About the Author
Nabeel A. Riza, B.S. Illinois Institute of Technology, M.S., Ph.D. California Institute of Technology (Caltech), is Chair Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Department Head at University College Cork, Ireland. He is a 2007 IEEE Fellow. In 2001, Professor Riza received the ICO Prize from the International Commission for Optics and the Ernst Abbe Medal from the Carl Zeiss Foundation, Germany. He holds 44 U.S. patents.

These 'reviews' look pretty suspicious

This may be the greatest book ever, but I am suspicious when I see 4 absolutely glowing reviews, each giving 5 stars, and with no negative comments at all. Further, statements such as "I should know because of my own teaching and world leading research track record" raise a red flag to me. All 4 reviewers each have only 1 review posted - for this book - which they all happen to love. Coincidence? I don't buy it.

WoW! Great Book

Wow! This new book in photonics is exactly what I need now - a book easy to read and learn on my own as an engineering student. This book is NOT full of math, but actually has modern applications using light and the required math and physics to go with it. I really like the design oriented approach, completely unlike all other introductory text books in optics and photonics! The flow and building up of the book topics is also great, easing into the design problems using an amazing mix of optical, optoelectronic,and optomechanical technologies. It even has many problem sets and if you can't solve them, then there are answers at the back - great! Clearly written by an expert to teach young inventors the art of inventing with light - exactly what I want to be!

How to teach Photonics

Not just another book on Photonics, and I should know because of my own teaching and world leading research track record. This book is quite unusual because it complements basics with a large number of problems, design problems and detailed descriptions of experiments. An excellent starting point for students who pursue an engineering career in Photonics.
