Tessa's Story - *Small Spoiler Alert*

So, we've arrived at Tessa's story and what I presume is the end to the Barefoot series. This series was my first experience with Roxanne St. Claire's writing and I enjoyed the series overall. It dealt with many weighty topics that I haven't seen in recent contemporary romances. But Tessa is the character I struggled with the most throughout the series. Her struggles with infertility and her ex-husband's infidelity were heart-wrenching. However, her unrelenting determination to weed out all of her friends' innermost secrets got old very quickly. In this story, she manages to fall head over heels for a guy that has an insane amount of secrets. Given how she'd gone on and on in past stories about the importance of honesty and friends confiding in one another, it was hard for me to believe that she'd allow herself to get wrapped up in a guy that was setting off all of her *dishonesty danger* bells and whistles. And for all of her lectures on honesty, Tessa falls short on several fronts, but I won't spoil it! :-)
John also frustrated me. His back story is a tear-jerker and your heart had to go out to the guy because there were so many things that were out of his control throughout the course of this story. And yet, I still wanted him to have to work a little bit harder for his end of the HEA. There is a marriage of convenience plot in this story, but I couldn't get into it because the rationale that John was given for needing a wife didn't seem realistic.
In the end, we get a nice 'deus ex machina' solution to all of life's problems and while I always love a good HEA, I prefer when the hero/heroine put in the work to get there.
I spent most of the story frustrated by Tessa & John's actions and their situation and I found many aspects of the plot to be far-fetched. This wasn't the strongest story in the bunch but I would still recommend that folks read the series as a package deal.
***Small Spoiler Alert*** - I'll try not to give too much away but all of John's obvious and visible tattoos seemed like the WORST possible decision for someone in his predicament. If I'm remembering correctly he acquired these after his life changing event. And I also thought it slightly insane that he volunteered for a very public-type demonstration in order to help save the business. Both of these seemed to be reckless and inconsistent decisions given his current situation.

Passionate, Gripping & Intense!

"Barefoot By The Sea
Oh Finally.... YES! The fourth book in the Barefoot Bay series totally grabs you from the very first, deliciously sinful scene with "sex-on-two-legs" John Brown! And of course, our favorite quad of BFF's from the Barefoot Bay series - Lacey, Jocelyn, Zoe and the STAR of SEA, whose story I've so eagerly awaited - Tessa Galloway! Well, you will NOT be disappointed because this, in my opinion, is the BEST in the series!
But don't let John's outwardly "stunning" package fool you ;) The author, St. Claire, builds powerfully real, complex characters, quickly but methodically. In SEA, she works her magic yet again as she pens one of her most honorable, secretly anguished, yet confidently passionate (in every way) heroes to date, while he effortlessly steals into your heart. In SEA, he's desperately seeking to find a way to drown out the painfully dark memories of his past that he must keep deeply hidden while waiting to be reunited with his two small children taken from him in a plan to keep them protected from harm after having been forced into the witness protection program. The only obstacles, land a stable job and get married.
The all-natural, perfectly lovely Tessa, lives and breathes her organic farming and the entire process of life and nature. She cherishes spending time with her best friends who have become her family, helping to create their dream of Casa Blanca. Forever unsuccessful in her attempts to conceive a child with her former cheating, "now" ex-husband, Tessa has been relentlessly seeking alternate ways to have a baby on her own. She also despises secrets and seems to have an internal radar for when someone is hiding the truth. This makes for a slightly confusing but nevertheless dynamic and intensely passionate match between our two main characters. One that keeps you enthralled page after heart-pounding page.
St. Claire's finest of the series! I couldn't wait to get to the ending! Finished this in one sitting :) However, I highly recommend you start at the beginning of the Barefoot Bay series with Barefoot In The Sand, then Barefoot In The Rain, and Barefoot In The Sun. But even with that said, this book easily stands on its own. On the other hand, the pure enjoyment of pulling in such rich, diverse characters from the first three books and getting to know Tessa from these books as well, brings the world of Barefoot Bay alive in a way not nearly as profound without having read the complete set. Each one is so very compelling in their own way. I love this series! *Can't wait for the spin-off!
