High-stakes spy story set in an intriguing world

I read over 50 books a year, (possibly more, now that I've retired) yet I seldom take the time to write a public review. Across a Star-swept Sea, which I finished last night, still holds me in its unique world, and won't let me move on to another book until I write this. Peterfreund's characters are real, vital, and multi-faceted, and the world she builds in this YA sci-fi spy novel is beautiful, believable, intriguing, scary, and political. I strongly recommend it to people who don't usually read in this genre (as well as those who do, of course) because the strong plot and vivid world transcend usual genre expectations. Even the heroine's mother, who is a fairly minor character, was so evocatively drawn that she will stay with me for a very long time.
You can get an idea of the story details from the other reviews here (Miss Print nails it), so I won't rehash. It includes no zombies, no vampires, no space-ships, no alien races, and most importantly, no dull spots. A fascinating read.

For Darkness Shows The Stars was one of my favorite reads by Diana Peterfreund so when I saw she had a second book in the series coming out I was ecstatic, until I realized it wasn't going to be about Kai and Elliot but a whole slew of new characters, I was kind of eh I don't know sad...BUT this author is freaking amazing Across A Star Swept Sea was a wonderful read and I was jumping up with joy when Kai and Elliot made an appearance in the novel later on towards the end...it just really made my day.
Anyways on to the review.
Across A Star Swept Sea was a re-imagining of The Scarlet Pimpernel. All I know is it takes someone very clever to play the roll of someone incredibly air-headed on purpose and that is who Lady Persis Blake is, a brilliant minded girl who plays the role of a very popular socialite that everyone has pegged out to be dumb and only cares about fashion and other frivolous things. They don't realize it's all an act, a means to an end, no one has any clue she is the Wild Poppy who is notorious for helping the people of Galatea by rescuing them and bringing them to her land Albion. Needless to say I loved her character right off the bat. She was taking such a huge risk with her life and her sanity since there was a huge risk of her being turned into a Reduced if she got caught. I seriously admired her bravery and selflessness.
The world building was phenomenal which I didn't expect any less from Peterfreund. I do recommend reading the first book though because it will help you understand the world in this book a little bit more. The only negative thing I can think of about Across The Star Swept Sea would be the first few chapters of the book, it started off a little slow and unlike For Darkness Shows the Stars this one took me a minute to get into but once I did I could not put it down.
Another thing I really loved was the romance, this had that slow building romance where you are just dying to see the two come together but you know it wont happen not when Justen thinks Persis even though very beautiful is brainless and wants nothing to do with her but tolerates her because she knows all the right people and then there is Persis who had conflicting feelings for Justen. First off she was falling for him but she was ready to kill him also because she thought he was working with the enemy and was a spy. It all made for a very fun and exciting read.
Overall an awesome read and I can't recommend it enough.

The world which has been built here is unlike any I have ever read about- the descriptions are incredible and it's really amazin

"Across a Star-Swept Sea" is an incredible sequel that introduces a new world and cast of characters, making it also possible to work as a stand alone. Although common in the world that resulted in Reduced (individuals who are mentally disabled due to genetic engineering), New Pacifica is different than what we've viewed before in this series. Here, technology has continued to advance and when gene experiments and uses have grown. As such, the Reduced have been cured- although some, for an unknown reason, develop a severe dementia later in life. New Pacifica is divided into two kingdoms, one which is mostly stable and thriving-Albion- and the other which has undergone revolution- Galatea.
In Galatea, the revolutionaries have begun punishing all aristos and their families- and soon anyone who displeases them- with an artificial reduction caused by medication. In response, the Wild Poppy has arisen. Persis, a teenaged girl, has adopted this persona to rescue the individuals artificially reduced and attempt to bring some justice into the world. She hides her identity by pretending to be a vapid aristo. On one of her missions, she suffers from the "genetemps" sickness and is luckily found by a young medic, Justen, who quickly barters his way into the ship and with them without learning who Persis really is (the Poppy). Justen is the descendent of the woman who found the cure for reduction, and he doesn't agree with the way Galatea has been progressing. To avert suspicion of his deflection, the princess Isla proposes that Persis and Justen fake a romance to keep him safely with them.
The book is absolutely fascinating and hard to stop reading. The world which has been built here is unlike any I have ever read about- the descriptions are incredible and it's really amazing to imagine. Persis is a strong character and I loved getting her perspective and learning more about her and her family. Justen was a harder character for me to like- he had his head stuck in the sand and was stubborn and obstinate. The tension of their budding relationship with the lack of their knowledge about who the other is and their roles got to be a bit overplayed, but I understand why. I remember thinking so many times, just tell him/her already!! But in the end, I was pretty happy with the way it all worked out. I could definitely see their relationship grow.
I really loved this book and think it is even better than the first! I can't wait to continue with this series!
