From Booklist
Although John Charming looks human, he is part werewolf and genetically compelled to help keep the Pax Arcana, the shroud of secrecy that keeps most humans unaware of the supernaturals around us. Working as a bartender, he is fascinated by Sig, a six-foot-tall blond with something of the supernatural about her. It turns out she is a Valkyrie on the hunt for vampires responsible for the disappearance of several young women. John ends up teaming up with Sig and her cohorts: a psychic who looks like an old guy on steroids; his two Eastern European nephews; a cop, Choo, who is a professional exterminator; and Molly, a former Episcopal priest. In a saturated literary realm, James’ tale stands out for the gritty, believable world he builds, and provides a reason for the genre’s renewed strength. This is masculine urban fantasy in the vein of Jim Butcher and Mark del Franco. --Diana Tixier Herald

Review
"The Pax Arcana books are seriously good reads. Action, humor, and heart with unexpected twists and turns. If you are (like me) waiting for the next Butcher or Hearne--pick up Elliot James. Then you can bite your nails waiting for the next James, too."―Patricia Briggs, New York Times #1 bestselling author of the Mercy Thompson series

"Loved it! Charming is a giant gift basket of mythology and lore delivered by a brilliant new voice in urban fantasy. Elliott James tells stories that are action-packed, often amusing, and always entertaining."―Kevin Hearne, author of Hounded

"I loved this book from start to finish. Exciting and innovative, Charming is a great introduction to a world I look forward to spending a lot more time in."―New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire

"James's world is rich and complex and well worth diving into."―Richard Kadrey

"In a saturated literary realm, James's tale stands out for the gritty, believable world he builds... This is masculine urban fantasy in the vein of Jim Butcher and Mark del Franco."―Booklist

"Grab some snacks and settle back as splendid debut author James serves up a Prince Charming tale yanked sideways. John Charming comes from a prominent line of dragon slayers, witch-finders and killers trained by the Knights Templar, but now he has a problem: He has become what they hunt. James' reluctant hero faces threats and danger with a smart-ass attitude that keeps the narrative fast paced, edgy and amusing. Mark this name down -- you will undoubtedly be seeing more from James!"―RT Book Reviews

"This debut introduces a self-deprecating, wisecracking, and honorable-to-a-fault hero who can stand up to such established protagonists as Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden and Seanen McGuire's October Daye. Combining action and romance -- with an emphasis on action -- this is a top-notch new series opener for lovers of urban fantasy."―Library Journal (Starred review)

Very charming, but with teeth
By SciPhido
This was a great introduction into the world of the Pax Arcana. It starts out small and local, but you can see the edges of a really big playground for this story to go. I love all the characters and even though they inevitably fill some of the usual archetypes, their back stories are fun enough to enjoy them anyway. The idea of John Charming in the modern world is a really great vehicle to step into this alternate world of vampires and werewolves. I will definitely be following this series.

The Bitter Kingdom (Girl of Fire and Thorns Book 3), by Rae Carson

The third book in Rae Carson's award-winning The Girl of Fire and Thorns fantasy trilogy. Elisa, the seventeen-year-old sorcerer-queen, will travel into an unknown enemy's realm to win back her true love, save her kingdom, and uncover the final secrets of her destiny. Veronica Roth called The Girl of Fire and Thorns "intense, unique . . . definitely recommended."

Perfect for fans of Tamora Pierce and George R. R. Martin's style of sweeping and deeply satisfying epic fantasy, the third and final book in the trilogy takes the young queen on a journey more dangerous than any she has faced before. Elisa will stand before the gate of the enemy. And she must rise up as champion—even to those who have hated her—or her kingdom will fall. Full of sorcery, adventure, sizzling romance, and secrets that challenge everything she believes, this is a bold and powerful conclusion to an extraordinary trilogy. As USAToday.com proclaimed, "Rae Carson has proved she's a master and has shaken up the YA genre."

From Booklist
Carson brings her well-wrought trilogy (The Girl of Fire and Thorns, 2011, and The Crown of Embers, 2012) to a satisfying conclusion as Elisa, bearer of the godstone that brings her both power and extreme danger, searches for her true love, Hector, captive of Franco’s troops. Traveling with her trusted new maidservant as well as their prisoner, Storm, and the besotted Belen, Elisa must practice duplicity without falling victim to that of others. Romance, bravery, and suspenseful political wranglings drive and inform the characters on all sides. Readers new to the series should begin at its start, but, luckily, they’ll have the whole series ahead of them as Elisa races to free Hector and take her rightful place of power. Recommend: Here is the "the Good" and the "Don't think too much about this"
By Valerie
Despite my best efforts at self-control, telling myself to slowly savor it, I finished this last book in the series in a day. I just keep saying, "just one more chapter" and suddenly it was over. I was so sad to see this trilogy end, but I enjoyed every moment of it and I plan to enjoy every re-reading of these three books. The Fire and Thorns trilogy is one of those rare things -- a book series that has close to perfect pacing and realistic character growth combined with a truly engaging story. Modern YA books can be fraught with dangers, mostly for the reader. They can be cliche, mind numbing fillers that might possibly blind a reader with it's stupid story lines and "strong but yet somehow very silly heroines" (Yes, Bella Swan I am looking at you). Here is a line up of the good and the short list of the "don't think to much about this" parts of the series (warning: Spoilers):

Good:
- Elisa's character growth from a insecure, binge eating princess to a strong, capable and brilliant queen is both believable and emotional. I felt her surprise as she grew physically stronger, cheered for her through the struggles and loved that she became strong through both the strength of friends and her own ability to see her strengths. I also loved that she didn't magically become a super model or a ninja. She worked for every bit of her new found warrior skills and toned yet rounded body. She was willing to see herself truly and accept both her strengths and weaknesses. Her moments of self doubt are believable and not sappy and I didn't want to kill her by the end of the books because she has so much self doubt and "he can't possibly like me" and "woe is me" inner thoughts. Bonus.

-Hector. Sigh. Hector. Such an honorable man. I loved his strength of character, his self-control, his doubt, and his desire to both protect but honor and respect his queen and love. Hector sees Elisa deeply and respects her abilities. We need more men like him in literature. And in real life really. I loved the moments of interaction with Elisa and Hector and in The Bitter Kingdom, Hector's POV are well paced and provide perfect moments of insight into both Hector's mind and to what is happening outside of Elisa's experience.

- Belen, Mara, Red, Storm and all the other characters are well developed and as much fun to read as Elisa herself. Even minor characters are well thought out and are introduced perfectly into the story line. Elisa is a sensitive ruler who is willing to make the hard decisions mostly because she has the backing of her friends. She is not too proud a leader to listen and they are not too proud to give well placed wisdom.

- The story itself is compelling and the politics of war and peace are very well laid out into a believable ending. No simple happy ending is slapped onto this story. It is well developed politically, well fought and satisfying in the end.

-Thank you, Rae Carson for keeping the long looks between Hector and Elisa well paced and not over done. The looks did not diminish Elisa to a gawker and Hector to eye candy as can often be expected in YA books. Elisa is a girl with a plan and doesn't just wait around staring at broad shoulders for decisions to be made. This gives power to the Hector and Elisa scenes that leave tingles while keeping their relationship real without all the "misunderstandings" and silliness that tends to bog down and kill many potentially good books.

-Also thank you for not including insta-love, love triangles, or any of the other current romantic writing techniques that seem to be so popular now. Just because it is popular does not mean it is a good idea. While this series does include romance it is not a romance series. It is primarily a series about a girl's journey to defining herself on her terms not on others terms. In the end she learns that not even the Godstone defines her. She learns to be herself. All the other stuff - wars, ships, Godstones, etc. - is just the bonus part of her journey. It is the forge that shapes her into a strong woman. All that stuff is exciting and emotional and wonderful, yes, and keeps the reader interested. But nothing is really fluff. And nothing is instant or pops out of nowhere because the author was too lazy to do the hard work of making a real story.

"Don't think to much on this":
- The belly button Godstone. This does seem silly placement but I really don't know where a better place to put this would be. By the second book I was accepting of this minor detail though is still seemed jarring occasionally.

- The backstory on the Inviernos. Not as well fleshed out as I would like. One reviewer complained it was a bit colonialistic, harking to the days of Spanish conquistadors in the Americas. I don't know. It did seem a compelling mystery with a slight hint at a sci-fi kind of interaction. The idea that machines/science somehow were involved in combining and changing the DNA of Inviernos and Joyans hints at a time when the Joyans were more advanced that they are now. Somewhere along the line they lost that history and advanced science which considering their short history on the planet seems a bit questionable. In fact, it sounds a bit like Joyans dropped from the sky like space explorers but somehow it was blamed on the hand of God. Confusing. The whole who has a Godstone first, etc. got a bit confusing but I didn't find it irritated too much possibly because I was enjoying Elisa's journey too much. It was more of a hmmm, I don't know, that sounds dodgy . . . .oh but moving on. . .

-The underground mine adventure was a bit LOTR like in its execution. I don't mind people borrowing from other literature because it is a time honored tradition (and I love LOTR) but I kept pulling up LOTR scenes in my mind while reading these chapters. Not super distracting but still. . . I couldn't decide if I liked this or if it was distracting to THIS book and its story. . .

- From about 1/4 of the way through the first book till almost the end this is a non-stop adventure. It seems that if you think about it too much these people should fall down dead from exhaustion or sickness or something. They heal a bit fast, in my non-expert opinion, even non-Godstone people. They are kind of super human. They have their moments of "hey, we should probably rest cuz we haven't slept in days" but those moments seem a bit far apart considering some of the things they encounter. I liked it. But don't think about it too much.

- Be warned that people die in this series. While death is dealt with in a sensitive and realistic manner - not overdone or too gory, this is still a country at war and death is a part of that. Elisa, as a sensitive soul, struggles with the realities of war and death, especially in her name or for her protection and cause, and she asks questions of how to minimize the damage to people caught in the cross fire of war. And how to mourn those you love. This can be both a plus and a minus to some.

- Also, for readers who care, especially parents, be warned that there are references to birth control and hints at sex. These scenes are minor and subtly written but they are there. I couldn't decide if it would keep me from letting my daughter read it as a teen. Probably not because it could start a conversation and in fact I wish more scenes in other books were as subtle as these scenes. It is proof that subtle scenes can be more powerful than explicit scenes that share too much information. Miley Cyrus is proof of that. Too much info just ends up being a cultural joke. It's ok to have a little class.

Couldn't have asked for a better ending
By Lili's Reflections
This book blew me away. All expectations I had were blown out of the water completely. Rae Carson is a force to be reckoned with, no questions asked. While I'm sad to see this series go, I can honestly say that I am completely satisfied with the extensive and amazing journey Carson took me on.

One of my favorite things about Carson's writing is that it is not only beautiful, but there are also entertaining moments littered throughout the story. For a serious book full of life or death situations and decisions, I found myself laughing several times. Carson has this dry sense of humor that she inserts at the most random of times to lighten the mood of impending doom. One of my favorite examples of such humor was actually delivered from the hands of Elisa on page 60 of my ARC:

Mara's mare head-butts my lady-in-waiting in the chest. Grinning, Mara plants a kiss between her wide, dumb eyes, then murmurs something.
Have you named her? I ask.
"Yes! Her name is Jasmine."
I grimace. "But jasmine is such a sweet, pretty flower."
Mara laughs. "Have you named yours?"
"Her name is Horse."
She rolls her eyes. "If you want to get along with your mount, you have to learn each other's language. That means starting with a good name."
"All right." I pretend to consider. "What about Imbecile? Or Poops A Lot?"

Clearly, Elisa hates horses (much to everyone's amusement).

My favorite aspect of this story was Elisa. Her character arc in this final book can only be described as phenomenal. We watched an insecure girl grow to be a magnificent queen who understands the weight of her title. She's simply perfect. I can't even begin to describe how much I love Elisa solely because she's the way a young adult heroine should be. She's strong, independent, witty, and intelligent. And she is the type of character that I would want my kids to read about when I become a Mom way way in the future.

Hands down, what I loved most in regards to her character evolution in this book was the fact that she discovered that her overwhelming heart and heroism comes from herself. Her heroics come from her being someone who is bred to be a queen who knows how to properly wield her insane power as opposed to her reliance on God and her religion or supreme connection with her Godstone. To put it simply, Elisa discovered she was badass just because she was born to badass, not because her Godstone made her that way.

As always, Hector was amazing as well. Not only is he incredibly handsome and intelligent, but he finds himself in new, precarious situations that seem nearly impossible to get out of. But Hector is not only hot, but cunning, and he can fight his way out of nearly every situation. He proved to be a solid support system for Elisa in this book. To top it all off, there were even a few chapters in this book in his perspective. It was rather intriguing to be in the Commander's head, to see how he thinks and feels since he's so good at remaining expressionless at times. Now that I got a taste of his thought processes, I'm begging for more. I'd love a full story in his perspective. Oh well, one can dream!

The romantic plot line that took two books to build also exploded in this one. It was refreshing to see some characters be rewarded the way they should be because they were so pure and amazing. Everyone who got together in this one deserved each other. I can name three pairings off the top of my head and I found myself utterly satisfied with all of them, even if there were awkward and desperate moments throughout their road to happiness. The romance lover in me is utterly satisfied.

We met a new character in this story named Mula. Mula came along because of Elisa's righteous self and desire to do good, especially to all who deserve it. Mula, meaning mule, is a slave child from a free village that is half Invierno and half Joyan. She's got beautiful eyes, but she's looked down upon because of this. However, despite being tender and small, she's fierce and intelligent and perhaps the most loyal character I have ever seen. I loved every second of her being there, especially her intense attachment to Mara. Speaking of which, Mara and Belen were just as amazing as always. Watching their relationship progress was a very nice back plot. While they were essential to the plot, they didn't have personalities as powerful as Elisa, Hector, Mula, and Storm, but that doesn't stop them from being any less entertaining or imperative to the group's survival.

Storm, surprisingly, was among my favorite characters in this. He undergoes an extensive character arc that allows him to realize not only what it is to have true friends and allies, but what it's like to be committed to a cause worth dying for. We learn how to perfect the art of deception without lying through him. And we experience an insane amount of new world-building at his hands. I thought that this was perhaps the most extensive world-building I have ever seen prior to reading this novel. Carson found a way to make this world even more solid, even more magical, via Storm and the tales of the Invierno's world. Elisa and her crew traveled into the realm of the enemy and came out with more knowledge than you would have believed. It's absolutely breathtaking to realize how much thought went into creating such a complex world with conflicting mythologies and creation myths.

Storm also provided a great amount of the comic relief. Shocking, I know, but his inability to understand banter and certain human emotions because of the stone-cold logic he was raised with is nothing short of sheer hilarity. It's very easy to get attached to the man that was once the enemy, and I think that's a very nice feat for Carson to have pulled off.

In the end, I could not have asked for a better story. There is scheming, there is death, there are battles, and constant political maneuvering. There is beautiful attention to detail and twist after twist after twist. But there isn't as much brutality as one would expect. In hindsight, Elisa did get everything she wanted. Occasionally there would be an obstacle in her path obscuring an easy road to their goal, but they'd always end up there with little to no great damage to direct relations of hers. I think that, in reality, such things that Elisa achieved would be slightly harder to achieve.

However, with that in mind, this was one epic tale written by an absolutely brilliant author who deserves to be recognized by all. If you have not picked up this series yet, you simply must. It's one that cannot be ignored.

Rae Carson, it hurts to bid this beautiful world of yours adieu, but I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next.

Hector POV FTW absolutely amazing ending
By Robin Snyder
It would destroy me to have you just a little

The Bitter Kingdom is the perfect ending to the Girl of Fire and Thorns trilogy. Rae Carson has hit this one out of the park with the addition of a few new characters and the resurrection of other favorites from the first two books in the series. In addition there are scenes from Hector's POV with added so much depth and understanding to his character that I loved him even more, if that was possible.

The Bitter Kingdom starts almost immediately after Crown of Embers and Elisa is on the way to find and save Hector. With the help of Mara, Belén and Storm, Elisa travels into enemy territory to destroy the power source of the Invierne and save the man she loves. This is such an action packed story full of trials, obstacles and adventures. Just when one problem is solved another jumps into its place, the road to Inveirne and back to save Elisa's own kingdom is perilous.

Elisa really grows into herself on the journey and finds a special strength within herself from an unexpected place, she is not just the bearer of the Godstone, she is a great ruler in her own right. Elisa is strong and powerful in this book, brave and wickedly smart in her political maneuverings. More than once I was shocked and impressed at the strength she showed and the way she arranged all the alliances.

But there are plenty of tender moments shared between Elisa and Hector along the way to make your heart flutter a little.

"I am strong enough, man enough, to be subject to you."

Because that is one of the things I loved best from Crown of Embers and this book as well. The growing love between Hector and Elisa that seemed completely organic and `real' never forced or absolutely perfect.

I think sometimes when we find love we pretend it away or ignore it or tell ourselves we're imagining it. Because it is the most painful kind of hope there is.

The break out character in this story for me was Storm though. He stole the show a few times and I loved the bond that he formed with the group of travelers. He was a great addition to the story and sometimes in his innocence of sarcasm was too funny. He acts harsh and hard but he is fierce and became one of my favorite characters. Red is also a new favorite of mine, she was such a cute child and really added heart to the overall story.

Elisa is wise beyond her years; she has traveled so far from the Girl she was in GoFaT to the woman she is in The Bitter Kingdom. It is bittersweet to leave this series, but I loved how it is tied up with just enough opening for you to think about what will happen later in Elisa's life and kingdom and I left this world with a big smile on my face and happiness at the overall outcome and fates of those in the story.

Overall Series Ratings Were:
Girl of Fire and Thorns 3.5 stars
Crown of Embers 5 stars
The Bitter Kingdom 4.5 Stars

The General Theories of Inflation, Unemployment, and Government Deficits, by John Lindauer

Intellectual time lags exist in every field of science. So it is that even today one often hears the same old “common knowledge” nonsense and simplistic analysis from the early post-Keynesian era when students learned about some of the monetary and fiscal policies applicable to the U.K. and its institutions (Keynes) on the premise that they are also applicable to the U.S. Many are not. The result has all too often been inflation or massive unemployment that continues even though it could be quickly ended without fiscal changes or new laws.

This is a re-presentation of Professor Lindauer’s early ground-breaking work from the 1960s. It explains why not all Keynesian and neo-classical theory and monetary and fiscal policies are applicable to the unique structure and institutions of the United States and how the current United States’ malaise can be quickly ended - via a new approach to monetary policy, long ago explained by Lindauer and adopted by other countries.

It was while at Claremont as professor of economics that Lindauer first modeled the concept of aggregate supply and related it with the concept of aggregate demand to develop many of the macroeconomic theories presented herein and integrate them into the then-existing theories of inflation and unemployment.

Importantly in these days of high unemployment, the unique and quickly effective monetary policies he suggested years ago to end recessions and depressions without causing inflation or exacerbating government deficits are today immediately available without requiring fiscal changes or the passage of new laws and regulations.

Professor Lindauer’s other publications include “Land Taxation and Indian Economic Development” (with Sarjit Singh); various editions of his Macroeconomics series; and his early ground-breaking journal articles such as “Stabilization Inflation and the Inflation-Unemployment Trade-off.” A non-technical version of this work is available as Inflations, Unemployment, and Government Deficits: End Them. It is suitable for journalists, laymen, and lawyers serving as Federal Reserve governors.

Lindauer’s books have been translated into Japanese, Spanish, Portugese, Korean, Hindi, and Chinese and the policies his theories suggest implemented by central banks around the world. He has additionally served as a visiting professor at Sussex University, the University of California (SD), and Punjab University. He lives in Scottsdale and Chicago. His teaching is limited to lectures and visiting professorships.

About the Author

This is an updating of Professor Lindauer’s ground-breaking theories and their policy implications for economies such as that of the United States. They were first presented in the 1960s when he was Professor of Economics at CMC and the Claremont Graduate School.

They are re-presented here to explain how the current high levels of unemployment and governmental deficits in the United States can be quickly ended without the passage of new laws and regulations or the implementation of new spending levels and tax rates.

“General Theories and policies that cannot explain or cope with specific events are not general theories and policies and must be either discarded or improved.”

Larkin Wolff stopped at the computerized video panel, pressed a button and showed his ID. After a brief pause, a light blinked green and the gate swung open. He passed through onto a long winding driveway constructed of almost pure-white crushed stone. Many of his clients surrounded themselves in acres of insulating property, but seldom had Larkin seen anything as peaceful and idyllic as the emerald fields, stately oaks and copses of weeping willows that lined the banks of a meandering creek.

Despite the sense that time stood still here, his skin tingled with a hint of warning. He'd built a career in high-tech surveillance, electronic security systems and even sophisticated cyber protection. Along the way, he'd developed what his siblings and cousins laughingly called a keen Spidey sense.

Larkin went along with the joke. Growing up on Wolff Mountain had made a man of him, and despite being a middle child with a troubled past, confidence was woven into his DNA. But something about today's meeting made him itchy. And he didn't know why.

At long last, he pulled up in front of the house. The surrounding real estate, sprawling outside of Nashville proper, was home to country music legends, recording industry moguls and anyone else to whom money was no object. The two-story Georgian redbrick lady in front of him sat gracefully on the land, her many windows glistening in the afternoon sun.

Larkin grabbed a notebook and his laptop and got out, inhaling the scent of roses and freshly turned dirt. He had grown up in what many would call a modern-day castle, but this serene facade impressed even him.

Much of his work took him to city high-rises and aesthetically bland corporate headquarters. Today's setting would be a pleasant change. The summons had been a bit odd and nonspecific. But perhaps he was imagining trouble where there was none. Families with lots of money often felt the need for protection. He should know.

Ringing the bell shaped in the head of a lion, he waited calmly. For a man in his occupation, patience was a prerequisite.

Suddenly, the large door swung inward and a woman stood before him. She was small, barely reaching his shoulder. Barefoot and wearing denim overalls cut off at the knee, the fabric neatly cuffed midthigh, she looked about eighteen. Her untamed hair was the color of corn silk, but it fuzzed out in a mass of unruly waves that almost overpowered her narrow face. Wary green-and-amber eyes surveyed him, even as her pointed chin lifted slightly. "Hello," she said, her voice low and melodic.

Larkin gave her a brief smile, trying not to notice that the thin white T-shirt beneath the overall bib seemed to indicate she was braless. The curves of her generous breasts peeked out the sides. "My name is Larkin Wolff," he said. "I'm here to see Ms. Winifred Bellamy. She's expecting me."

Winnie felt a sudden need for either smelling salts or a quick belt of whiskey. It had been a long, long time since a virile, handsome man had crossed this threshold. "I'm Winifred," she said, looking him up and down. "But please call me Winnie." She stepped back and waited for him to enter, leading him to the nearby salon.

It was one of her favorite rooms. She had furnished it simply but comfortably, and the small baby grand in the corner was one she played when there was no one around to hear. Audu-bon prints graced the walls, and a pale green silk Persian rug, enormous in length and width, cushioned her feet as she sank her toes into the pile. Its intricate pattern reminded her that someone, somewhere, had labored over its creation for days, months, years. Winnie admired such single-minded devotion.

She curled into an armchair and waved her guest to the sofa. "Thank you for coming so quickly, Mr. Wolff."

He shrugged. "Your note indicated some urgency."

"Yes." Fear and anxiety clenched her stomach, but she fought them back. She was not a victim. She was in charge. "I suppose you read the article I enclosed?"

He nodded with a grimace. "I did."

Winnie Bellamy hated being robbed. Money was one thing…she had plenty of it. But when Arista Magazine listed her as one of the twenty wealthiest women in America, Winnie lost something she valued more than anything else…her privacy…and her anonymity.

She placed her hands on the arms of the chair, deliberately displaying an air of confidence. "Where do we start?"

Larkin Wolff was not sure what she wanted from him. So he decided to push a little. If part of his line of questioning had more to do with sheer curiosity than actual necessity, well, that was his business. He settled back and drummed his hands on his knees. "Tell me about you and your family…. How did you end up on that wealthiest-women list?"

Ordinarily, he'd have opened his computer by now and would be making notes. But he didn't want to miss the nuances of expression that danced across Winnie's open-book face. Her posture and graceful movements projected dignity. She carried herself regally, as if she had spent her formative years at exclusive Swiss finishing schools. And perhaps she had.

She took a moment to almost visibly compose her thoughts before speaking. Her demeanor seemed pensive. "My parents had me when they were well into their mid-forties. The pregnancy was somewhat of an embarrassment to my mother. She and my father were academics, both with IQs off the charts. My 'accidental' conception made them look human, I think, and I'm sure they hated that."

"They are deceased?"

"Yes. Both had advanced degrees in anthropology and archaeology. Their careers and their marriage were spent crisscrossing the globe. They were much in demand as speakers at colleges, universities and basically anywhere that could rustle up the money to cover their exorbitant fees."

"And that's how they amassed a fortune?" He lifted a skeptical eyebrow.

"No, of course not. The money was always there. My mother's great-great-grandfather invented and patented some kind of engine during World War I, and my father's family owned a large publishing conglomerate in London."

"Where were you during all their travels?"

Trained to note small tells, he witnessed the brief moment her hands clenched on the chair arms before relaxing again deliberately. "I had governesses, tutors, semesters at boarding schools, an Ivy League education. Everything a child could possibly need."

"Except parents to tuck you in at night." The compassion sparked by her terse narrative was born of his own dark memories.

"No," she said quietly. "I didn't have that. But there are worse problems, I assure you."

"Indeed. But having grown up myself without a mother and with a father who was all about business, I sympathize, Ms. Bellamy."

"I'd appreciate it if you would call me Winnie. Ms. Bellamy is too formal and, quite honestly, I hate the name Winifred. It makes me sound like an old-maid librarian."

He grinned. "You're far from that."

"I had you investigated, Mr. Wolff." Her cheeks were pink, and he was pretty sure his implied compliment had flustered her.

"I've got no problem there. You need to be able to trust who's doing your security work."

"Why is your firm called Leland Security? I would think using the Wolff family name would draw in clients."

"I have all the work I can handle, and besides."

"Yes?" Her steady gaze dissected him.

"Well, in the beginning it was because I was a typical middle child. I didn't want to be overshadowed by my older brother or my cousins. Wanted to make my mark in the world. That kind of thing. Thankfully, I outgrew such posturing long ago, but I discovered in the meantime that if I was going to be handling discreet, sensitive matters, it made sense to fly under the radar. Leland is my middle name."

"Tell me, Mr. Wolff."

"Larkin," he insisted.

"Larkin, then. Are you available for a large job? Do you have the manpower? The openings in your schedule?"

"Before I answer that, I have one last question of you. How and when did your parents die? Are you fearful for your personal safety because of the article? Is that it?"

She pulled her knees to her chest and wrapped her arms around them. The childlike pose did nothing to detract from her natural beauty. Without a speck of makeup on her lightly freckled, ivory-skinned face, she reminded him of a young Meryl Streep. "My parents have nothing to do with this," she said tightly. "They were killed in a tsunami. At that time they were living with native peoples on one of the more remote islands of Indonesia. They never stood a chance."

"Were their bodies recovered?"

"Eventually. But there wasn't much left to bury. I had them cremated and flown home. DNA testing confirmed their identities. Lawyers aren't willing to turn over a billion-dollar fortune without definitive proof."

The horror of her tale was in no way minimized by her flat, deliberately emotionless recounting. Larkin had his own demons to battle, but here was a woman who knew what it meant to suffer.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly, wishing there was something he could do to ease the tension from her slight frame.

"It's been almost a decade," she said. She stood up and wandered the room, pausing to run a hand over the top of the piano. It was a loving gesture…sensual…appreciative. Without warning, his body reacted. He'd never met a woman less inclined to accentuate her looks, and yet Winnie Bellamy fascinated him.

"Do you play?" he asked.

When she looked up, it almost seemed as if she had forgotten his presence, so lost in the past as she was with memories. "For myself…on occasion."

"I'd like to hear you sometime," he said.

She pursed her lips. "Probably not."

"Why?"

She stared at him in silence, not deigning to answer his question. Perhaps she thought him impertinent. She turned and crossed the room to a small antique secretary. Pulling a silver skeleton key from her pocket, she unlocked the center drawer and extracted something he couldn't see.

When she returned to his side, she laid a piece of paper on the table at his elbow. His jaw dropped. Though his own personal financial portfolio was in the high seven-figure range (and that was not counting the portion of Wolff Enterprises that would be his in the future), it wasn't every day that someone tossed a check at him for half a million dollars. Though Winnie had signed the document, the pay to line was blank.

He picked it up gingerly. "What's this?"

She sat back down, this time crossing her legs and kicking one foot lazily. "That should cover everything I need from you. But I have to know that I am buying your utmost discretion. Nothing you learn about me or my estate can be shared."

There it was again, that tingling Spidey sense. He dropped the check. "I'm not a priest, a doctor, a shrink or, thank God, a lawyer," he said gruffly. "If you're involved in something illegal, I'll go straight to the police. You can buy my loyalty and discretion, but not a blind eye. Sorry."

She blinked, her pale lashes only a shade darker than her hair. "Wow. You shoot from the hip, don't you?"

"I won't take your money under false pretenses."

Winnie was not threatened by Larkin Wolff's displeasure. Instead, she was fascinated. When it was his turn to stand and prowl, she studied him. He was built like a baseball player, long and lean and athletic. Though his looks were pleasing, he wouldn't be called handsome. There was too much of a permanent frown line between his eyebrows and an unmistakable bump on the bridge of his nose that indicated a past break.

His eyes were a shade of steel-blue that could burn or chill given his mood. The man's body was a walking testament to working out, his biceps flexing beneath a thin dress T-shirt. He had removed a navy sport coat, and clad only in the oatmeal-colored knit, he looked powerful and intensely masculine. His short wiry hair was mostly black with a few strands of premature gray.

She knew from her files that he was barely thirty. But his visage and demeanor made him seem much older. "Sit down, Larkin. I can assure you that I am a law-abiding citizen." She was shocked to hear herself ordering him around—shocked even more when he obeyed.

His gaze locked with hers in unspoken challenge.

She sighed. "Since that article came out, I have been inundated with phone calls, packages and more than a few unwanted visitors. At one point, we even had to call in the bomb squad. Fortunately, it was a false alarm, but I can't endanger my staff's safety and well-being. I've received no less than six proposals of marriage, one of those from a convicted sex offender serving prison time. My personal email account was hacked last week, and the perpetrator sent pornographic images to everyone in my contact list. This has to stop…and soon."

Larkin leaned forward, his elbows on his knees. "I can take care of all of that for a fraction of your big check. Why so urgent? What aren't you telling me? Stuff like this blows over in a matter of weeks. New gossip arrives, fresh meat scents the air. In a month or two, I'm pretty sure you'll have nothing to worry about."

Swallowing the lump in her throat, she clasped her hands in her lap to keep them from shaking. "Even if I am overreacting, I have the right to hire you and ask for certain things…correct?"

There was that scowl again. "Of course you do. But part of my job is to advise you. And throwing away your money isn't necessary."

"I won't be throwing away a cent," she said, her throat raw with emotion. "For starters, I need you to do the obvious. Install whatever we need to guard our perimeter. And I want you to contract your people to be on duty 24/7 for an indefinite period of time."

"And deal with phone and internet issues."

"Yes."

"What else?"

She hesitated. Everything she had read about this man inspired confidence. But trust was not easily won for someone in her position. "I need you to fill out the check and accept it before we continue."

His eyes iced with suspicion. "I've told you. It's too much."

"Then I'll write two checks…one to Leland Security and one to a charity of your choosing. I want half a million dollars' worth of protection. Can you or can you not provide that for me?"

"Has anyone ever called you paranoid?"

She swallowed hard. "I don't imagine a man like you understands what it means to be physically vulnerable. Women are stronger than men in many ways, but we will always face the threat of an attacker's size and strength and come out on the short end."

"Have you felt physically threatened since the article ran?"

Love for Larkin
By TrishJ823
This was such a touching story of two damaged souls in need of each other but not willing to admit it. I have loved all of the Wolff men and their one sister/cousin. I can't wait for the conclusion to this Saga in October but it will be bittersweet since it will be the end.

Great read
By mrs.ia fever
I just love the Wolff men. They all have a "story" behind their emotional angst. As for Winnie and Larkin, they are such an unlikely couple, but you can tell right from the beginning of the book that they have a lot of chemistry between them. Both are such strong characters, and Winnie's shelter project brought them together early in the book. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
