disjointed and not informative

I purchased this book because my grandson also fell into a pool and now is in rehab for an anoxic brain injury. The book is written poorly and totally disjointed - Dr Weiss repeats himself, goes off on tangents and rants, and very little is truly about his son Justin and his recovery process. It's too bad, since there isn't a lot of books available about this type of brain injury - which differs from traumatic brain injuries (such as one would sustain in a car accident).

a must read

I bought this book because my wife is a patient of Dr Weiss. The book is a look in to the health care system and what it took to keep one little boy alive against all odds. Many of us would not have had the options that this father had because of our monetary situation. Yet he and his wife's love for this child would not allow them to give up. It is truly a heart breaking story and well worth reading for every parent.

Four stars. Pretty well written, but repetition and timeline jumps detracted from the flow of the story. I wish the very best for this dedicated family and their amazing little boy.

Well done dystopian middle grade series

This is the third book in the Unwanted series by McMann. McMann has said that she has seven books planned for this series. This was a decent book in the series, the beginning was a bit slow but it picked up pace in the second half of the story. I read this with my six year old and we both enjoyed it. The following contains spoilers from book 2, so just be aware of that before reading on.

This book picks up right where The Island of Silence leaves off. Alex and crew are struggling with Mr. Today's death and trying to survive on the barren part of the Island that used to be Artime'. Lani and Samheed are still being held captive on Warbler island. Aaron is still doing his best to take over the rule of Quill (the dystopian society that Alex and the other Artimeans were purged from). This book is mainly about the struggle to restore Artime' to its former glory, rescuing Lani and Samheed from Warbler Island, and discovering a new Pirate Island.

This book was engaging and easy to read. There are lots of wonderful characters here as well.

Alex plays the lead role throughout the book as he struggles to restore Artime and take over Mr. Today's role as head mage. He struggles a lot with the responsibility and the stress of it. He also struggles a lot with confidence, as the book continues he grows into his responsibilities and learns it's okay to believe in himself and to accept help from his friends as well.

The other two characters that play very large roles in the story are Simber and Sky. Sky is the silent girl that was introduced in Island of Silence. She is smart, supportive, and an excellent compliment to all of the stress that Alex is dealing with. We also see a lot of Samheed and Lani as they fight to adapt to their situation as captives on Warbler Island.

As you can probably tell from the above, this book is told from a couple points of view. Mostly we hear from Alex and then from Samheed/Lani. We also hear some from Aaron in Quill and from the leader of Warbler Island.

The first part of the book is a bit frustrating and slow. Alex and his friends just spend so much time struggling to restore Artime' that their frustration is really contagious. I just wanted them to figure it out so bad! Things pick up mid way through the book though as Alex and crew set out to rescue Samheed and Lani and discover a fourth new island that holds a lot of surprises for them.

The world increases quite a bit in complexity in this book, we learn a lot more about the other islands. The characters also begin to speculate about how they actually got on the island. I am very intrigued to see how all of these books end up tying together.

As I mentioned above I read this with my six year old son. Everything in this book was pretty kid safe. This book does have a bit more about who is falling in love with who, there are also a couple kissing scenes. My son found these boring and thought the fact that Alex kissed a girl was yucky. Still the relationships portrayed are healthy and sweet, so I didn't mind this being my son's first foray into reading a book about boys and girls liking each other :-)

The book ends on an absolutely horrible cliffhanger, which kind of sucks. The main goal of this book is wrapped up nicely though, it's just that McMann sets up the storyline and problem for the next book and totally leaves the reader hanging.

Overall this was a good continuation of this series. The characters are engaging and interesting, the world is intricate and creative as well. I thought the beginning of the book was a bit slow, but things picked up pace towards the end. I am intrigued to see what happens next. This whole series is recommended to fans of middle grade fantasy; although this book does have a bit of a dystopian flavor to it as well.

This book sets your blood on fire

This was a great story in the Bachelor of San Gabriel Fireman series. How to Tame a Wild Fireman is the fourth installment.

This series is one of my favorites and Jennifer Bernard did not disappoint. The plot was great and the characters were fantastic! I love the bachelors and can't wait to read more about them."

Longest journey starts with a single stroke. : )

Psycho's story is easily my favorite from the series to date. Patrick is from a small town in Nevada called, Loveless. After a tragic accident he never returns to that town and his past. That is until his Captain offers his an opportunity to go help with the wildfires that are endangering his hometown. Patrick hasn't seen his family or Lara in what seems like an eternity. Both left Loveless to never turn back. Love him or hate him, Patrick wasn't the kind of guy you ever forgot.
The old friends to lovers is one of my favorite troupes. Patrick is cocky and forward and obviously very interested in his old friend, Lara. Lara? Not so much.
"I don't think we should be involved anymore. We'll still be friends, of course. I'm glad we got to know each other again. And I really appreciated the... well, having sex with you."
I have to say, I almost died with how hard I laughed at her saying this. Can we say awkward?

Of the 8 in this series that I have read so far, there isn't a point that sticks with me more than when Patrick is trying to prove to her how he feels.
"But it comes down to this. I love you. I want you. I trust you more than anyone I know. I admire you. I respect you. And I can't keep my hands off you. To me, that adds up to spending my life with you. But, if you aren't there yet, I'll wait. Not patiently, though. I'll be the kid in the backseat going, 'Are we there yet, are we there yet?' "

Taming a too long story

This is my first book by Jennifer Bernard and I enjoyed it. I am a sucker for stories about childhood friends/sweethearts reuniting as adults and this one fit the bill.

It's the story of Patrick "Psycho" Callahan and Lara Nelson. They have known each other since high school. Lara is best friends with Patrick's brother and the three of them are pretty inseparable. Until the boys get into an accident. Everyone goes their separate ways. Lara goes to med school and Patrick becomes a fireman. They both return to their hometown of Loveless, Nev., when its threatened by a wildfire. Sparks fly, romance ensues.

I liked Patrick. I thought he was strong yet sensitive. Despite being an adrenaline junkie, he had a soft, smooshy center.

Lara was OK. I thought she was smart, competent and caring but I never really got a sense of her personality beyond that.

I enjoyed reading about the relationship between Patrick and Lara but I also felt like there was too much going on in the book and it didn't have a focus. There was the search for Patrick's brother Liam, there was Patrick and the llama, there was Patrick's relationship with the family he hadn't seen in 10 years, there was the Goddesses, Lara and her relationship with her attending physician and what to do about The Haven for Spiritual and Sexual Healing.

The book would have been much better if there had only been one secondary story instead of what seemed like 15. I was especially annoyed by the llama story. It was great that he saved the llama but the frequency with which it kept reappearing bordered on ridiculous.

I also found myself losing interest toward the end. Lara and Patrick went to Mexico, they came back from Mexico, there was another wildfire, Patrick had to save his home, Lara went home only to go back to Loveless ... It all got to be a bit much. My biggest complaint is that this book was too long.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and thought it was well-written. I'll probably give Jennifer Bernard a second read.

Great little book series!

This little book and the other Really Wooly Little books are great for your child's book collection. They are easy to read, they are small and well made so they will not fall apart when babies chew or suck on them and they have a great message. My son has most of the collection and I would definitely recommend one or all for a gift or for your child's book collection.

I absolutely love these Really Woollky books! This is the second one that I have bought, and I once again so impressed with the beaughtiful, colorful artwork and the wonderful message that it contains for little ones. I wanted something that I can read quickly to my daughter who does not sit still for long, but also has good things for her to learn from the Bible. This is such a great book and it has so many pages I think my daughter especially likes all the artwork because there is so much to look at within each picture. I cannot wait to buy my next one!

New and Improved: Ecuador Climbing and Hiking Guide

Detailed and accurate, thorough and comprehensive, the new Ecuador Climbing and Hiking Guide is an invaluable resource to anyone planning on climbing or trekking in Ecuador. This is the only available guidebook to Ecuador that covers climbing and hiking throughout the entire country: from the western coast to the eastern jungle, including short walks in urban parks to extreme technical ascents of high-altitude volcanoes. The maps and charts are easy to follow and the brief introduction and highlighted area facts are helpful for those with short attention spans (like me) in determining whether or not to visit the area in question. The information on lodging and gear shops is up-to-date and useful. There is a lot of helpful information for birders and naturalists. For climbers, climbing routes are indicated by red lines on current color photos. No more struggling to decipher routes on hand-drawn topos! The authors, Thurber and Rachowiecki, and the folks at Viva did a good job with this book and it should be the go to resource for years to come.

A Must-have Guide for Climbers and Hikers in Ecuador

Writing guidebooks for Ecuador, as with much of Latin America, is like aiming at a moving target -- prices rise, governments fall, businesses close. But if that's tricky, try navigating the region's equally fickle landscape, which is always undergoing some grand transformation.

Despite erupting volcanoes, avalanches, and unpredictable weather, the Ecuador Hiking and Climbing Guide (V!VA Travel Guides, 2009) has kept leisurely day-hikers and hard-core climbers pointed in the right direction for more than two decades. Now in an updated and expanded sixth edition with a new publisher, Rob Rachowiecki and Mark Thurber's guide retools dozens of trips, from coastal day-hikes to high-páramo treks to multi-day jungle jaunts.

Also an essential outfitter's resource, the guide includes where to buy food and hardware, rent a full rack of climbing gear and hire guides and porters. New quick-reference hiking and climbing "matrices" list the particulars of every trip, including distances, altitude, weather and the exact topo map to buy at the Military Geographical Institute (a visit to this buttoned-up institution is all part of the fun).

The hikes are the guide's biggest strength. The authors interpret plenty of easy and moderate tramps that are perfect for newbies, even at 10,000 feet above sea level, and for long-haul trekkers there are detailed backcountry routes through the Avenue of the Volcanoes, including such classics as the Trek of the Condor and the northernmost end of the Inca Trail. If birds, rural life, or hot springs are your thing, the matrices will help you pick out the best trail, and the hiking maps have been entirely revamped and now show GPS coordinates.

Mountaineers can select from more than a dozen milder ascents to prepare for tough technical peaks or big summits over 18,000 feet. The authors threw out the last edition's tired black-and-white mountain graphics and opted for super-imposing the climbing routes over high-quality photographs. This fresh scheme gives sharper, more accurate perspectives of the climbs, ones that should dull less quickly against the surprisingly swift pace of change in Andean terrain. The climbing instructions, however, ultimately work best as intelligent planning advice and pre-ascent psych-outs rather than as substitutes for certified guides (unless your crampons are truly well worn).

For the armchair climber who opts to hang by the fire while his buddies set out on a moonlight climb, there's also good reading about Edward Whymper's record-breaking summits during the 1880s, long before Gore-tex and climbing guides hit the market.

Fantastic Update

While I enjoyed the last edition of this book, the latest published by V!VA Travel Guides is fantastic. The maps in general are clearer now and the color route maps in the center of the book make routefinding on some of the more popular peaks easier.
The introduction and general information sections have been updated to get you started on your trip to Ecuador while the individual hike facts provide information on the difficulty of the hike or climb, access, equipment recommendations and hiking directions.
The book is organized by geographic areas and now includes very useful hiking and climbing matrices that will help trip planning. They include: trail name, distance, time required, difficulty, altitude, best time of year for the route, map reference, special interest (why you may like the climb/hike) and a page reference.
Access information is oriented on public transportation (mainly buses) so if you plan to rent a car, a road map would be a useful supplement.

I often get asked by readers what order the Jack Daniels books should be read in. 

I purposely write each book so it can be read without any prior knowledge of any of the others. If you want to start on the last book and work backwards, or start in the middle, you can still enjoy the series without missing anything.

Q & A with Joe Konrath

Q: Did you always want to be a writer?

Joe: No. I wanted to be a model for husky pants. But then, when I was barely a teen, they stopped making husky sizes.

Damn those clothing designers for shattering my dreams.

Q: When did you decide to become a writer?

Joe: I mean, I'm not offended by the term "husky." Now they're called "relaxed fit" jeans. It's the same thing, but there's nothing sexy about being a "relaxed fit jeans" model. Husky sounds like you're owning those extra pounds, making them work for you. Relaxed fit sounds like you eat too much and are just plain lazy.

What was your question again? Ideas? I hunt through James Patterson's garbage, and steal what he tossed. When Patterson throws out ten pages, that's like fifty chapters.

Ha ha ha! Get it? Because his chapters are so short! I swear, the last Patterson book I read had more chapters than page numbers.

Actually, I just watch old Outer Limits episodes and appropriate the plots, like Alan Moore did with Watchmen.

Q: Who do you like to read?

Blake Crouch, Ann Voss Peterson, Jeff Strand, Henry Perez, F. Paul Wilson, Tom Schreck. Pretty much anyone I collaborate with. Because here's a dirty little secret: when you co-write a book with someone, you kind of have to read the stuff they wrote.

My absolute favorite author is Dr. Seuss. In fact, I tried my hand at writing a few Dr. Seuss-style children's books. Here are the titles:

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to sell any of these. I think it may be some sort of rights-issue thing.

Q: What's a work day in the life of Joe Konrath like?

Joe: I wake up early and make some eggs.

Then the smoke alarm goes off, because the eggs are burning because I fell asleep again.

Then I spend ten minutes explaining to the firemen that show up how I'll be more careful next time.

I go back to bed, and the next thing I know, it's around noon. Time for lunch. I want to make an egg sandwich, but I'm out of eggs. And bread. And pretty much everything except some sort of fruit that's been in the refrigerator forever and might be a lime. Or not. It may not even be fruit. So I put it back and think about cooking some pasta but that seems like a lot of work for just lunch, so I go take a nap.

Around three I get up, ready to start my work day, but first I need to eat something. Do pizza places deliver at three? I make a few calls. Nope, no one delivers before five.

I check the fridge. The lime thing is still there, but it looks like it moved from where I saw it last. How odd. Did it move by itself? I'm really hungry, so I decide to give it a try.

It's not a lime, because limes don't have bones.

When I finish eating, I sit down at my computer and write my daily quota, thirty pages.

Q: What's next for Joe Konrath?

Joe: This Spring, Carson's will be releasing my signature scent, called Nocturnal Emission. Available in parfum, eau du toilet, cologne, and roll on. I like the roll on. It tickles my armpits.  My goal is to make enough money to buy Nebraska. Then I'll rename it Joebraska, and invite all of my friends to visit. We're going to have a big party in the state capital, Joemaha. You can come, if you want.

Q: Do you want to talk at all about your books?

Joe: Nope. Not really.

Entertaining

I enjoyed reading this story. There were a lot of things that seemed impossible or unreal, but the story flowed well. It kept my interest peaked enough that I was able suspend my disbelief over the lack of suspicion with a box of candy that was just left in her car....Her supervisor letting her return to active duty without being cleared by a doctor...Overly stupid FBI agents(I think this was put in for comic relief so I just laughed when the FBI got in the way).....her being clear headed enough to solve crimes with no sleep and excruciating pain...I deal with both and a person will lose focus when these are combined or prolonged as the story suggests.

The main thing for me is entertainment value and Whisky Sour scores high in that department...I wanted to keep on reading and was not disappointed at the end....I give this story four ****stars...

Jack is a pathetic, sad, and weak creature

I learned long ago to warn of spoilers in my review unlike some others so BEWARE, SPOILERS! This is described as a laugh out loud book and I would hazard a guess that the author thinks he is MUCH funnier than he actually is. So...not so much. Some of the scenes were straight out of a form i.e. the bad guy in the closet waiting for her to get home. I didn't care for the way the author totally belittled the FBI agents, I personally don't believe they are as stupid as he made them out to be (at least the ones I know certainly are not). As far as the descriptions of the type of serial killers that was also straight from a book about serial killers (and I know that bc I had to do a 10 page paper with 10 references on serial killers for my degree in psychology). My biggest complaint about this book was Jack herself. What a pathetic personality. She is late 40's and still in love with her ex that she has been divorced from for 15 yrs. Really? She is an insomniac and has been since her husband left her and yet in the 15 yrs that she hasn't slept she has never realized that even though her brain won't shut off she has yet to realize that her body still needs rest. If she doesn't get that needed rest she is no good to anyone. The biggest problem with her is that she is not just a whiner but she is stupid. They consume a bag of candy that they don't know where it came from that was on her front seat and all this knowing that the 'bad guy' knows who she is? She becomes incapacitated by being shot with a 22? In the leg? without hitting an artery? hmmm...nope. Idk if this author doesn't know women or if he just knows wimps or what but being shot through the thigh with a 22 would not be much more than a bing sting to me. While I have never been shot with a gun I have given birth, had several surgeries and was always back at work within a few days and that includes a hysterectomy so I kind of resent that he made her that much of a wimp. I can see her losing a fight against the guy that is 6'5 but the other stuff was just too wimpy for words. If you are going to write a strong female character then write it, don't follow the cliche and turn around and make her weak and or stupid.

Good read

I'm officially a fan of this series. There are only two things I didn't like. One, I'm a huge fan of Criminal Minds, so seeing FBI, in particular BAU agents, portrayed as idiots really bothered me. I prefer to believe they are like cops on steroids. I'm sure I just made every current and former cop hate me, but that's how I see it. Secondly, there is no way a licensed pharmacist would fill a schedule two drug without following protocols from the board of pharmacy. They would lose their license. Seeing a large quantity of a schedule two drug being filled and the pharmacist not following the protocols was inaccurate. It is fiction, so no big deal.
Otherwise, the characters were both funny and intense. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first book in the series, and look forward to the next one.
