In the spirit of Loving Frank and The Paris Wife, acclaimed novelist Melanie Benjamin pulls back the curtain on the marriage of one of America's most extraordinary couples: Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. For much of her life, Anne Morrow, the shy daughter of the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, has stood in the shadows of those around her, including her millionaire father and vibrant older sister, who often steals the spotlight. Then Anne, a college senior with hidden literary aspirations, travels to Mexico City to spend Christmas with her family. There she meets Colonel Charles Lindbergh, fresh off his celebrated 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic. Enthralled by Charles's assurance and fame, Anne is certain the celebrated aviator has scarcely noticed her. But she is wrong. Charles sees in Anne a kindred spirit, a fellow adventurer, and her world will be changed forever. The two marry in a headline-making wedding. Hounded by adoring crowds and hunted by an insatiable press, Charles shields himself and his new bride from prying eyes, leaving Anne to feel her life falling back into the shadows. In the years that follow, despite her own major achievements-she becomes the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States-Anne is viewed merely as the aviator's wife. The fairy-tale life she once longed for will bring heartbreak and hardships, ultimately pushing her to reconcile her need for love and her desire for independence, and to embrace, at last, life's infinite possibilities for change and happiness.

ANOTHER BENJAMIN MASTERPIECE

THE AVIATOR’S WIFE REVIEW

Fictional history, if done right, is my favorite read. Unfortunately, it is very often done poorly, producing books that frustrate and irritate me for their lack of authenticity. We need to talk about Melanie Benjamin, author of “The Aviator’s Wife.” And we should speak glowingly and with great admiration. She always seems to get it right, a tribute to her research, dedication, and resolve.

Benjamin, in her book notes, states that she wanted to tell the story of a famous woman who few people really know, who has a hero for a husband whom she supports without question, who is hounded constantly by the press, and who, after an early life of reticence, finally emerges as resilient and outspoken, very much her own woman and deserving of her own accolades. The author has done that with wonderful style.

Charles Lindbergh was the wildly celebrated aviator who made a 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic that secured his place in American history. Anne Morrow was the shy daughter of a U.S. Ambassador, often overshadowed by her father and her radiant older sister, who inexplicably captured the attention of of the most revered man in America. Their life together was full of achievement, sporadic happiness, tragedy, secrecy, abandonment, and, finally, revelation. Not many know of the turmoil between Anne and Charles, or the dysfunction in their family. Benjamin has researched it, analyzed it, and, with her marvelous writing skills, reimagined the emotional truths behind this remarkable relationship.

It’s a political story of an American hero with somewhat treasonous leanings, an anti-Semitic who held unfavorable opinions about the policies of his country during the early years of World War Two. The aviator’s wife who, at first, wasn’t brave enough separate herself from her husband’s domination, eventually disavowed his beliefs and emerged as perhaps the most fearless and courageous of the two, insisting on honesty and seeking answers about Lindbergh’s double life as he approached death at age 72.

It’s also the story of their children. The eldest, Charles, Jr., was tragically kidnapped and murdered. The couple’s other five children struggled with personality disorders and the specter of having parents and a family life in disarray. It is also revealed that Charles fathered seven other children with different partners as he roamed around the world doing his notable work while his family struggled at home without his presence.

Historical fiction fans, in search of marvelous writing, must not ignore Melanie Benjamin’s novels. She has recently released “The Swans of Fifth Avenue,” a penetrating look at Truman Capote. Her talent is obvious in all her books, and is particularly shining in Aviator’s Wife.

Fabulous! Melanie Benjamin reaches new heights of creativity!
By SYBIL BLAZEJ-YEE
I just finished reading "The Aviator's Wife" by Melanie Benjamin, the awe inspiring biographical novel of Anne Morrow Lindbergh that was a tale of living with a complete control freak. In addition it is about possibly the most scintillating and famous American couple of the first half of the twentieth century. Melanie Benjamin is careful to explain what is fiction and what is the truth in what amounts to the winnowing down of a mountain of research into a finely tuned operatic and controversial story of two lives. Kudos to Ms. Benjamin!
I truly understand now why my friend Brigitte gave me Anne Morrow Lindbergh's book, "Gift from the Sea," because that was a meditation on how to release those for whom you have a resentment (because she truly resented her husband who would probably be diagnosed as an OCD personality since it was always his way or no way) in the best/worst possible codependent scenario. It is a short but really lovely meditation on what it was to be a woman in the 20th century but has much that is universal and still pertains to dealing with stress today. So I advocate reading more of Anne Morrow Lindbergh's writings, which Melanie Benjamin does as well and urge readers to try more of Melanie Benjamin's writing, too! Enjoy!
