trivial, poorly written guide to film master

The great English filmmaker has been the subject of numerous wonderful books through the years--volumes by Spoto, Durgnat, the great interview book by Truffaut. This tiny, modest work--more like a little promotional folder you might find at a film tribute on the "for free" table--certainly does not deserve to be placed among those earlier creditable efforts. With little to say on the subject and a painful prose style with which to say it, this book is reminiscent of a collegiate fanzine. The publisher claims it has aimed the book at the "MTV Generation" by which I get the impression they mean readers having the attention span of three minutes--Beavis goes to the movies?-- which is just a little less than this short book takes to absorb. The book's value, if any, is for someone wanting a convenient little listing of Hitch's works for crosschecking their video collection perhaps. I will close by saying something positive about the book--at under 5 dollars it is certainly the cheapest book on Hitchcock.

Ideal reference source

I do some writing and lecturing on film and find this book to be an ideal reference source. There are succinct and to-the-point plots, subtext and 'making of' sections for each of Hitch's 50 odd films. It's author Paul Duncan has fitted it all in considering the size of the book, and at this price you can't go wrong! The author has also peppered the text with his own opinions and has the nerve to rate the films - quite accurately pointing out that Hitchcock made bad films as well as good ones. I can see how this irreverent attitude to Hitchcock could get up the noses of some academics, but I found it refreshing. His opinions, I find, are also good starting points for discussions about Hitchcock. At the back, there is a reference section where Paul Duncan gives his opinion about other reference books - something I have not seen done elsewhere.

About the Author

Cameron Hughes is a professional software developer with over fifteen years of experience. He is a staff programmer/analyst at Youngstown State University and a software epistemologist for Ctest Laboratories. Tracey Hughes is a senior software and graphics programmer at Ctest Laboratories where she develops information and epistemic visualization software. Both Cameron and Tracey Hughes are long time robot enthusiasts with a collection of over 100 robots. They have sponsored and participated in local robot competitions and robot programming workshops for the Lego NXT and RS Media platforms through their local ACM chapter. Cameron and Tracey are the authors of seven books on software development, multithreaded programming, and parallel programming in C++.

Bob Kramer has been a full-time Computer Science Professor at Youngstown State University. Bob's research interests include using Lego robotics as a tool to teach computer science concepts, as well as the development and extension of programming tools for Lego robots. He has helped extend the nxtOSEK environment to enable C++ programs to execute on the NXT platform, and has developed an interface for a third-party sensor in the LeJOS environment. Bob Kramer has used Lego robotics to teach basic programming concepts in summer enrichment programs for high school students. He has spoken at numerous workshops about robot design and pedagogical uses of robots.

Trevor Watkins is a network communications and system integrations specialist. He is currently the Technology Manager at the Wadsworth Public Library, where he designs, integrates, and administers all aspects of the library's network and information systems. Trevor is an adjunct professor in the Computer Science and Information Systems Department at Youngstown State University, where he teaches high level programing languages and computer networks. He has been a robot hobbyist for over 20 years with the past 5 years dedicated to NXT-Mindstorms, Vex and Arduino-based robot kits, and consults with local high school robotics teams.

✔ Outstanding Oveview of How to Do It

This book is an extensive overview of how to use the technology of Lego MINDSTORMS and Bluetooth. This book is not a trivial, very high-level discussion. If you are looking for a quick read, with just a sketchy overview, this is not the book for you. Instead, TEAMS OF ROBOTS has a LOT of sophisticated material; I suspect some parts of this book may be confusing for beginners in this technology.

I found the writing to be clear, and the book well-designed. I did not see any editing or obvious formatting errors. Here are some highlights:

♦ Very detailed illustrations throughout the book. For example, the picture of the puma robotic arm with effectors
♦ Explanation of Bluetooth technology, along with common bluetooth-enabled devices.
♦ I especially liked the electronic overview explaining the frequency and antenna patterns of Bluetooth
♦ Helpful screenshots showing how to install specific software--for example, Figure 8-8 illustrates how to update Eclipse firmware
♦ Check-out the BRON Crime Scene (CSI) team!

Appendix A includes standard JAVA classes for leJOS Bluetooth
Appendix B illustrates and discusses the Bluetooth Robotic-Oriented Network (BRON) team members

✔ This is a very impressive work--lots of detail, lots of excellent illustrations and instructions.
