's fortune, but why bother with responsibility if one can simply marry money?

For the better part of the story, the heroine mistreats the hero for no other reason, but he reminds her of her late husband. He does nothing to correct her misconception and accepts her scorn as his due because wants her. He'd marry her too if only she were rich, but since she's not he'd hire her to find him a rich wife. And then, after they both have a reversal of opinion, they get together for no discernible reason other than physical attraction, but which they were calling 'love'.

But, even though I was disappointed with this book, reading it was worth my time for the background it gave for the next installment of the series. How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days: An American Heiress in London turned out to be the best Ms Guhrke has written yet.

Ms. Guhrke has not lost her deft skill as a writer.

Back in the days when I was voraciously reading all the historical romance novels I could get my hands on Laura Lee Guhrke was definitely one of my favorite authors. I liked the way she built her characters and situations so they didn't have the artificial feel some historicals seem to consist of. Reading too many books in the same genre led to major burn out for me. Luckily, when I saw this novel being offered something struck a chord and I was ready to read another historical romance. The "matchmaker" storyline is not new for the genre, but the excellent handling of both characters and plot development definitely set this novel apart. And, just to put some luscious icing on the cake, this is only the first in Ms. Guhrke's new American Heiress in London series.

Belinda Featherstone was a very innocent eighteen year old American heiress when she married into the English aristocracy. Her outwardly charming husband wasted no time in telling her she was important to him only because of her dowry and he promptly proceeded to show her exactly what kind of life she would be living. Having been a widow for many years, this twenty-eight year old woman is now well established as a matchmaker for young, wealthy American girls and English peers of the realm. When Nicholas, Marquess of Trubridge explains his desire to become a client Belinda realizes he is exactly the same type as her husband had been. The only difference is that Nicholas shows no hesitation in letting her know he must marry for money. His father has cut off the payments from his trust fund and the unrepentant rake has no money. After all, French mistresses don't come cheap!

Ms. Guhrke created an interesting give-and-take between Belinda and Nicholas which was a pleasure to read. The story is presented from the point of view of both lead characters and we watch as they both begin to understand themselves better when they feel an attraction growing between them. Problems continue to manifest to keep them apart for a goodly portion of the story, but this author is wise in not waiting until the final sentence of the book to show the reader how the situations will be resolved. There are several moderately explicit sex scenes in the novel so you need to be aware of that if you make reading decisions based on that information. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel for the lively repartee between the characters and the reasonableness of the circumstances they were working through. It is wonderful to see that Ms. Guhrke has not lost her deft skill as a writer while I've been away. Maybe it's time for me to explore what's been written while I was on hiatus.
