The Magnificent 12: The Power, by Michael Grant

Michael Grant, author of the New York Times bestselling Gone books, shows his funny side in this fantasy-adventure series, which concludes with this fourth book.

Monty Python–like humor makes the Magnificent 12 perfect for fans of funny, action-filled series like Dan Gutman's Genius Files. The characters travel across the world, which also makes this series a great pick for readers and teachers with an interest in geography.

In The Magnificent 12: The Power, time is running out for Mack MacAvoy and the Magnificent Twel—er—Seven! In just a few short days, the Pale Queen will emerge from her earthly prison to destroy the world.

If Mack and the Magnificent Twel—er—Seven can convince the traitor Valin to switch sides, and then assemble the other four Magnifica, the Pale Queen won't stand a chance. It will all be over!

Maybe.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Tongue firmly planted in cheek, Grant sends a lad with a serious case of mediumness up against not only the minions of an ageless and evil Pale Queen but also a truly impressive list of phobias in this opener to the Magnificent 12 series. Prompted by the urgent warnings of an ancient, spectral mage (In just a few months the Dread Foe will be loosed in all her fury, all her rage, all her sphincter-clenching, heart-clutching, throat-gobbling, spit-drying, blood-freezing, bowel-loosening terror!), a murder attempt, and the arrival of plane tickets with a million-dollar debit card, Mack sets out for Australia. This is just the first leg of a mission to gather the other 11 supposed Magnifica necessary to defeat the evil that is about to escape 3,000 years of imprisonment. Hooking up with the first of his allies entails not only long, screaming drops into the ocean (Mack is powerfully thalassophobic) and down a shaft into a cave beneath Uluru (he is also awfully claustrophobic) but also battles with a variety of the queen’s magical warriors and an encounter with her daughter, Ereskigal—an insanely beautiful young sorceress with the eating habits of a female praying mantis. Grant fills out the historical backstory for this promising scenario in alternating flashback chapters, provides a sturdy supporting cast for his reluctant young hero, and keeps up the rapid pace from first page to last. A terrific start, with an elaborate website festooned with games and contests to ease the wait for sequels. Grades 5-8. --John Peters

Hilarious- Especially the footnotes
By Ashley
I basically finished this book in a day. It was great. The plot was fast paced and there weren't any stopping points! As with the rest of the series, the humor really shone through and I found myself laughing out loud for a large portion of it. Especially the footnotes. They were probably the highlight of the entire series (Go Fighting Pupfish!).
I love the characters. In particular, Mack and Golum whose imperfections make both of them insanely lovable.
It was amazing how Michael Grant somehow made such a silly book somehow profound, meaningful, and exciting all at the same time. He must truly be an amazing author.
This was such a nice and... refreshing... story. The ending was amazing. I felt that the conclusion to this series was so nicely well rounded and satisfying. That is a feeling that is always great to have and disappointing to lack.
All in all, this is an amazing book in an amazing series.

Even mama can't put it down!
By KLD
My (almost) 9 year old son and I have been reading this series together since the first book came out and without fail we finish each book in eager anticipation of the next. On the downside, it's our bedtime story and he NEVER wants to go to bed because he NEVER wants me to stop reading. And I have to admit, there has been more than one occasion on which we've read an extra chapter or two (or three) because mama just couldn't put the book down either. :D Can't wait for the next book!

*On a parental note, my son is definitely on the young side for the series in that it does include issues of boy/girl crush stuff, and attitudes more in line with the adolescent crowd, but nothing a two second conversation here and there can't deal with. That's why we read it together. :)

A really good series to read!
By Amazon Customer
My son has the other 3 books and read those last year. He hasn't read this one yet. He is reading the others again to refresh his memory on what has happened. I got this for his birthday this past May. out of all his presents (which he got some pretty cool presents) he was super excited to get this book since we've been waiting for it to finally come out...The series is a really good! I enjoyed reading them with him.
