Fun for Kids but Not Real Life Solutions to Bullying.

Sammy is a kid who cares about others and wants to protect them. When a baby rubber ducky come under attack from a trio of bullies, Sammy dons his cape (a blanket tied around his neck) and sets about righting the wrongs!

This was a fun little book for my two (almost three) year old grandson, Jonathan. He sat with his eyes big, turning the pages for me as the story progressed, then asked me to read it again when we were through. It was a hit, for sure!

As the Grandma reading this story I had some "huh?" moments and I'd recommend parents read this before sharing it with their kids because some of Sammy's solutions for getting rid of the bullies might not coincide with what you'd teach in your home. For example, making a turkey sandwich and throwing it far away for a bear to chase, or getting a juicy steak for the bulldog bully to chase are not "lesson" solutions for your kids, and might be construed as bribery to stop the bullying. If you're hoping for "real life" solutions to bullying, this isn't the book for you. But if you just want a fun read for the kidlettes, this might be a good one!

One real issue I have with this book is that after the story there are links, clearly designed to appeal to kids, that take you to Amazon to buy the next book, or books similar to this one. There are also links where you can click to download additional fun materials, but those links don't work from the Kindle app on my iPad. This could definitely cause some disappointment for your kids.

I don't see those things as deal breakers, and I'm not trying to read more into the story than there is, but I'm just mentioning them to give you a heads up about what to expect.

Great Message, Great Artwork, and Funny to Boot!

This is a humorous, short children's book that is great for bedtime!

It is about a little boy named Sammy who defends his friends from bullies and keeps his family safe. The best part is that he does so without the use of violence! Definitely a keeper for me.

I am especially fond of the great artwork and the message behind the story. Bullies have always been and will always be a problem in everyone's childhoods. With this type of story available to all parents, at least children have that glimmer of hope in their lives.

An action-packed, and fun romp of a story

White Plume mountain was a rite of passage for gamers such as myself years ago, and Paul Kidd has a grand time bringing us all back home again in his new novel. His book has all the makings of classic fantasy. A rugged hero to root for, an evil villain to boot, and a sassy Faerie sidekick to make us wonder how come our games didn't have pixies like her! The mountain scenes are well done, and even though some of the other interesting rooms were missed. You do get a feeling of Deja-Vu reading them after all of these years. A fun read, and enjoy it!

Why do I like this book?!?

Paul Kidd is a comic book writer, and it shows. The author doesn't spend a lot of time establishing mood, or world-building, or even using depth in his characterization. He concentrates on action and witty banter, like the game the book is drawn from.
The characters are mildly archetypical, with vague and unrealistic motivation; the villains are of the Trying To Take Over The World and Insane Wizard With A Plan varieties, and there's even commentary from characters internal to the story parodying the aspects of "heroism" found in everyone's earliest stabs at playing the game. There are humorous moments related to the plot, but some of the tropes of gaming itself are the butt of the joke in a number of scenes.
The characters unashamedly spout anachronisms at every turn-- you can almost see the players pausing between handfuls of Cheetos to rattle off a modern idiom or two. The faerie is like something out of a Boris Vallejo ilLUSTration: there's a point where the word "naked" is used to describe her condition twice in a matter of about five sentences. When she's not nude, she's busy trying to assemble an outfit which is as suggestive as is possible for an adolescent male to imagine-- which is the whole point of the joke, obviously.
The book adamantly refuses to apologize for its lack of modern fantasy acoutrements such as rich motivations and character complexity... and bludgeons its way through to win your heart regardless. If you seek serious fantasy fare, or mindless Dragonlance drivel, look elsewhere.
This book is beer and pretzels-type fare, with all the swashbuckling and lack of seriousness that implies... but unless I miss my mark, Paul Kidd has also embedded the book with some serious commentary on the D&D game itself, and how it has evolved in the years since its infancy.
In fact, unless I'm ascribing more genius to the work than Kidd intended, the book acts as a deconstruction of legacy D&D campaigns and even the modern angst-ridden White Wolf-style gaming heroes... and it works!

Newsflash! Greyhawk book actually a good read...

I was dubious of another Greyhawk book after "Against The Giants", but this has proven a worthy purchase.
Kidd's style is light, packed with action, wit and... it works!
The characters of the Justicar and Escalla are excellent. You get a great sense of their personalities, far more so than most books in the D&D genre. The supporting characters are also particularly well fleshed out (Polk the Teamster, with his adventuring "wisdom" is a delight).
It's not often I'll laugh out loud when reading, but it happenned a couple of times during this book, a testament to Kidds' style and handing of the characters.
It's not all humor however, some great dungeon-crawling is mixed in and overall the blend of action and humour results in a book that is well worth a read.

I can't believe that a 130+ year old book translated to English was good enough to keep me up half the night but this brilliant old gem did. The story features the height of late 1800 steam technology and a couple of heros who want to circumnavigate the earth in 80 days to win a bet. The characters are surprisingly likable and the action is just GREAT. Put this at the top of the queue for great free reads and you will get a wonderful easy read and a brilliant view of the world.

This is a classic that I decided to re-read. While it's story line and plot twists are definitely 19th century, it's still a fun read and blows away the latest movie (which is a tragic lie to have taken this name) and the 60s classic movie (but a bit less; and I still love that movie).

This would be a great book for tweens to read with a map and a time-line at their side to learn about the places on earth, the time it took to get there and the route around the world.

Great classic book and definitely written to reflect the time period of the author which makes it doubly interesting. Fun to note the difference between the book and the movies made from it, too. And as usual, the book is better than the movies. Once you read this book, it definitely makes you want to read other Jules Verne stories and to learn about Jules Verne himself.
