Don't Look Now (PERSEFONE Series Book 3), by Michelle Gagnon

This follow-up to the critically acclaimed Don't Turn Around—which Kirkus Reviews called "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for teens, a surefire hit"—raises the stakes to their absolute limit and will leave readers begging for the exciting conclusion. Having outsmarted the sinister Project Persephone, Noa and her friend Zeke are on the run again, moving across the country, protecting runaways before they become test subjects for the Project's horrific experiments. Noa knows all too well what that feels like: Whatever was done to her has left her exhausted and scared.

Back in Boston, Peter anxiously follows Noa's movements from his computer. But he's desperate to do more, especially when he learns what the Project has done to his ex-girlfriend, Amanda.

Then, in an explosive confrontation, Noa and her team are trapped in the one place they thought was safe. It will take everything Noa and Peter have to bring down the Project. And with no one to trust and enemies hiding at every turn, they may be the only people alive who can.

Gr 8 Up-Having escaped the clutches of Project Persephone at the conclusion of Don't Turn Around (HarperCollins, 2012), teen hacker Noa finds herself on the run. Along with fellow runaway Zeke, she takes down Persephone labs across the country and rescues as many kids as possible from experimentation and death. Back home in Boston, Peter runs the information side of things, providing data, blueprints, and technical support for their raids, all while dealing with some harsh difficulties of his own. They save a few kids at a time, but they are still just a small group of untrained teenagers against a ruthless corporate army that will stop at nothing to recapture Noa and finish her pathetic resistance. This second book in a trilogy introduces new characters and new threats to Noa and Peter and leads them headlong into a conclusion that should be eagerly anticipated. Don't Look Now is not as tech-heavy as the first book, mostly because Gagnon has taken those duties away from Noa and turned her more into a Katniss-type leader and symbol, leaving Peter to do the heavy lifting in the computer department. The action is a little more balanced this time around, spread throughout the book, and there are some serious issues along the way for all involved. Gagnon handles these developments and revelations well and they hit readers with the same force as they hit the characters. A few savvy teens will find the twists and turns to be fairly obvious, but they by no means detract from the fun of getting there.-Erik Knapp, Davis Library, Plano, TXα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Don’t Turn Around (2012) introduced the unpleasant notion of a pharmaceutical company stealing homeless kids and experimenting on them to create a wonder drug. This sequel contains every bit of the same whiz-bang, splitting our heroes down two parallel plots. Though Noa is experiencing strange physical changes since her operation, she nonetheless has become the leader of Persefone’s Army, a group of teen revolutionaries who stage raids on the corporation’s secret labs in the Southwest—although the latest raid might have led to a traitor in their midst. Meanwhile, Peter’s still in Boston, hacking hither and yon to figure out the secret to the deadly PEMA virus. Noa and Peter, who seemed to be heading toward romance in the first book, find themselves lusting for companions closer at hand, and these relationships become, shall we say, complicated. Hacking is usually death to prose, but Gagnon pulls it off smashingly, accelerating the crosscutting to a delirious pace by book’s end. Don’t chew those fingernails too hard—you’ll need them to turn the pages of the next volume. Grades 9-12. --Daniel Kraus

I'm recommending this to friends right and left...
By Aha
I finished this book within 3 days of when it came out on Kindle, and now I have to sit on my hands until the third book is available. I thought this middle book might be more tedious than the first because it has to span the gap, but that was NOT the case. In a lot of ways I thought it was more creative than the first book, and I ended up caring more about the characters.

A Thriller Worth Picking Up
By ChayseBWB
This is a series that will put the idea of a thriller in a whole other perspective. This book as well as Don't Look Now will take you on an adventure that will have slight effects of intense nail biting, standing on your toes, yelling madly, and possibly crying. This book would be nothing if it didn't create these emotions that will surely coarse through your body.

Plot: The book continues from where things left off. Noa is on the run and she is on a mission to save children from the grasp of the men experimenting on them. Dangers are becoming more and more present and they are always watching. The book grabs hold of you and pulls you through the chapters

Characters: We still see Peter, Amanda, Zeke and of course Noa as well as other characters from the first book as well as being introduced to new characters as the story continues. The characters create a family bond that I feel is not present in some of the families of our world. These characters are something else. They go through things that children are never expected to go through and we are able to see how strong they are and the maturity overpowers their young age.

Romance: There are a couple things that prove interesting in this category. We have Noa and Zeke and we, as readers, want something to happen but life keeps getting in the way. I have decided to categorize life as a word that I learned through Urban Dictionary: Boonish. Going back...We also have Peter and Amanda who although broke up, still have a fire lit between them. Things will hopefully progress further in the next book but I have to say the ending did kill me.

Ending: This is where the yelling and crying comes in. I knew this might happened and I thought it was going to happen earlier because that is how every author is. They enjoy watching the readers suffer. I have concluded that it is in their nature. It is what it is...

I will keep my eyes peeled for the last book in this amazing series. I invite all readers to check out this thrilling series that will blow your mind apart chapter by chapter. Michelle Gagnon encased me in chills once again and even now when writing this review I peak over my shoulder just in fear that maybe there is someone watching my every moves. Be warned.

I give it 5 bites!

Another amazing score for Gagnon
By jclynch90
Time and again, I have been disappointed in subsequent novels of a series after completing the first one. I was elated to discover that Michelle Gagnon's second attempt of Project Persephone was every bit as chilling and alluring as Don't Turn Around! Noa Torsen and Zeke are now on the run from mercenaries and commandos in the employ of the pharmaceutical company that started Project Persephone, with a ragtag band of rescued street kids and runaways like themselves along for the ride. Peter Gregory continues to help the beleaguered band of survivors from afar by once again putting himself at risk by implementing virtual back doors into Persephone's mainframe and breaking into the penthouse apartment of the creepy Mason in the hopes of alerting Noa and company of further danger. Peter's ex-girlfriend Amanda also plays a bigger role in this novel, stealing lists of names of potential victims of the project and passing them along to Mouse, a survivor of the streets that she is acquainted with. All is not well with Amanda however. Though the love quartet between Amanda, Peter, Zeke and Noa persists, Peter also fears that Amanda is contracting symptoms of Pema, the crippling and fatal disease featured so prominently in the first book. Not only does Peter have conflicting feelings for both the girls in his life, but he is also concerned and feeling sympathetic to Amanda as well, because a cure for the disease has not yet been found. This novel races along with the breakneck intensity of the first one, with just as many heart-pounding action scenes and moments of danger, and it's conclusion is truly epically breathtaking. Readers will eagerly anticipate the next and final installment of this amazing trilogy. Fans of Gagnon's other series and stand alone novels won't want to miss this one. On to the conclusion! Bravo for another stellar performance Michelle!
