No Place Like Oz: A Dorothy Must Die Prequel Novella (Dorothy Must Die series Book 1), by Danielle Paige

There's a new wicked witch in Oz—and her name is Dorothy. This 125-page digital novella is a fresh and edgy sequel to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and the prequel to the sassy new epic adventure Dorothy Must Die. No Place Like Oz, by debut author Danielle Paige, is a compellingly original reimagining of a beloved classic and is perfect for fans of Cinder by Marissa Meyer, Beastly by Alex Flinn, and Wicked by Gregory Maguire.

Dorothy clicked her heels three times and returned to Kansas. The end . . . or was it? Although she's happy to be home with Aunt Em, Dorothy has regretted her decision to leave Oz ever since. So when a mysterious gift arrives at her doorstep on her sixteenth birthday, Dorothy jumps at the chance to return to the glittering city that made her a star.

Setting off for the Emerald City, Dorothy is eager to be reunited with her friends: the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion. But she soon discovers that in the time she's been gone, Oz has changed—and Dorothy has, too. This time, the yellow brick road leads her down a very different path. And before her journey is through, Dorothy will find that the line between wicked and good has become so blurred she's not sure which side of it she's on.

Heartstopping Prequel
By Miss K. Gore
Oh. My. Word. There are no words to explain just how amazing this novella is. When I first heard of Dorothy Must Die I thought hmm that sounds interesting. With me being a massive musicals fan I have, of course, watched The Wizard of Oz a gazillion times and memorised every word. So anything to do with Wizard of Oz I instantly was interested in. Dorothy Must Die was on my radar of a 'I want to read... eventually... at some point." When seeing there was a prequel I decided to get it to get a taste of what Dorothy Must Die would be like. After reading it is now a "I must have this book... like seriously... RIGHT NOW."

No Place Like Oz gives us a backstory and a sequel all at the same time. Dorothy has returned to Oz after her adventure when she was younger. Now 16 years old all she wanted was to get back to Oz and now she's there with her beloved aunt and uncle. But as they start to have more and more disagreements Dorothy starts to change... and it will impact not only her family but the whole of Oz.

No Place Like Oz was so much better than I ever expected. I love that we get a kind of sequel from the original Wizard of Oz story. In a lot of books that have a new take on a already known story it tends to take the viewpoint of retelling the story in a different, more magical or supernatural or more modern way. One thing I adored about this one is that it doesn't. It take The Wizard of Oz having already happened and gives you a "What happened next" story.

I completely expected this to be a very quick short read with it being a novella but I felt like it was more like a full story. I have a very love-hate relationship with novellas. I love getting the back story for books but I feel like there isn't a whole arc of the story because as soon as you get into it and are dying to find out what happens it's over. But that's what novellas do. That's their job. No Place Like Oz is more like a whole full-length novel. It may not be in length but it feels like it as there is everything you want in a novel included in it. You have the characterisation, the story arc. Everything is there.

Get ready to see a whole new side of Dorothy. From the original story I always liked Dorothy. I hate her now! Dorothy has changed from the innocent girl she once was who only wanted to go home. She has grown up and I really felt more and more dislike for her the further I read. She is selfish and pretty bitchy right throughout the book. She's just awful.

I am completely surprised that Dorothy Must Die will be Danielle's first novel as just from this prequel novella you can really feel the talent, passion and love for her writing. I was completely drawn in right from the start and I seriously couldn't put it down. I am a fan for life now. I cannot wait for her work.

No Place Like Oz was incredible and I don't even see it as a novella... to me it's a book. It has everything you could possibly want in a book. It completely sucked me in and took me on this journey to Oz. It made me fall back in love with the characters I loved in The Wizard of Oz as well as introducing me to new ones. Ozma... I adore her! It also makes you rethink everything you ever thought about the characters. I am so beyond excited to get my hands on Dorothy Must Die. It's going to be absolutely phenomenal and breathtaking if the prequel is anything to go by. I went ahead and pre-ordered as soon as I finished this. If you are curious about Dorothy Must Die then I urge you to go and read this prequel. It will make Dorothy Must Die one of your most anticipated books of 2014... I know it is mine. March cannot get here fast enough. The countdown begins!

A Decent Novella
By Jon (Scott Reads It!)
No Place Like Oz is the ambitious prequel to Dorothy Must Die, which is one of my anticipated books of 2014 by far. I think readers should definitely pick up No Place Like Oz before reading Dorothy Must Die because it's a quick read and it readers a good taste of what Dorothy Must Die will be like. After reading No Place Like Oz, I'm definitely not as excited for Dorothy Must Die as I was when I had initially heard about it on Epic Reads' Tea Time. No Place Like Oz is overly ambitious and it didn't quite fill me with wonder like the 1939 movie and the original novels did.

The Dorothy that Danielle Paige has created in this novella is extremely petulant and she was constantly on my nerves. I understand that's she fed up with regular life and she craves something more, but that doesn't give her the right to act nasty and obnoxious towards Uncle Henry and Auntie Em. Dorothy doesn't want to be a farmgirl, she wants to live in Oz, she wants to live in a world with magic and adventure. I really understand how Dorothy feels, the feeling that you want more than this from life, but Dorothy truly needs to get over herself. There becomes a point where being cranky, throwing tantrums, and thinking you know best for everyone else is enough. I seriously applaud Aunt Em and Uncle Henry because I really don't know how they manage to deal with Dorothy because nothing they do for her is ever enough.

No Place Like Oz is pretty predictable and I wasn't all that eager to find out what happened next. I really wish there was more cameos from my favorite Ozian characters, I think readers of Baum's original novels will appreciate this e-Novella the most due to the appearance of Ozma, the renowned ruler of Oz. Besides the appearance of Ozma who I loved in this book, No Place Like Oz isn't all that interesting, it merely sets up Dorothy Must Die. Honestly, if you don't read this novella, you're not missing out on much because barely anything happens throughout the course of this novella.

While I'm not overly enthusiastic about No Place Like Oz, it was entertaining and a nice change of pace from all of the dystopian books I've been reading. No Place Like Oz isn't what one would expect from a Wizard Of Oz "sequel/retelling" , it's way more angsty and unappealing. Hopefully, Dorothy Must Die is stronger in plot and development than No Place Like Oz was.

Loved it
By Michelle Parsons
What could have happened to Dorothy to make someone want her to die?

I couldn't wait for this prequel to come out when I heard about the book over the summer and saw the prequel was going to be released sooner I was SO EXCITED. It did not disappoint, I could not put this book down. (I love when that happens)

I have only read one book about Wizard of Oz and that was more what happened before Dorothy. This was what happened 2 years after she left Oz but it's not the sweet Dorothy you remember something isn't right.

Dorothy has a grand return when she came back from Oz, the town thought it was miracle she survived the twister but Aunt Em and Uncle Henry didn't want her sharing what they say was a dream with anyone else. As the hoopla of her return starts to wind down Dorothy realizes as much as she missed Kansas she really misses Oz. Kansas is boring, dull and she has no friends, not like the friends she had in Oz. So on her 16th birthday she makes a wish and that's when it all starts to take a turn for the worst.

WOW this was amazing. I loved seeing Dorothy and how she was after leaving Oz. At first I really felt bad for her, my heart broke that she wasn't able to tell anyone about her trip to Oz and how she lost her only friend. I got over that really quick once she started turning into a MAJOR bitch. The world was great and it has the same feel as the original Oz it really was like stepping back into a world we all know and love. It gave me quite the shock at the end it took me a day to recover and I'm not sure I am over it.

This is yet another Novella that was packed with so much it was like reading a full length novel and it has such great detail and world build I can't wait to read Dorothy Must Die.

I gave No Place Like Oz by Danielle Paige 5/5 stars it was a great telling of Oz and the outcome at the end only make me eager to read more. Danielle Paige is a fantastic author she was able to create such an amazing story that is so interesting and original it makes me wish it were release day for Dorothy Must Die already. (April 2014)
