A Small Town Romance, Told In A Beautiful and Sensitive Manner

Competent and professional, Dr. Emma Bradshaw is well respected in the rural community of Tullibaird where she serves as a doctor and where she was born and brought up. The locals all know about the trauma she faced as a teen - dealing with the fall out of a teenage romance gone wrong and her father's premature death of cancer. Yet they've nothing but admiration for the way she clawed herself back from the brink of despair by sheer hard work, becoming a doctor and serving her local community with skill and dedication. She lives a quiet life in Tullibaird now, with ne'er a breath of scandal attached to her name. But the arrival of the leather clad biker, Dr. Nick Rudd, to join the clinic where Emma works, threatens to crumble her confident facade. Dr. Rudd is none other than Nick Malone, the town's erstwhile bad boy who left Emma to face a traumatic situation all alone at the time when she needed him most. Nick is adamant that he's come back for Emma as he always said he would. She on the other hand, having built a life for herself after her world fell apart, doesn't want to revisit the past and her hidden heartache.

So can this couple ever heal the wounds of the past and move on into the future of which they'd once dreamed enthusiastically? Or is it really all over?

This is a small town romance with the feel of community involvement and mostly endearing if flawed characters. Just normal human beings, with all their faults and failings. It's also a medical romance, which, I believe, was originally intended for Harlequin. Well, it's very much their loss. This book tackles the issue of how teenage affairs can take a a tragic turn, leaving scars on the psyche.

An emotional read which will leave you with both a tear in your eye and a smile on your face and maybe even a couple of sighs along the way. Suzanna Ross presents Emma's agony in a beautiful and sensitive manner. Although it tackles a sad subject, it also shows, as all good romance fiction does, how the healing power of love can work its magic.

At the start of Konrath's brisk and breezy sixth Jack Daniels mystery, the guilt-ridden Chicago cop, who's attending the funeral of a loved one, takes a call from Alexandra Kork, the sadistic psychopath who did in the loved one at the end of 2008's Fuzzy Navel (I checked the Weather Channel.... It's raining in Chicago. That's appropriate, don't you think? Funerals on sunny days seem so wrong). Barred from the official hunt for Kork because she's personally involved in the case, Daniels soon finds herself on the wrong side of the law with few of the usual resources to call on. Meanwhile, the wily Kork, who's stopped counting her victims (after 50 they blur), strews bodies over a wide area as part of a scheme to lead Daniels to a slow and painful death. Konrath leavens the violence with offbeat humor, including a feces-throwing monkey in love with a cashmere sweater. The slam-bang ending is sure to satisfy series fans. (July)

Q: Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Joe: Years ago I wanted to be a model for husky pants. But then, when I was barely a teen, they stopped making husky sizes.

Damn those clothing designers for shattering my dreams.

Q: When did you decide to become a writer?

Joe: I mean, I'm not offended by the term "husky." Now they're called "relaxed fit" jeans. It's the same thing, but there's nothing sexy about being a "relaxed fit jeans" model. Husky sounds like you're owning those extra pounds, making them work for you. Relaxed fit sounds like you eat too much and are just plain lazy.

What was your question again? Ideas? I hunt through James Patterson's garbage, and steal what he tossed. When Patterson throws out ten pages, that's like fifty chapters.

Ha ha ha! Get it? Because his chapters are so short! I swear, the last Patterson book I read had more chapters than page numbers.

Actually, I just watch old Outer Limits episodes and appropriate the plots, like Alan Moore did with Watchmen.

Q: Who do you like to read?

Blake Crouch, Ann Voss Peterson, Jeff Strand, Henry Perez, F. Paul Wilson, Tom Schreck. Pretty much anyone I collaborate with. Because here's a dirty little secret: when you co-write a book with someone, you kind of have to read the stuff they wrote.

My absolute favorite author is Dr. Seuss. In fact, I tried my hand at writing a few Dr. Seuss-style children's books. Here are the titles:

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to sell any of these. I think it may be some sort of rights-issue thing.

Q: What's a work day in the life of Joe Konrath like?

Joe: I wake up early and make some eggs.

Then the smoke alarm goes off, because the eggs are burning because I fell asleep again.

Then I spend ten minutes explaining to the firemen that show up how I'll be more careful next time.

I go back to bed, and the next thing I know, it's around noon. Time for lunch. I want to make an egg sandwich, but I'm out of eggs. And bread. And pretty much everything except some sort of fruit that's been in the refrigerator forever and might be a lime. Or not. It may not even be fruit. So I put it back and think about cooking some pasta but that seems like a lot of work for just lunch, so I go take a nap.

Around three I get up, ready to start my work day, but first I need to eat something. Do pizza places deliver at three? I make a few calls. Nope, no one delivers before five.

I check the fridge. The lime thing is still there, but it looks like it moved from where I saw it last. How odd. Did it move by itself? I'm really hungry, so I decide to give it a try.

It's not a lime, because limes don't have bones.

When I finish eating, I sit down at my computer and write my daily quota, thirty pages.

Q: What's next for Joe Konrath?

Joe: This Spring, Carson's will be releasing my signature scent, called Nocturnal Emission. Available in parfum, eau du toilet, cologne, and roll on. I like the roll on. It tickles my armpits.  My goal is to make enough money to buy Nebraska. Then I'll rename it Joebraska, and invite all of my friends to visit. We're going to have a big party in the state capital, Joemaha. You can come, if you want.

Q: Do you want to talk at all about your books?

Joe: Nope. Not really.

Good if you like horror

Too horrific for me.I didn't like this book at all . Too sex related. Too horrible. If you like that sort of mystery its ok .

Glad this is the last one

I am so disappointed with this book. I loved this series when it started. It was funny, well-written, great plots and the characters were believable. Then it degenerated. Fuzzy Navel was bad, but this was worse. I only wish Konrath had stopped before he wrote these last two, as it just ruined the whole series. Who were these people? They certainly weren't the folks that I had come to know and love from the previous books. They didn't grow, they regressed. Change from growth is not a bad thing, but that wasn't the case here. No humor, just non-stop sex, death and gore. What was the point? Just as well this was the last one. It's just a pity to go out this way.

Not true to the series

I enjoyed Bloody Mary so I thought that I had found a series that would revolve around a female protagonist and an interesting cast of characters, solving murders that would not have too much sex and violence. (Bloody Mary actually mentioned that a lot would happen "off camera.") I have read and enjoyed many other such series (Grafton, Evanovich, etc.) that change the plot but not the tone of the series. Therefore I did not expect to find graphic violence early on in Cherry Bomb. It is as if the characters were hijacked by another author or series. Yuck. I won't be finishing this book and will not attempt to try out the other books in the series because I don't know what to expect, the "fun" of Bloody Mary or the "yuck" of Cherry Bomb.

A decent read, though the mystery was quite easy to figure out. The main character constantly insisting that she is strong and doesn't need anyone gets tiresome as every couple chapters someone is saving her life (including a little child). She comes off as foolish and deluded and quite hard to cheer for.

I am a fan of Jennifer's FREAKS series which is why I tried this book. Wow! What an enjoyable story it is! I won't summarize the story because another reviewer has done an excellent job, but I will tell some of what I liked. Mona who is a witch in a witchy community is a great character. She isn't perfect; she has her flaws and insecurities. However, Mona is great with her nieces, a committed high priestess, and a good sister. Adam,a werewolf who has attended the same Christmas party as Mona for 18 years but has avoided her, discovers she is in danger. He really cares for Mona and tries to help when trouble comes her way. Mona's nieces are cute and add a certain flavor to the story.

The plot had some twists and turns which made the reading fun. Some paranormal books are so over the top I don't care for them. This one was just right!

I am anxiously awaiting book 2!

Hilarious- Especially the footnotes

I basically finished this book in a day. It was great. The plot was fast paced and there weren't any stopping points! As with the rest of the series, the humor really shone through and I found myself laughing out loud for a large portion of it. Especially the footnotes. They were probably the highlight of the entire series (Go Fighting Pupfish!).
I love the characters. In particular, Mack and Golum whose imperfections make both of them insanely lovable.
It was amazing how Michael Grant somehow made such a silly book somehow profound, meaningful, and exciting all at the same time. He must truly be an amazing author.
This was such a nice and... refreshing... story. The ending was amazing. I felt that the conclusion to this series was so nicely well rounded and satisfying. That is a feeling that is always great to have and disappointing to lack.
All in all, this is an amazing book in an amazing series.

Even mama can't put it down!

My (almost) 9 year old son and I have been reading this series together since the first book came out and without fail we finish each book in eager anticipation of the next. On the downside, it's our bedtime story and he NEVER wants to go to bed because he NEVER wants me to stop reading. And I have to admit, there has been more than one occasion on which we've read an extra chapter or two (or three) because mama just couldn't put the book down either. :D Can't wait for the next book!

*On a parental note, my son is definitely on the young side for the series in that it does include issues of boy/girl crush stuff,and attitudes more in line with the adolescent crowd, but nothing a two second conversation here and there can't deal with. That's why we read it together. :)

A really good series to read!

My son has the other 3 books and read those last year. He hasn't read this one yet. He is reading the others again to refresh his memory on what has happened. I got this for his birthday this past May. out of all his presents (which he got some pretty cool presents) he was super excited to get this book since we've been waiting for it to finally come out...The series is a really good! I enjoyed reading them with him.

I originally wanted to write this book to give you a place where

of the experiences I have struggled with on a day-to-day basis
while I was becoming the person I wanted to be. I am not a writer

am a writer that writes because it is a gift that I cannot seem to
keep to myself. They say when something is in God’s plan, you
have no say in how it will unfold; this has been true for me because
of where I am today!
During the final process of writing this book, I gained a different
vision for writing something more than just a manual to life
coaching yourself into success, but also something that could allow
you (my readers) to read in one book, life quotes from others
around the world who are just as successful. I believed that if you
could hear it not only from me, but from others that you look up
too, you could gain the inspiration and motivation you needed to
become successful at whatever it is your heart desires.
Finally, I wrote this book because there is a need to help others
like me who sometimes struggle with getting what they want out of
life. Just because I am successful now does not mean I did not have
life circumstances that hindered my success, too.

A Commitment - Not For Everyone

Gushing reviews are easy to write, (so are pans), but what to say when you know that a book is well written, innovatively and creatively structured, and is destined to be loved by many, but it just didn't appeal to you? "The Luminaries" by Eleanor Catton, is such a book. Short-listed for the Booker Prize, this novel, that weighs in at over 800 pages, takes a bit of a commitment to get into and, once invested, it must "grab" you to continue. I got half-way through and then had to have a "talk with myself" about continuing. It just isn't my kind of novel and continuing was going to take too much of my precious reading time. Yet, I was far enough in to see that its innovative style of folding back in on itself will appeal to many readers. It's like a complicated pastry; the plot is kneaded and folded to produce the confection intended. This is not a novel for readers who like their plots to be linear.

Catton's writing style is beautifully lush and vividly descriptive. Her descriptions of the myriad characters are wonderfully rendered both in the descriptions of their physical selves and of their inner selves. Catton also creates a unique and interesting setting of a New Zealand gold mining town in the mid-nineteenth century.

I'm posting this candidly honest review to help other readers ascertain if they are the type of reader who will enjoy this unique novel, or not.

A brilliant historical novel that could win this year's Booker Prize

This astonishing historical novel opens in Hokitika, New Zealand in 1866, a gold mining town along the West Coast of the South Island. Founded two years previously, Hokitika is in the midst of a population boom, as prospectors, hoteliers and other businessmen have flocked there after news of its vast riches and promise of easy wealth has reached people living within and outside of New Zealand. One of those men is Walter Moody, a young Englishman who is trained in law but seeks gold to provide him with material comfort and the start of a new life. He arrives in town after a harrowing and emotionally distressing voyage at sea, and after he checks in at a local hotel he proceeds to its smoking room, where he hopes to unwind with a pipe and a stiff drink. Upon his arrival he notices that 12 men are already there, who appear to be from different backgrounds but also seem to have gathered in secret for a particular reason. The atmosphere in the room is tense and troubled upon his entry, but in his agitated state Moody doesn't sense that he has disturbed them. He is approached by one of the men, while the others appear to direct their attention toward their conversation, and after slowly gaining their confidence the men begin to share their intertwined stories with Moody, and the reason for their confidential meeting.

The story is centered around several mysterious and apparently interconnected occurrences that took place two weeks previously on a single night, including the death of a hermit in a shack overlooking town, the disappearance of a young man who has struck it rich in a gold mine, and the apparent near suicide of the town's most alluring prostitute. Every man in the room claims to be innocent of any direct involvement, yet they all appear to share some responsibility in the events that led up to these crimes, and each one fears that he may be accused and held accountable.

The reader learns more about these 12 men, Moody, and several other key players, as the story takes on a more defined shape. However, just as it seems to become more clear new twists arise and relationships emerge between previously unconnected characters, which made the tale more compelling and delightfully puzzling. I exclaimed out loud numerous times at various points ("Wait, what?" "Whoa!", etc.), and except for one relatively dead spot near the novel's midway point I was captivated from the first page to the last.

No review could adequately convey the intricacy and complexity of this novel, along with its numerous subplots and themes, and Catton's ability to maintain its momentum through 832 pages was akin to a performer riding a fast moving rollercoaster while juggling various objects of different sizes for hours on end. My biggest critique is its ending, which felt rushed and overly tidy, and despite its length I would have preferred for it to have been extended by another 50-100 pages.

"The Luminaries" is a masterful literary symphony, and a work of historical fiction that compares favorably with similarly superb novels such as The Children's Book, The Stranger's Child and The Glass Room. There are few books of this size that I would love to start reading again immediately after finishing it, but this is one of them, and young Ms Catton is to commended for a brilliant novel that should be a strong contender for this year's Booker Prize.

As if written by a Victorian David Mitchell - Catton strikes gold of her own

Eleanor Catton's "The Luminaries" is set in the New Zealand gold rush of the late 1860s. It's a story about greed, power, gold, dreams, opium, secrets, betrayal and identity, but most of all, it's a celebration of the art of story telling, both in terms of Catton's book and the stories her characters have to tell. It's the kind of book that is perfect escapism and which wraps you up in its world. If you like big, chunky books that you can get lost in for hours, then this is one for you.

Second novels are notoriously tricky, especially when they follow one that has received the critical acclaim that Catton had for her debut, "The Rehearsal". Fortunately, no one seems to have told Catton this and "The Luminaries" is a very different style of book but one that is an even more remarkable and memorable achievement. Also notable is Catton's writing style. This was the standout feature of her debut novel and this is equally stylish but in a very different way. There are hints and nods to some great writers both period and more modern throughout, notably a touch of Charles Dickens, a splash of Wilkie Collins, a smidgeon of Robert Louis Stevenson, a dash of Salman Rushdie and a hint of David Mitchell, yet all combined in a freshness that is uniquely Catton's. It's more homage than a plagiarism of style. The one element that is common to both this and "The Rehearsal" is what comes over as the author's sheer love of story telling - there's a constant sense of fun in her descriptions and she writes as if she has a smile on her face and is as entranced by the story that is being set down as her readers are.

The opening scene accounts for the first 300 pages as the story is introduced from different perspectives, but essentially Walter Moody arrives in the small gold rush town of Hokitika and settles into one of the more basic hotels only to find that he has interrupted a clandestine meeting of twelve very different people who are all in some way linked to the death of a local hermit, the apparent suicide attempt by the local "lady of the old profession" as the judge will later term her and the disappearance of a young, successful and very rich prospector on one eventful night.

The webs of relationships between these twelve men and the victims are complex and at first take a bit of concentration but Catton is alert to this and offers frequent summaries and in particular a rather fuller précis towards the end of this first part to make sure that the reader has picked up on all the salient relationships. The web of intrigue is part of the joy of the book and some you won't fully discover until much later on.

The book then jumps forward a month for a couple of parts before moving back to the past. The past chapters are much, much briefer and this change of style is one that you will either love or hate I suspect. It's one of the more modern touches to what otherwise feels like a very traditional narrative voice.

Although I absolutely loved the book, this was despite two aspects that might prove more of an obstacle for other readers. Firstly, while Catton's descriptions of people's characters are an absolute joy, she is guilty of telling the reader rather than showing. In many ways this is unavoidable with the size of her cast and this is very much an ensemble piece so to show each character trait would be challenging and slow the plot down.

The other aspect that failed to really gel with me is the astrological framework of the book which frames each part. Catton explains that she is more interested in this as a device for exploring character traits rather than any form of belief in determinism, but the device is so subtle that the reader is largely unaware of the relevance. I can see the use of the framework to the writer but I'm less convinced about the need to make this element so explicit, but that's down to my own personal taste.

The quality of the Booker long list seems to have become more erratic in recent years, but "The Luminaries" would not look out of place on the short list of even the vintage years. Definitely recommended. (I still think Harvest will win though).
